Yes, keys will go away.
In the long term, so will push button ignitions. |

Our S2000 had a "Start" button along with a key - whereas our Camry Hybrid did not even have a key. We REALLY liked the setup. Our "ahem" next car will also have a keyless setup. :D |

I agree with EaglePilot. It's added complexity for gimmickry's sake. It'll pass.
I read an interesting story in one of the car magazines a couple of months ago (as an aside, every auto writer I've read hates the start button too). In the (supposedly true) story, a man was running late getting home and as he arrived, his wife was waiting for him in the driveway to use the car so he left it running as he got out and she got in. She drove for two hours and parked the car, only to realize when she returned to it that she didn't have the keys - they were still in her husband's pocket at home. Kind of an unusual scenario, but it just emphasizes the common sense of needing the keys to run the car. What's so hard about that? |

I have the setup on my Camry Hybrid, and really really like it. I love the convenience, and, as a left-hander with limited right-hand motor skills, I like that I can just push the start button with my right thumb.
In most other cars, the ignition was in an awkward spot or hard to turn, so I found myself snaking my left arm around the wheel to start the car. No more!:D |

Using the past tense, and a changed sig line. When did you sell the Camry and S2000, and when's the Bimmer arriving?:p |

How the hell did she turn it off after parking it with no keys? |

Hmmm, who said anything about a Bimmer (I hate that name, BTW)??
:D
But alas, we have traded in both the S and the Camry for a new......
yes, BMW.
3 series "Vert".
It's "on the boat" and we should take delivery about the middle of May.
It should look just like this: |

I have it in a lexus.
Plus side
-Never have to reach for the keys.. More of a plus for the gender that carries purses.
-It will not allow me to lock the key(fob) in the car. If you try to lock it... it just sits there and beeps at ya... Also the trunk will not lock while the key is in it :)
Negative side for me- I can get remote start for around 1K vs a normal $200.00
Remote starters require a key or bypass module tucked up under the dash... There currently is no module for the lexus, and you can use a key ($280.00) from the dealer ... then most alarm companies will not do the install as it hacks the heck out of the OEM systems. It can be done, but few wanna try as others have messed up peoples cars
my guess is that soon it will be cheaper as it becomes common |

On the Camry if you try to lock it via the "touch" button on the door, it will not let you if there is a fob IN the car. You can though lock the doors using a SECOND fob, even if there is one in the car. |

A one-word easy solution to your problem . . . Porsche! ;) |

The thing I object to mostly about keys, is having to carry them in my pocket. Shards of metal that have changed little for centuries, necessary to access, operate or enter most things in my dominion. If I have to carry a set of keys, what's one more? I know the technology is there to eliminate them from my life entirely, but most of the solutions are expensive and not that great. Do I really want to put cypher locks on my house?
Then there are the guys who have key rings hanging from a belt loop with about a hundred keys (along with 2 phones and 3 pagers) just so the world knows how important they are. |

Last time I got deep into this topic was 1998 and 1999.
We were trying to understand where the market was going and how telematics would impact it. |
