rust on rear door window sash? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Have a 2004 Pilot EX-L

On the rear door window sash (the metal piece between the main window glass and the smaller glass) has become rusty at the lower end of the sash. Quite an unusal spot for rusting as there is no rust on the vehicle elsewhere and was therefore wondering if someone else has experienced this?

The dealer says that this is no longer under warranty as its a trim piece not a body part therefore the 3 year warranty has expired. Wants about $ 460 to get both sides replaced. The parts being about 40 rest about 4 hours of labour. Not appetizing :-(

Would anyone happen to have instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble the rear door, especially window parts? I would like to attempt doing this myself as I am not (yet) earning enough to pay $100 an hour for 4 hours to get this small thing done.

If I'm picturing the piece you're talking about, on my 2006, this piece is anodized black. Is this the pieces that is rusting. Can you give us a picture?

If you've never done it before, I wouldn't recommend you do a repair like this as a first-time DIY. Body/trim work is fairly specialized and has a lot of tricks and special tools. Very easy to screw it up and break something too. A body shop may be able to do this sort of thing with a very low labor charge that would make you screwing around with it very non-cost- effective.

Might be something to just live with.

Hey Mark, thanks for the quick responce. I'll try to get the picture and post it.

I am a first time DIY so would trust a specialists judgement. Thanks for the suggestion about getting some quotes from a few body shops. Will try that avenue and see what quotes I get ...

That's what I thought. So you have corrosion on the black anodized surface? I had always thought that this was stainless steel.

hi, fellow piloteers

Just recently washed my pilot and found out that my rear windows sills on both sides are bubbling and rusting already. The pilot is only 4 yrs old. This is getting me so angry. Anyone have any luck with the dealership in getting it repaired or any diy to fix it.

This seems to be a problem with the 2004s. Shame that Honda would not honour the 'rust warranty' and passing this part over as 'trim' instead of body.

As suggested by Mark, I did not try it myself in the fear of damaging something else.

My experience with the dealership was not that great on this issue. Firstly, in Canada the price for parts is outrageous. I finally managed to get the parts from the on-line Honda parts store in the US (less than 50% of the cost in Canada) and had a windshield / glass repair shop replace the sashes on both sides. All-in-all, I got this done at about 25% of the cost quoted by the dealership.

Hope this helps.

If you want to try DIY, I would suggest to get the body repair manual. I think the replacement is pretty straight forward and I believe I would be able to do it myself, if I had to do it next time.

Hi, Mujju

How much did it cost in total to get them replaced. By the way what part of Toronto your in. We can meet up sometime for a mini meet. I'm up in markham.

Hi Mike, it the total for me was about $ 130 ish. Don't remember exactly but was definitely less than 150.

I ordered the parts through http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ and had them replaced through an autoglass shop in Pickering (shop is in the same plaza as the Mitsubishi showroom on Kingston Road in Pickering)

I am not too far from you, South East Scarborough.

Thanks for the info guys!

My '03 has the same issue. It's the only spot on the car that's rusted!

I think I'll try your trick and order the parts and have a body shop do the rest...

Thanks!

I also have a 2003 with one vertical piece and one horizontal piece on one of the passenger window's corroded.

When I showed it to my dealer, he said there was nothing he could do (under warranty).

I have it too on my 2004 Pilot. Nothing too bad yet, but will eventually have it replaced as well. My last car (Pathfinder) lost all window sashes to this same problem and they wanted a fortune to replace them on all 4 doors...
