colorider's signature line has changed again, with no mention of the BMW, and his avatar has changed (see below).

When do we get the rest of the story? :p
robrecht
Hmmm ... Mazda. I hope it's an RX-8!!! :roadtrip: But the new DI all-aluminum larger rotary won't be out for a year or two probably. :8:

You're good, Jay, but I'm surprised you didn't trot out your signature smiley:

I noticed that too!

BTW....'08 models are out now, Jay. What are you doing still holding onto an '07? That Camry must look like a dinosaur now, huh? :D Isn't it time, or do we have to actually be in the '08 calendar year before you get the "itch" :7:

For all we know, Jay may have already pulled the trigger on something already!

jay - you are GOOD!!! :8:

robrecht, the problem with the RX-8 (and I do LIKE the looks of them) is that it does not come in a convertible.

We just decided that we had too much $$$ sitting in the garage and not being driven. The BMW is a VERY nice vehicle - the nicest I have ever owned (and probably ever will own).

Thought about another S2K as they are great vehicles. Strong rumors that the '08 will be the last year and it would have been nice to own one for that reason alone.

Since we wanted another roadster, it really only left one other choice that I would even consider: The Miata. About $5K less money and a LOT of bang for the buck, IMHO.

Went for the Grand Touring model with "PRHT" (Power Retractable Hard Top) in the "Stormy Blue Mica" color (black interior).

I just picked it up last night and will try to get some pictures taken and posted today.

Very nice choice! I first thought Miata, but remembered the S2k, and didn't think a beamer owner owner would be capable of such good judgement. :roadtrip:

Nice car Colorider!

We are doing our 2nd annual Miatas at Myrtle Beach in March 08. We had about 250 cars last year. Too bad it would be such a long drive for you. Hope to see you over at Miata.net.

You simply cannot beat the Miata as far as bang for your buck.

The PRHT is the nicest of them all.

Congrats!

Yep, I've come very close a couple of times, but I just don't need another car since my 15+year-old Miata is still going strong. Of course it's not quite as exciting as your Corolla ... :roadtrip:

Well, well. Zoom, Zoom. Nice little car, but.........................when I retire....and it's not so far away. I want something to really raise my testosterone to where it was when I was a teenager......something with real balls and a fire breathing V8 and affordable.............Corvette!!!!!

Colorider, you are such a consumer!

No wonder the ST1300 had to go!

Congrats on the new ride, eventhough it is 4 wheel version.

So what's the "new" 2 wheeler. I know by spring you will submit to your endless new ride itch.

Beautiful colour too!

Hey give us some feedback on the PHRT. I looked at the Pontiac with it and it killed all trunk room except a briefcase. I know the Miata doesn't have a wealth of room but give us the pros and cons of the difference roofs now that you have it.

After my wfie gets her PhD I want to supplement the Pilot with what I have always wanted, a manual shift convertable sports car. Short list is a Porsche Boxster, Mazda Miata, and maybe Honda 2000. Wish Honda still made the Del Sol Civic. (Then again I wish they still made the Accord wagon, must be stuck in the past.)

I like the idea of the hard top during the winter but think would prefer the cloth top the rest of the year. Don't know.

Thanks!!! I would love to attend a large Miata gathering. March may not be the best month to drive across unless the weather was very mild.

I'm registered over on Miata.net, but have not posted for a long (since I did not own one). I'm sure I will posting more soon. I'm "Rodster" over there.

We looked at and drove the new Vet. Awesome, to say the least.......
But, just as we had so much tied up in the BMW, the Vet would have been even worse.

That said, never say never.

The ST1300 had to go to pay for my DL650 and to put some (needed) money back into the bank. Being retired is not cheap!!! :2:

For now, the DL1000 and the DL650 are sharing my motorcycle garage, but I feel by sometime this spring/summer, the DL650 may win out over the DL1000. Then again.......................

The Miata PRHT (Power Retractable Hard Top) is very well designed with respect to space. It folds into the same space that the soft top does so it takes up no trunk space whatsoever. It only adds about 75 lbs of additional weight--Miata enthusiasts are very weight conscious, BTW-- so the suspension on the hardtop model is beefed up a little bit to handle the extra weight.

SportyMonk, I feel for you, man, still pining after that '57 XK-140 of your youth. :roadtrip:

Thanks for the response. Hhhmm, weight conscious. Guess I better start trimming down now. Been needing to lose a few.

Not to high jack this but what I have really pined for is a 1965-67 Shelby Cobra. Trouble is my daughter now has graduated and has a good job is talks about getting me one. I had to tell her (A) parts, insurance etc would be a nightmare, (B) it is is an old car no matter what; and most importantly (C) everybody needs a dream to pursue, not necessarily catch. I would rather have my dreams than actually get one and have the reality of it hit home. I told her let me keep my dreams. Thus the Miata is what I really want for 200?. Back to Coloriders Miata.

robrecht covered it very good. Somewhere between 75-80 pounds added weight and a few other changes like the little bump behind the top and a steel trunk lid versus aluminum. The soft top Miata has two moderate size storage compartments behind the seats that are not available with the PRHT, but the actual trunk is exactly the same. It's spec'd at 5.3 cubic feet which is supposedly larger than the S2K, but I'm not sure the Miata will hold as much luggage. We traveled for 2 full weeks to Canada last year and were able to get everything in the trunk, including two carry-on size bags. These same bags will NOT fit in the Miata trunk (about 1" too high).

Good Luck!

:)

A friend of mine in Boston area has the '91 limited edition that came in British Racing Green with the tan leather interior--I love this classic vibe. Met a nice old guy the other day with a Highland Green PRHT--it was pretty nice but not quite a classic. It's a different green than the earlier Nordic Green. The Pilot came in a dark green for 1 or 2 years, but it also didn't quite have that vintage roadster magic.

I rode my V on my Alaska trip in July and loved it. In the meantime, every Wee owner I talked to REALLY love the Wee. So............ I bought a Wee as well a few months ago and so far it seems to have a better "smiles per mile" ratio. I'm currently adding Caribou luggage to it so I will be ready for some trips next year. Then it will be "decision time"!!

Does colorider's sister-in-law count?

I was going to give an honorable mention to airgate as a Site Moderator for www.s2ki.com, but they've gotten rid of their Pilot.

You can see some older pics & specs of my Miata in the "Custom Ferrari" link in my signautre, but I must confess that it's not really a Ferrari, though it does have an egg-crate grille on it, not to mention the Cobra shift ring!

Thanks for the response but I have bad news, my wife says I can't go out and play with Colorider as he is a bad influence on me. Every time he is around I keep saying bad words like "honey, I sure would like a motorcycle. or honey, I bought the Pilot instead of the Miata, I want the Miata." :p

Colorider and all, would/did you get the run flat tires or the regular tires with the fix stuff? Know a Miata has no spare tire but after what I read about the problems getting a run flat for the Odyssey, not sure I want the same situation on a Miata. Read on Miata.net that some are carrying a RX-8 donut.

Sportymonk, you must break free from the forces of overdomestication and live up to the promise of your screenname. As for spare tires, I haven't bothered with one for many years, nor would I want run-flats. If I ever have a tire emergency, I'll just walk barefoot through the snow ... or maybe call my wife. :7:

Me a bad influence? NEVER happen!!! :D

My BMW had runflats and I hated the harsh ride. IF I had kept it long enough, I would have put non-runflats on it. I always carry a plug kit and a small compressor with me anyway.

The newer Miata's do not have a spare. Just an "inflation kit" which is a bottle of slime and a small compressor. Run-flats are an optional tire (I do not have them - see above).

Curious, I went to Edmunds Miata section and a lot of people there are saying that a PRHT takes about 4-6 months to get in unless you get very lucky. The GT in particular seems hard to find. It appears the dealers can only order once every 3 months and even then they have allotments as to how much can be customer ordered.

How is the fit and finish, especially in light of the Ford connection to Mazda.

Colorider is bad news if you intend to keep what you have. Because of HIM, I have added to the Pilot's many available accessories (okay because of this site too, of which he is a Moderator) and he connected me to the seller of the Honda ST1100 that I now own. I bought a GPS for the bike which he recommended, which is the same model (he left his out to get wrecked in the rain, so he can get another one).

I just don't say his name out loud, but my wife always yells out get off those forums. Of which Colorider is on both!

The various Edmunds forums are not known for having accurate info.. That said, I'm sure that it does vary a lot by area and time of year. Right now I know there are probably about a half dozen PRHT's in Colorado.

The fit and finish seems on par with any other Japanese car - at least to any that I have owned. Maybe Ford's 30% is only in the "other" models!!! :D

Thanks!!! I have always thought of the Miata as more of a roadster than a sports-car. IMHO, the S2K is a better sports-car (of course I could change my mind after owning my Miata a little longer). :)

In any case, a LOT of bang for the buck with the Miata!!!

the miata is easier to live with than the s2k. it's a bit more neutral and forgiving. i believe it is a *little* roomier inside than the S2k.

on the track, the s2k i sampled was very nice, very serious, but the car had a tendency to step out. this was a mildly upgraded car. gathering it back up was easy, but it gave little notice that it was going to misbehave.

the miata has always felt more tossable to me. it has always excelled in mechanical grip and balance.

for less than 5k in upgrades , my '92 outperforms the s2k. turbo, suspension, bracing. i have taken the car upto 242rwhp on the stock 1.6 motor. it has never disappointed me. my wife has no problems driving around in it, she definitely isn't afraid of it. i'm crazy enough to drive on race tires daily to make my commute more 'exciting'. :2:

In my short history (less than 2000 miles) driving a Miata, I would have to agree that it is more neutral and forgiving. A couple days ago we took a 125 mile ride up into the mountains and managed a few twisties. Very pleased. "Tossable" is a good term! :)

I'm thinking it is going to provide a lot of "smiles per mile"!!

ncelk
There are certainly faster cars, but there are few that offer as much entertainment for the price.

I can have as much fun in the twisties as anyone else, and get good gas mileage to boot.

The s2k is faster, but I can drive the Miata harder without endangering myself.
