255/70 on stock rims? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've been through all the threads dealing with wheels and tire sizes, but I haven't seen anyone who has put 255/70's on their stock rims.

I'd rather replace my Integrities with 255/65 Michelins, but according to the tire specs if I go to 65 (or less) sidewalls, the stock rims (6.5") are too small, so I'd have to upgrade the wheels to 7" or wider. (I don't understand why 70's will fit but 65's will not, but that's beside the point.)

Anyway, I can't afford new rims, so the only way I can get more rubber on the road and give my Pilot a beefier footprint using the stock rims is to go to a 255/70.

Anyone see any problems with Michelin 255/70's on the stock 6.5" rims?

Hello

I had 245/70's, Michelin Cross Terrains and they did not ride well

I wanted more rubber on the road for the same reason as you, but it was a mistake.

I guess the car is made to use the std 235/70s

I would reccomend putting 17" rims on, then using a 65 series

How about 255-65-16 on stock rims? I know the requirement is 7-in rim for that size. I remember someone in the forum say it maybe ok. 255-65-16 is actually the same diameter as the original GY.

I cant see a problem with that size on 6.5's. I'm running 285/75-16's on 16x7 rims with no problems at all.

Good point!!

I'm not a tire expert, but I'm pretty sure that 70, 75, even 80 series tires are more suited for larger widths on somewhat skinny 6.5" wheels. The problem occurs when you take a lower sidewall height like 65 or 60 series and try to 'bend' the rubber inward to fit the wheel. Tires aren't happy campers when they're forced onto too small a wheel.
