Car Seat positions????? - Click HERE for Original Thread

My wife and I just had our first baby... The problem is that we want to put our "latch" style car seat in the middle of the second row, but there are no latches on the frame for the middle. The latches are only on the outside seats. Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow safely put this carseat in the middle without getting the kind that straps to the hooks on the back of the seat? Any tips would help. Thanks!

You are right that a LATCH seat is not intended to go in the middle. Some people have said they have attached one with flexible guides there, using one side of each of the outside attachment points (but this is not as intended and unsure if it is safe).

You can always attach a seat in the middle with just the seat belt. If you install it correctly, it should prove safe. The problem is many people do not do it correctly and the LATCH seat is intended to make it easier and more "foolproof" so safer.

If in doubt, the local fire dept. usually gives tips and lessons. Don't laugh, kids deserve the best.

We have our car seat set up in the middle of the second row, secured by both the LATCH and the seatbelt, although an expert who posted here says that is the wrong way to do it. You can search the archives for that thread.

The center position has a tether attachment point, but no "lower anchor" points, so you must use the center seat shoulder belt to securely install a baby seat or booster seat.

Although the lower anchor points are intended for the outboard seats, I have been using the inside "lower anchor" points from the left and right positions in addition to the shoulder belt and tether. I just had to get car seats that have a strap type connector for the lower anchors. The seats that use straight clamps won't work.
