Well, after 6 months or so with the MDX, the wife has decided that she wants to trade it for a hybrid. I know that several of you have had them, and for the most part have liked them.

The MDX goes to the Toyota dealer on Monday, when we pick up our 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid. THIS one is supposed to be the car we keep. We will see. I welcome any feedback you other hybrid owners have had........

The auto makers love people like you...................those that buy on emotion rather on what the really need.

I wasn't looking for your approval, I think I specifically asked for comments from people that had owned a hybrid.

Since you know so much about me, I am sure you know more about what I need than I do. Fact is, you have no idea what I need in a vehicle. Thanks for the unsolicited comments.

Good choice.

If I were shopping for a replacement car for my wife, the Camry Hybrid would be near the top of the list. It works and it drives well.

i was actually thinking about trading my pilot in for a camry hybrid as well. with gas prices this high, it would be a lot easier on my wallet. i've done some research on several hybrids and the camry would best suit my needs (great MPG, roomy, more power than prius and civic hybrids, affordable, etc). i also like the accord hybrid, but insurance companies seem to recognize it as a 'performance sedan', so the camry got the top spot. good luck with the camry, please share your experiences with it here!

I hope you find a Camry board as friendly as this Pilot boad has been. Good luck on your choice, I also hope the pilot does not come out with a hybrid too soon. I know several people that have Camry hybrids and they all like them. I drive a Prius at work and it is fun to drive, lots of pickup and I can get into the 40+mpg range, according to its computer, without any troubles.

I wasn't offering my approval or disapproval.

Sorry if my comments struck close to home but when you move from a SUV to a luxury SUV then downsize to a car it does make a statement about your needs in a vehicle.

I always buy on both emotion and what I really need. Life would be very boring if we only bought things on need alone.

Good choice ncelk! The Camry Hybrid is a great vehicle, IMHO.

I think you'll like the HyCam a lot. I've been driving a Prius for the last 2.5 years and haven't had one bit of trouble with it. It gets driven pretty hard and still over the first 36k miles have gotten 45.2mpg (calculated with actual gas pumped in). The computer averages about 1.5% optimistic on the mpg reading.

Overall the Toyota hybrid system seems to be designed really well so the HyCam should treat you nicely.

Enjoy,

Jeff

Over at GreenHybrid.com it's referred to as a TCH. The Highlander is a HiHy, but the Camry is a TCH. :p

BTDT, loved the TCH, love the HiHy in a bigger way. ;)

Yep, and when I was a member over there I was "TCH2007"!!

And I'm still jay_man2 over there. The TCH forum is much more active than the HiHy forum. And no other auto-related board is as nice as this one, all things considered. :p

And don't forget that our very own Wilson Wong, wwong, has put together a great pad set for the Camry!

See pics of the pads in my Camry Hybrid over at GreenHybrid.com.

Sure, sure. While you may be able to read certain things into certain trends, I doubt this is one of them. Speaking as a trend-setter, of course.:p Well, recognizing that colorider is my mentor figure and role model.:D

I agree. Including motorcycle forums, I'm on about 6 or 7 others, but this is the best!

..........trend setter, sure! Follower perhaps but far from trend setter.:D jay, I love cars.....really, really love them. However I am practical as I work very hard for the money I make and want to stretch it out. Cars are a very poor use of money. As much as emotion would sway me toward a Corvette I have no practical or financial reason to own one. I need a SUV with room. I looked at other vehicles but none filled the bill as did the Pilot. My Pilot was a sound business decision. If you guys want to (in my opinion) waste your hard earned money buy whatever your heart desires because I know you brain had little to do with the decision.

I'm just curious as to why she wants to switch from the MDX? I'm sure gas approaching $4/gal has something to do with it. You'll lose a lot of "utility" for lack of a better word.

We considered a hybrid for wifey's next car, but the current way we drive it (she has a whole 5 minute commute with 2 stop signs and 2 stop lights, then my occasional use for a 1200 mile weekend road trip) doesn't lend itself to a hybrid's strengths.

And I agree about this being one of the best auto forums around....it's the only one I regularly look at and I haven't had a Pilot in almost 2 years...:(

As one of the few Pilot and Camry Hybrid members of this forum - I can offer encouragement in your decision. It really is one great car. I've got 30K problem free miles on it and average 36mpg in Maine winters and 42 in summer. Try to get the Michelin tires if you can - they last longer than the bridgestones (though tire suppliers may have changed by now).

It has great pick-up, a really decent stereo (unlike my Pilot), lots of bells and whistles like Bluetooth, and is very comfortable to drive. I'd buy it again. And its fun to be going down the road knowing you aren't using a drop a gas.

Edit: I'm "Mainer" over at that forum too

jay,

Thanks for promoting my Camry pads.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I have been off the board for a few days, so it was interesting to come back and view the comments. In reality, my wife and I came to the same conclusion. Most of the time, she is in the car by herself and is driving about 20k a year. We like having an SUV, however, we have access to my mom's 06 Pilot when we really need one, as well as have a GMC Sierra and Toyota Tundra available in the family when needed. It makes no sense to me to continue to drive those kind of miles with an SUV when a car will do. She has been driving my Maxima for the last month to see how it works day to day and found the car works just fine. So while we could afford to keep the MDX with no problem, there comes a time that you evaluate where you spend your money. Yes, I know that the hybrid carries a premium over a regular Camry. However, it has all the bells and whistles and in overall gas usage every month, it does much better than anything I am driving now.

Well you're not alone. :2: We just purchased a 08 Camry Hybrid - equipped much to the same level as our 03 Pilot EX cloth. In a silver that's a kissing cousin to the Pilot's Starlight Silver.

And thanks for the pointer on Michelins vs Bridgestones - we drove 2 TCH equipped virtually the same, and found the Bridgestone equipped one to be marginally rougher riding; could be that that unit had a balance issue. And the wear rating on the BS was 260 vs. 460 on the Michelin (I know they're not directly comparable across brands, but still..)

And my handle's Frodo on GreenHybrid.com.

Picked up the Camry tonight. I had no idea what tires were on it, as that was one thing I did not check on it last week. But, it had the Michelins on it. So far, so good, will see how it goes over the next couple of weeks.

Congrats from me too - What color did you get?

There are at least three of us Camry Hybrid/Piloteers on this forum , plus Jay as an alumnus

Be sure to check the forum in my signature - it's not as good as this one but will answer a lot of questions you might have.

Yes, I know I have to get photos up! I will do it this weekend once I can clean it. It was raining like crazy when we picked it up.

We got the desert sand mica, and added the rear spoiler. We have about 100 miles on it since we got it, mostly around town and it is showing 30.8 mpg. So far, so good..........

I had the Toyota all-weather mats in my Camry and really liked them. My brother-in-law recently sold his TCH, but kept the all-weather mats. If anyone here is looking to buy a set in the near future, I'll check with him and see what he wants for them. Either reply here or send me a PM.

TIA

:)
