About a month ago, I replaced my worn Goodyear TTs with a set of Continental CrossContact LXs. I was looking for something more civilized than the TTs, despite the outstanding performance of the TTs. Over time, the TTs had become increasingly harsh and noisy, and on rough roads would drown out the radio. At the suggestion of a local dealer, who offered a 30 day trial, I bought the LXs. Here's what I think after a month:
Noise/Harshness: Well, to say there was an improvement would be the understatement of the decade. It's a different vehicle with the LXs. Road noise is much lower, and the tires are more supple over sharp bumps like imperfections in the road. I'm not sure if the TTs had just gotten that bad, or if these tires are that much better, but the difference was amazing.
Dry traction: No problems here. The LXs hold the road nicely.
Wet/Rain: Again, I'd rate these tires very good/excellent in wet conditions, but they're brand new with plenty of tread depth to shed water. No problems here, either.
Snow: I was looking for a tire that was adequate in snow, but got something better. If you rate the TTs excellent in snow, the LXs would rate very good. I just returned from a weekend ski trip to Vermont, and drove through some nasty conditions with no problems at all. They are better than I'd thought.
Handling: The "twitchy" nature of the TTs became somewhat annoying, especially on the highway. The LXs track straighter, and are more predictable tires in all conditions.
Bottom line, so far, after a few weeks, I love them. However, we'll see as they wear since tires tend to change personality as they age.
One last note, I had to buy the "high speed" version of this tire in order to get blackwalls. Hate those raised white letters. Not sure how much difference there is between the T and H versions. Hopefully, not much. |
