I bought a actron pocketscan model cp9125 at autozone for 70 dollars give or take. I had a disk with all the codes and the ability to go to their website to down load newer codes for 2008. I does a good job reading and then you can erase or store the codes if it needs to go in for repair.

Does it also erase your check engine light, light on the dash when the repairs are done?

It is for my 2001 Hyundai Elantra which has 146,000 miles on it now. Since there seems to be no differece in the way it drives I am thinking it is a sensor. On my husbands honda civic we paid $150 for them to tell us it was an oxygen sensor when his check engine light came on. That was a huge waste of money that could have went towards repares so that is why I want to diagnose myself now.... at $150 a pop !!!!!!!

If you are in a hurry to read the code, check with your local Autozone type store. Autozone will read the ODB II codes for free.

However, even though you know the code that is causing the check engine light to come on, that doesn't always mean you know what is causing the code. After you get the code(s) form Autozone, you'll probably need to do some research on the Internet to find what the code represnts.

Long term, an ODB II reader like the Scangage is good to have. You can then read the codes yourself at any time - at home, while driving on vacation, etc... And the Scangage will work with any car made after 1996
