Confused about full size spare for 2008 EX-L Pilot - Click HERE for Original Thread

I looking to install a full size spare in my 2008 EX-L Pilot by next summer.

Handa Accessories shows a stock EX 16" alloy and LX 16" steel wheel. The site says:

  • the EX 16" alloy is not for 2005 models, and only fits 2003-2004 models.
  • the LX 16" steel wheel is usable on 2005 as a full size spare.

Why is the LX 16" steel wheel usable on 2005 models, but the EX 16" alloy is not?

Can the LX 16" steel wheel be used on 2008 models as a full size spare?

What were the changes in wheel pattern/design between 2003 to 2008 ?

Would there be any problem mounting an alloy wheel in the spare tire bay?

(I presume folks prefer the steel wheel over the alloy as a spare only because it's cheaper.)

Which previous model year wheels are compatible with the 2008 EX-L model?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The bolt pattern is the same for all years and models. The difference b/w the wheels is that for 2003-2004, you can't mount TPMS sensors on them(no TPMS sensors for these years), but if only using as a spare, it doesn't matter.

You can mount an alloy in the spare tire bay, but why not just get a steelie? Or you can keep an eye on the board as there are members who sell OEM alloy wheels once they get aftermarket ones.

I bought a full size OEM alloy spare on my 2004 for my upcoming cross country trip. Got it from a board member here. Timing is everything. Just subscribe to the tire and wheel threads.

I think '05 and before, the wheel was steel.

It's Alloy starting in '06 for the LX.

I think Tim has a some good deals on steel rim (that's hondacuraworld.com, the site sponsor).

I have the LX alloy plus a spare that I picked up for it.

Check with your local dealers too - they may have some tire/wheel combos left over when they put overpriced aftermarket wheels/tires on Pilots.

Thanks for all the replies.

Do any of you take the trouble to use the donut spare for around town and switch in the full size for out of town use?

Do you notice a difference in the fuel economy around town between carrying the full size vs donut?

I spent some more time searching the board and turned up the following interesting threads:

  • EX/LX stock wheel spec - March 2004 post also talks about using Accord 16" steel wheel as a spare. Tire rim specification is:
    quote:

    HONDA MOTOR CO LTD, TOPY-J-DOT, 16x6 1/2 JJ45, S9V-665A, 8D14x17

Bolt pattern 5 X 114.3 mm offset +45 mm. See wheel sizing article for more information.

  • Single Pilot steel wheel - October 2006 post talks about using Element steel wheel, GM wheel (same size, bolt pattern, offset and hub size) as a spare
  • 2005 wheels - April 2007 post confirms the difference between pre-2005 and later is TPMS.
  • Can you adapt an 03 tire to fit an 05? - May 2005 thread with similar results.

Some sites I found selling new Honda steel rims:

Switching between the 2 would be a pain in the @$$. The weight difference, I feel, is also negligible to notice any MPG difference.

The donut is really garbage so I don't even use it at all.

At best, I use it for rotating tires around.

Here are my 2005 and 2006 rims side-by-side for comparison.

The first picture shows the 2006 rim on the left and the 2005 rim on the right.

The next picture shows the rear of the 2006 rim ("Made in Canada").

The next picture shows the rear of the 2005 rim.

Both are marked 16 6.5 JJ 45 and TPMS.

I picked up an extra 06 alloy EX wheel+TPMS cheap that somebody had leftover (in this forum). I got a tire of the type I wanted for my next set and put it on this extra rim.

That way when I DO buy new tires, I'll only buy 3, rotate in the spare, and then take the best leftover and use as my spare.

Ahh ... thanks for the tip!

I was considering buying a single tire from craigslist to use as a spare. I think sets of four command a better price so there's a good chance I'd be able to get a deal on a single one.
