Exactly right. The pilot is Sage Brush Pearl and the Accord is Graphite Pearl. My Accord has a lot less green in it then the wifes Pilot. She is not the biggest fan of her color (she wanted black, oh well). |

| Wish I could wash mine. We have been under watering restrictions for months and most of the state is in extreme drought conditions. Depending upon which county you are in, some can use the car wash on certain days, others allow the car wash only if it uses well water. Since the car wash doesn't do much good I just wait for the drought to end. |

Hand washing isn't good anyway. I've handwashed my Camry once in a year, and use a touchless car wash about once a month. The car looks like new and feels freshly waxed, with no work on my part other than a credit card swipe. :D I believe the study below is right!

A touchless carwash is absolutely useless around here. Even the area of the windshield that the wipers do not get to remain dirty.
As for that study, if you wax your car at proper intervals, you'll be fine. I had a 2001 Accord that I hand washed for 6.5 years. When I was going to sell it, I spent $120 on a detail, which included waxing, and the paint job look impressive. |

The newer generation of automatic washes are very good at getting the car decently clean, especially here in the salt-belt of NH. If you get the "expensive" wash with the undercarriage, you get enough soap-soak, and enough pressure and vibration rinsing that gets 95% of the dirt off and leaves the finish in great shape. Earlier variants (say 5 years ago) just didn't have the technology down to really clean the car - you'd have this layer of dirt still around. But the newer ones do a much better job.
Part of the problem with home washing jobs is the residual dirt on the brush you may use (which is a problem even with the cloth automatic washes). I used to use the old bucket with soap method, but after looking at the silt and crud that was in the bottom of the bucket, I figured some of that was attaching to the brush or hand mitt each time it went into the bucket. I then switched over to the Mr Clean Auto-Dry system, which was better in that you had no bucket, but you have to be pretty agressive about rinsing the brush (or mitt) between sections since you don't really loosen up the attached dirt that much.
Overall, over the past few years, I've found that an auto car wash and then something like a "Wet Paint" treatment to get rid of any film that might be there, is about as good as you can go - at least up here where the elements are against you most of the year!

The carwash I use is only 18 months old, and I get the full treatment every time for $10. Undercarriage wash, double soak, high pressure wash, clear coat polish, spot-free rinse, and air dry. I truly am amazed that the car's paint is in much better shape than any vehicle I'd treated with kid gloves, washing every week, clay bar and wax every 6 months, etc.

It's here in Manassas, at the intersection of Ashton Avenue and Godwin Drive. It's one of those self-wash places with several bays, and the last bay is an automatic touchless wash. |

Sounds like the ones around here - $10 is the going rate for all of the intersting smelling soaps and polishes. :D Does a great job! |

In all my years of washing cars, there isn't anything that's really foolproof if you don't take the time to really rinse the dirt off. Wool Mitt. Big sponge. Soft brush on a stick. Soft brush on the end of a pole with water coming out. All have a certain level of abrasion if you don't rinse the dirt off. With all of the salt around here, I've not found a foolproof way to wash the car in the winter, and the new touchless automated ones are a godsend. During the summer, if there's not a lot of roadgrime on the car, I'll use my soft brush and rinse it pretty well and it doesn't do much to the surface.
Back in the early 70's when I first started washing cars, there was virtually nothing around to buy to wash other than some ivory dishsoap and a sponge that you'd use in the kitchen. :eek: And the only automated car washes were the kids with big spinning brushes. :eek: :eek: :eek:

So I've lived in the D.C. area too long. But I never took money from lobbyists. :p I'm still happy that my car looks (and the finish feels) nicer with a whole lot less work on my part. :1: |

| Still can't wash the Pilot. No yard watering, no nothing! Raleigh mayor about to limit people to 25 gallons of water per person per day and put a 50% surcharge on water. Housing construction is on hold. So far the Klasse wax and sealant is holding up. Have a friend who may drive out of the area (Virginia) wash and wax his. Hope he doesn't try to go south, Georgia is in bad shape too. |
