an extended warranty from Honda USA?
From what I understand, if you buy your car cert. from dealer, they would offer you an Honda extended warranty for cert car. However, if you purchase it from a private party, unless the original owner has the extended warranty and will transfer to you. I am not sure how you can purchase a Honda extended warranty by your own.
Wait a sec..
not sure if you can ask one of the local Honda dealers going to inspect your Pilot and sell you the extended warranty. |

Note: Whatever you decide, I believe you have to buy it before the original warranty expires, i.e. 36,000 miles or three years. In fact, depending on when it was first bought, it could be expired already.
I could be wrong, of course -- anyone know for sure?

| Ok, they did a hard sell yesterday at the dealer. The pilot has 32566 miles and it was bought in Aug 04, so I've only got another 3400 miles and then I'd have the option to go with their warranty. Salesman quoted me $1529 for full warranty up to 100K miles. I declined in the showroom, he said contact him before I reach the 36000 miles if I want to go with this. This is not a Honda dealer, the warranty is through some company called Zurich. BTW, Love the pilot, everything I'd hoped for. |

I would never buy a third-party warranty. Contact the site sponsor, hondacuraworld.com, and get a HondaCare quote, or another internet vendor like Saccucci Honda (cheapest last time I checked).

I agree, third party warranties are a bad idea. Usually, third party warranties will limit where you can get repairs (without paying a higher deductible) and getting pre-approval for repairs can be a headache (i.e., get permission before having the car looked at and then get permission before the work is done).
If you are going to bother getting an extended warranty, get Hondacare from Honda. At least you can be sure that you can get any repairs from any Honda service shop. |

Just went to the hondacuraworld site and got confused for a moment regarding the warranties available to the original poster.
It seems that Honda care has changed their plans since I last looked. My pilot is an '04 also with 39.5k miles, similiar to ADV bob's. I bought mine when the plans were changing about a year or so ago. Wound up getting the 84month (7 year)/100,000 mile warranty with $100 deductible at that time. Can't remember the cost though...
The main difference is that my warranty time-frame started from the day I bought the Pilot and either expires at 84 months or 100k miles, whichever comes first. Now it appears that Honda care will even warranty cars from as long ago as 1999, provided their mileage fits the criteria of the plan.
The only plans available for ADVbob have a $100 deductible, and range from (for instance) 36 months or 36000 more miles from NOW for any Honda 1999 or newer with up to 40,000 miles on the odo (now) costs $900.
A better but more expensive plan is the 60 month/60,000 mile plan for any 2004 Honda and newer with up to 40k on the odo costs $1300. Does that mean ADVbob could buy the warranty at 39,999 miles and get 5 more years or 60k more miles from that day he buys? He would seemingly get approximately a total of +/- 90month/100k warranty for $1300.
Just for the record, I bought mine 'cause I tow a boat down in deep south hot-as-hell Texas a lot during the summer. A long 140mile round trip to the closest lake and the temps WILL be close to 100 degrees when I do the towing. No transmission problems yet, and this will be my 3rd summer to use my Pilot like a work-horse. You can really tell you have a boat back there when pulling it to the lake. |

No, you don't need to purchase an extended warranty. They are like insurance; if you want to have the extra comfort of having your Pilot covered for four, five years or more, it is a decent investment. Off the showroom floor you get the 3/36,000 (as I recall) including roadside assistance. Keep in mind that these warranties ususally do not provide bumper-to-bumper coverage past the factory warranty.
When I bought my '05 Pilot, I ponied up for a five year maitenance/warranty; two additional years over the factory warranty. I just picked up an '07 Ridgeline a few weeks ago and took the five year maintenance/warranty. I was comfortable with the price and liked the roadside assistance thing and knowing that all of my routine maintenance was pre-paid (except tires, battery, wipers, etc.). Read everything carefully and don't let a finance manager railroad you into something you are not comfortable with. |

The problem is that once you're out of factory warranty, you're not eligible for a HondaCare..... |

You're the expert, but I still don't understand then the ability to purchase a 60/60 with any honda 2004 with under 40k miles. Maybe that means if it is still under the original 36month timeframe but out of the mileage part of the original warranty?
Please tell me what I'm missing. |

There's one odd circumstance that would allow this.....if the vehicle you were purchasing was a Honda Certified Pre-Owned, and you bought it from the selling dealer at the time of purchase.....
My webmaster doesn't know the ins and outs of the HondaCare as well as I do, and I haven't been able to corner him long enough to do some updating in that realm, so I put the disclaimer at the top of the section saying that any vehicle in warranty is eligible for a policy...... |
