clicking from front left - Click HERE for Original Thread
truck11
drove the pilot the other day and noticed a 'clicking' sound coming from the front left area - basically coming from the area between steering column and front fender. happens occasionally when you accelerate hard or turn. Not a huge 'clunk' but more of a click - sounds almost like a rivet is loose and metal on metal is shifting position.

Any thoughts?

my accord used to make a noise similar to the one you're describing. it turned out to be a worn cv boot. i'm not sure if you've got the same problem since your pilot is still fairly new, but that's just my 2cents.

switch posted some info in this thread. I am not sure if this "clicking" sound is same as the OP in below regarding "pop" sound.

I've got the same problem right now. Had it into the shop today and they are going to order a strut at my request. They didnt seem to think it would fix the problem though as they think its on the drivers side of the firewall, most likely around the dash. I hope they are wrong:( Will keep you posted.

Well the strut was replaced and guess what, no fix:( Next step is to remove the dash according to dealer. I guess I'll have to think long and hard about this. On the one hand this noise is going to drive me crazy. On the other by removing the dash other noises may appear. What should one do?

I have my oppointment on Wednesday (oil change) and will have them look at it. Someone said it might be the the contol arms/links / suspension.... not the struts. WHo knows. Either way, it annoys the crap out of me.... issues with my brand new pilot that has not even had it's first oil change yet!!!!!!
skyraider
I feel your pain. Sounds like your issue is the same as mine. I wonder if our pilots were made the same day by the same worker:3: Keep me informed as to what they find.
Check out this thread....

Well I got my Pilot back from the shop today and I am happy to report that the problem is gone. I will quote what the service tech did. "Loosened left side dash mounting bolts and retorqued. Test drove and found no other problems." All this was done without tearing apart the dash.:) I felt like I took delivery on the Pilot again when I drove it off the dealership lot not hearing the infamous popping noise.

Any idea where these are and how hard it is to get to them? My dash rattles to no end on the driver's side. I can press down on the top of the dash where it meets the A pillar (right above the vent) and it quits.
skyraider
No, unfortunantly I dont know where the bolts are located. I should of had the service advisor point them out.

No prob. At least there seems a chance that this could help my problem.

UPDATE.
the service rep called me yesterday and to paraphrase what he said....
___ We hear the noise, but cannot locate it and cannot fix it. We will need the car for a few days and possibly have to start taking the dash apart. We tried a few things, but the noise is still there. You have a long warranty, so if it still bothers you, you have time to get it fixed.

I told him NOT to take the dash apart!! don't need more crap squeeking/rattling!

NICE!

I told him to contact the district rep and see what he/she suggests - he didn't even offer to call Honda techs or anything, I have to suggest it. I doubt he will follow up.

I picked it up with a friend and he drove it home - he claims he didn't hear it. Wife claims she doesn't hear it.
I hear it and the shop manager/Lead guy whatever heard it.

I guess being on this board and 'interested' in the cars, we (members of online forums etc) tend to be a little more 'anal' about our cars. I will have to drive it (it's my wife's car) and see how bad it really is and go from there. less than 6k miles... car should not make noises.

Any other suggestions?
skyraider
Truck11, did you suggest to your dealer that they check the dash mounting bolts? Your problem sounds almost exactly what I was experiencing before they adjusted the mounting bolts. I took my Pilot to Crown Honda in Greensboro and was very impressed with their service. The tech actually talked to Honda tech support before doing anything whereas the dealer closest to me wanted to tear into the dash right away. You may want to call around to other dealers to see what they say. I feel your pain, good luck!

Hi...i took my 07 Pilot in for this exact same thing last week...it took the service guys a couple days to find it but they did find the problem...

to quote from my service paperwork...
"Repaired popping noise from left dash area. Realigned metal on firewall near spot weld behind instrument cluster"

...

i don't know exactly what all that means, but to me it means no more clicking/tapping/popping noise...

hope that helps...
skyraider
Well the popping or ticking noise is back, although not as loud or frequent. 99% of the time there is no noise. I noticed it today while accelerating from standstill on a 20% incline. Also, if I am turning while accelerating hard I faintly hear it. Hopefully one more turn of the dash mounting bolts will fix this, hopefully:(

After driving the Pilot for a few more days with numerous attempts to duplicate the problem I am unable to get it to act up. Maybee it just had to settle one last time. I'm not going to run to the dealer unless its doing it more frequently. I will let everyone know if and when it does start up again, hopefully never!

Well, I got it to act up the other day. It was a cloudy cool day so I'm guessing this had something to do with it. Anyway I took it in to the dealer and to quote what they did....
"Loosened and retorqued steering column bolts. Test drove and found no other problem." Anyhow I drove it around a while trying to get it to act up and was unable to do so. So I guess they got it this time.:) Hopefully I didnt just jinx myself by writing this.

That's weird, I thought the axle was bad too but if it's in the dash, then obviously not. You wouldn't think a loose bolt would cause noises when accelerating and turning.
skyraider
Well I'm not sure if the bolt was too loose or too tight, I'm guessing too tight. At any rate its gone and I'm happy. :)

NOISE is still there!!! Wife claims she can't hear it.... But I do and it drives me nuts. A new vehicle should not be like this..... with leass than 6k miles!
Not due for an oil change yet, but I will visit a different dealership and have them take a look.
Apart from that - still like the Pilot (well, wifee still does)
jhk214
I have been having the same exact problem with my 06 EX-L w/ Nav. I first noticed the it when my pilot had about 6k on it. and i see a lot of other pilots are doing the same thing.

When i brought it in to the dealer they found a rock in the fan area(?) so they took it out. so I thought that might have caused that noise but it came up again.

what should i do? bring it to the dealer and ask them to adjust the bolt?

I would ask them to contact Honda tech support in California as they can tell the service tech right where to go to fix the problem. This is what the techs at Crown Honda in Greensboro did when I took my Pilot in for the same problem.

I have been hearing this noise and my Pilot has only 3,000 miles on it. I first noticed it after driving over a very bumpy road one morning (seems like I jarred something loose) and now it is driving me nuts. Makes me feel like the car is "cheap". The description of it sounding like metal sliding is a good pone. I would describe it as maybe a loose rivet or spot weld where the free movement is very small so you get a "click" each time an excursion is made. The sound is very elusive and hard to reproduce. Almost seems to come at random, but I hear it more while driving slowly on an uneven (not bumpy) road with radio off. I hate bringing the car to the dealer with a problem like this since I feel they will hardly notice it. I am going to take the previous posts and try to find something loose myself...

Thanks all for the input.

So after reading all this, I'm going to throw my experience in as well. I have a popping, knocking sound front right from where the control arms are when driving slowly, starting from a stop, etc, with the wheels turned full lock to the right.

I can always hear it when backing out of the garage or a parking spot. I'm guessing it is related to the LCA, ball joints, tie rods or some other steering component but haven't had time to get under the car to take a look at it. It is definitely not related to the dash.

We have a 2006 Pilot with about 10k miles on it.
truck11
I think what you are talking about is a different noise. the noise we are refering to can only be heard from inside the cab. Slight, just loud enough to notice it and piss you off, but not loud enough for the damn techs to be able to locate it and fix the damn thing! They hear it, just can't fix it!

Yeah, I realized that after re-reading everything. Sorry, didn't mean to whore up your thread. All the best getting things resolved.
truck11
No worries - an annoying sound is an annoying sound! I hope you get yours fixed soon!
