I held off buying either one when I bought my new plasma TV (which I hope was the right decision).

Nah, more ports better. No receiver needed. for DVD and computer use. |

Although I didn't purchase the 'winning' platform, I am still happy with my decision purchasing the toshiba hd-a3 right around Thanksgiving last year. $149.99 shipped with 10 free hd-dvd's. Watching 300 on my sony 1080p (although the player only outputs 1080i) is amazing imo. And its a decent upconverting player too.
I see it as I purchased 10 dvd's for 15 each, and got the player for free. Shipping as well as no tax.
I also have a PS3 to make me platform neutral, so I can't complain.
If you have it, enjoy it. |

I guess that's where we differ. I prefer to watch my movies with full surround sound. there's no tv out there that can produce the same sound quality/environment as a good receiver and speakers (with sub of course!). |

...........and as I understand it Circuit City has extended their return policy to 90 days. Hey, with a cool name like Blu Ray how could it lose out. |

| I bought the XBOX HD DVD, no issues here, I got 10 movies and it upconverts all my current titles...I dont regret it a bit, I also have a Super Beta Hi Fi that still records every day for a friend of mine and it has outlived about 4 VHS units.. SL-HF650, Sony. |

| I have a VCR with the blinking 1200 on the display!! I use the PS2 for movies but it's a pain. Maybe someday I'll upgrade to one of those fancy DVD thingies. |

I bought th Toshiba HD-A30 around Thanksgiving as well as a PS3 to play Blu-ray. My prediction before purchasing was that Blu-ray would win based on my trips to CES and Sony's marketing prowess.
I completely agree with OB3 in regards to the Toshiba's performance which is why I decided to buy another one for my bedroom from VANN's for $110.00 shipped. I have a library of both formats already so I may as well get a player that can play HD-DVDs and upscales too. :2: |

| With all that's been in the news lately, I can't believe there's a thread about hp.org members spending $50 to go all the way with a flasher. :jester: |

i think the sb600 will be more than sufficient for my needs .... $190 compared to $320 ... then less the 50 bucks (and free shipping/not tax of course) .
plus i am thinking d300 for Xmas :) |

Hmmm, with the D300, you will WANT the SB-800!!! That's what's on my list anyway. My brother-in-law recently picked up a SB-800 for his D300 and loves it, so I figure I'll go the same way (when I can afford it).
What kind of camera body do you have now? |

Hmmm ... I have to rethink this now ... you have a good point. I have to do a little research.
Right now I am shooting with a D50 ... 50 and 85mm 1.8's, 18-70, and a tamron 28-200 zoom |
