Would anyone be interested in a custom dual exhaust for their Pilot?
THe function of this is to make it easier for the Pilot to Breathe, so to speak, and it is for looks. WE are not going to say that it gives a huge amount of horsepower but you might get 10-12 max gain of HP, with headers all the way back.
If we can get enough people interested in this, we can get a dyno done of the Pilot with the stock exhaust and then one again after the piece is installed. |

Roro's looks awesome!! I can't waitg to see ours done
They don't make them for the Pilot at all anywhere but my husband can fabricate one for the Pilots. He is doing one for our Pilot with custom Headers as well, along with a custom CAI. He was interested to see how many Pilot owners would be interested in this custom exhaust and then once pics are posted of the CAI (in process of fabricating now) that as well. |

Actually, the dual exhaust was my idea and he liked it too. :p
We will be taking pics when we are done, the price I will have to get back to you on since we have just got done rebuilding the Engine and Transmission on the Pilot and getting it back together now finally after like 2 months of it being down.
We were gauging interest since there is no love for the pilot. |

There's a lot of love for the Pilot - because it does what it does well, without any mods.
At least we're consistent. There's been very little interest in any type of modifications, other than wheels and tires or the usual cargo accessory additions.:p |

My father would have that same comment :p :D
There is no love, as in aftermarket. I'm a youngin (30) and and I can't stand the tails and headlights that come with them. I have the clear taillights and I am getting retrofit headlights for the Pilot. The retros have beeter lighting which is good for any driver who may have a hard time seeing at night like myself. I have also have rebuilt the engine and tranny and dressed up the engine bay a little bit with powder coating. Just because the pilot has love in the form of doing what it's supposed doesn't mean they can't look "pimp" with a "thumpin" sound system which mine has. :2: |

I'm interested but as in all Hondas, we are speed density. That will ultimately stop the gains your are searching for.
I think a nice catback system with a little nicer tone, better flow and a tip that compliments the Pilot would be great! On the other hand, while under the Pilot this summer I couldn't help but notice a nasty crimp and bend for the factory header <-- there has to be HP there.
Anyways, you can see I am on both sides of the fence! Good luck and keep us updated!
P.S. With the V6 being as popular as it is, what are the chances that an existing aftermarket header setup would work? |

My husband is designing the headers himself as well. WE are going to be the "guinea pigs" for this. I will definately get pics of before and after. Right now we are trying to get the pilot back together from a rebuild so we can start to fabricate these items and get them posted. From what we can tell no one makes an aftermarket one, we tried the TL ones but they hit the rear cross shaft and differential houseing to the rear.
Where the bend in the factory header there is HP there. We can't totally get rid of that crimp since it is there for a reason, that reason is to keep the pipe coming from both heads the same length, if they were different lengths the mismatched exhaust gases from each cylinder would collide in the pipe creating turbulance instead of a smooth flow. |

2.5" to the Y for the split to the mufflers then 2" to the mufflers. |

I don't know where he got it from but I know that my husband and I are going to be custom making one for our Pilot here in another month or so. We are just waiting to get the funds to get the materials to make it since we just rebuilt the transmission and engine and got it back up and running. Would be glad to let you know when we get ours done and pics to go with it along with the cost for us to do it if you are really interested.

Long story short....
I am originally from Ohio and my current husband lived in VIrginia. So, for a year between the 2 of us, we drove from either VIrignia to Ohio and me from Ohio to Virginia every weekend. WE have 112K on it. There was a couple bearings al9ong with a gear that went in the transmission. We were planning on rebuilding the engine anyways but was not planning on doing it until later this year. WE had to drop the whole k-frame out to rebuild the transimission so we figured we would just do both at the same time instead of dropping the k-frame twice to rebuild them at different times. we also saved ourselves a lot of money by doing it ourselves.
I do have pics, not documented well n the build but do have them of the work we did on the pilot. I will get pics posted later tonight. |

Well when we get ours done, sometime between now and the end of April (funding issues) I will let you know. Also in the gallery under mine are pics of my pilot as of now but will be posting updates here soon. WE just redid the engine and transmission and made a custom CAI for it and need to get the pics posted for all to look at. When I do I will put a link in this post.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to complete this until like the end of April. WE have to wait for funds to come in to start ordering the parts since we will be making custom headers as well. WE have 2 small children and normal family financial obligations to meet. |

No worries, I'm still in the debating phase at this point. I seen a guy that put NOS in his pilot but that is too crazy for me. I like the pilot at the beginning of this thread but I would like to hear what it sounds like too. I'm looking for small changes in appearance but want to at least still have a factory warranty :D Would you think about putting a kit together after this is all said and done or would your build be a one time thing? |

The exhaust on the 2009 pilot is the only thing I like on the out side of the pilot but I think that the custom set up would come out cheaper than the stock exhaust from the 2009 and still be able to get exhaust tips that look like it. |

Re: Subject Custom Exhaust
I don't think I can go with the custom exhaust here in california with our emission laws and inspections, plus I think it would void the emission system warranty. Thats why I was thinking about the MDX or Hondas stock dual exhaust systems, From the back of the catalytic converter back. So it would look more like a aftermarket factory installed accessory
Re: Subject 2009 Honda Pilot
Yes theres several features that I like on the new Pilot
First it has dual exhaust
Second the tail gate window that opens
Third the third row seat redesign with more room
Forth redesign more room in the rear space
The things a don’t like is the bigger rear side window pillar
And the ugly front grille plus on the inside is that
Ugly design dashboard with gear shifter on it |

I'm not sure but I think you would void the emissions warranty if you swap the exhaust in general, even if it came off another Honda product.
All those are good improvements indeed. I was debating about getting it until I found out that it looked like a Nissan Pathfinder with a Honda Logo. I guess that it's going to be one of those things that you either love or hate. |

As if there aren't 436,756 other reasons not to live in Cali... CARB is bullcrap.... and that 91 octane mexican urine that you west coasters call fuel too. Bring that custom exhaust here... No government agency can stop ME from installing it. (yet) |

I've never failed a smog check with any exhaust system. As long as you don't change the location of the cat and the exhaust stream is clean that's all that matters.
There are some noise ordinances, but the smog guys don't care about that.
I have Borla exhaust on our IS300, Flowmaster on our civic, ractive on our CRX and magnaflows on the 300zx and they've all passed, even smog only stations.
Mufflers have nothing to do with emissions. As far as voiding the exhaust system warrenty, I don't see how changing the muffler would have any effect on the rest of the system. |

No issue here if a stay with stock mufflers

Hello mchan
Thanks for the information, that was my thoughts too with all the issues.
"recap”
That’s why I want a cat back system, So I don't mess with any of that emission parts up front and about the noise ordinances I'm going to stay with stock mufflers plus pipes for the warranty and emission issues too. With all stock parts added to the system it’s going to look like an original Honda aftermarket bolt on system and not a DIY modification project.
Just my opinion is that the dual exhaust system from the MDX or the new Pilot might be the easier way to go for what I want, but may not be the cheapest way. |

Why pay more for some stock dual that may not fit? Just have a muffler shop build one for you. You can probably get one built for $300-$500? Have them unbolt the original in case you decide to switch back.
As long as you don't touch anything in front of the Cat converter you should be fine as far a smog.
If you want quiet, and just want the look use quieter or stock rated mufflers.
If you go the performance route, get stainless. I went through 2 regular flowmasters, and an aluminized on my integra (not all at the same time!) and they rotted out fairly quickly. Flowmaster was gracious enough to replace it with a stainless one and it was fine after that. Stainless flowmaster looks kind of ugly though. You see all the internal welds on the outside in the form of discoloration.
If I did it, I would wait until my warranty was up. Maybe by then they will have CARB approved headers. I would keep the old exhaust (if I sold or traded it). Have them fabricate with the least sharp bends possible (mandrel bending will cost way too much). And use magnaflows or some of the larger stainless flowmaster deltas(love the sound of the flowmasters).
I used to be all hating on CARB too, but I grew up and got old (thought about other people and the future). CARB is a good thing. Do you want to be able to breathe? Don't hate, appreciate! |

Exactly, but for those who know how to fab it themselves, like us, can actually do it for relatively cheap but at the same time. We have to make it work around the rear diff. WE have it figured out we just need to get the funds together to buy the magnaflow mufflers and the piping in a kit to actually weld it together and make it. Same with the headers. My husband knows how the sniff test works, etc since he used to be an inspection guy at a place in PA before. |

Have you ever looked into STS Turbo since you are fabricating an exhaust system from scratch? Obviously they don't have a kit for a Pilot, but they have a universal setup. |

because I am not turbing the Pilot. IF I was going to do that route of any kind it would be a supercharger. This is still considered a family vehicle with more custom looks that I want than anything |

| I’m concern about the spare tire being offset to the left for the one stock muffler on the right side and not having enough room on the left side for a second muffler to fit, by having upgraded to a full side spare tire plus added on a trailer hutch might be a problem on my 06 model but I’m considering being it’s a two wheel drive model that I might have a little bit more to route the two tail pipes thru to back and maybe doing away with the stock rear muffler and moving it to the front of the sub frame, any suggestions. |
