How long before you opted to replace the OEM battery that came with your Pilot? Is there any value, or advantage, in sticking with an OEM replacement battery?
humanoid
I'd say about 4 years and the OEM battery is crap. There are other batteries out there that are much better.

Got over 5 years from our Pilot and only replaced it as a precaution after it was killed 3 times a short span (interior lights left on, etc.)

6 years and going strong on the CRV battery.

If these are "crap", how long does a "good" battery last?
humanoid
My OEM one lasted a tad over 3 years, so I guess, N_Jay, you got good OEM ones then, because every car I had the OEM battery has lasted less than 4 years.

How long have replacement batteries lasted?

In general, battery life is shortened most by high temperatures.
While people worry about the winter killing your battery, it is the summer that does the most damage.

I get great life in IL, but got so/so life in SoCal.

My brother got terrible battery life in AZ.

Can't believe I'm gonna say this, but yeah, you're probably right  . I thought about the heat issue after I posted. Heat can really shorten the life of the battery.

Periods of disuse (e.g., leaving the car the airport for weeks at a time), deep cycling (leaving the dome light on overnight and having to jumper the battery to get going again), and short trips (cold starts and never driving far enough to full charge) are the biggest factors in battery life.

These days, the OEM batteries that ship with vehicles are Okay, generally equivalent to the cheaper models in aftermarket lines. Anything after 4 years or so is living on borrowed time and I replace at the first sign of weakness (slow starting in cold temps or after sitting any significant time).

If you have a Costco membership, I'd buy a battery there. Reasonable quality, reasonable price.

My 03 is still on the original. Thought about replacing this winter, but it still turned over strong after sitting outside for a few hours in -30C temperatures. However, I've never drained the battery, so thats probably the reason for its long life.

And the general cold weather (or lack of hot weather)

Note that a battery will last so long as you maintain it. The battery in my Pilot is not maintenance free. No battery is, unless it says so. Therefore, every 6 months you must check the water level of the battery. More if you live in a hot climate. Add distilled water as needed.

My Pilot turned 4 years old last month and I figured I was on borrowed time with the battery so I bought a new one at Costco. I swear that the idle learn procedure was in the manual but never found it. HP.org search came through for me. :)

The original battery in my '04 Pilot is still good. I Have the vehicle for about 4.5 years. The battery could be a few months older. Plan to replace it soon with a new battery from Costco. I've been using Costco batteries in my other vehicles for about 15 years now. I found them to be very good.

I have found in the past that sometimes you get what you pay for. Cheap batteries don't last very long. So it would behoove you to invest in a quality battery.

Go to this site for more info on auto batteries.

I agree.

Cheap batteries are usually not worth the trouble and expensive batteries are usually not worth the cost.

Get the cheapest battery that fits from a reputable retailer.

Costco has never done me wrong.

How can you be certain that the "cheapest battery that fits from a reputable retailer" is not one that is "not worth the trouble?"

Is physical size the only criterion of importance?
Shouldn't the CCA rating be considered, as well?

With CCA all you need is enough.

More is not really any better.

If you get the right "group" number it will have plenty of CCA.

If you buy from a reputable retailer (Costco as an example), their "cheap" battery will be good enough.

Still on my original battery. Last month it wouldn't turn over. Don't know why. Took the portable battery booster pack to it and it started right away. Had to get to work, so took the booster with me. I had no problem since. Don't know why it was dead. No lights were left on. I use the Pilot every day.

Went to Costco, bought a new battery the next day. I have it sitting with the "smart" trickle charger. When I get time I will swap out. But still no problems. Odd, but I think it is a warning sign.

I have never had an OEM battery last less than 5 years.

Hate to say it too, but N_...., N_J....., N_Ja...., N-Jay is ri..t. Must be the heat that kills them.

See I couldn't say it.

ROTFLMAO.

Made my day,
Thanks

Only had 31 months on my 2005 EX-L. New battery, even pro-rated was more than Auto Zone, so I went with theirs. Very disappointed with the quality of the battery, I have never had to replace a battery in a car that wasn't at least 5 years old.

I am also in agreement about heat shortening the life of a battery. Here in the Central Valley, a battery lasts on average about 3-4 yrs. In any of my Honda products previously owned, I have found the battery to be above average, lasting 4-5 yrs.
mxz600
So far, I've gotten 6-1/2 years on my other vehicle's original battery (Ford Escape) and it is still very strong. Here in MN, I usually get at least 6 years out of my vehicle batteries. The Pilot is only 2 years old, but hope to get at least 6 years out of the battery.

I have the original battery in my 2004 Pilot I got in Sep 2003, still going strong. It's a maint-free battery still showing green in the little window. The Stealership recommended replacement about 6 months ago, and they were willing to do that for $140. :p
If you are concerned, go ahead and replace it yourself. And I don't see any advantage of buying an OEM. Myself will wait for signs that it's tired, & then will by a quality comparable replacement.

We found the OEM battery only lasted 3 years, and I would rate it very low. That is the shortest we have ever had a battery last, and heat was certainly not an issue. I realize it is a different environment, but our pickup's battery has lasted six years and still going. The main problem, and another gripe I have with the Pilot is that one of our children will accidentally leave one of the cabin lights on when they grap the handle during the day, and it will go unnoticed until the battery is dead. I really wish it would shut the lights off like many other vehicles do before the battery is dead. This happened three or four times and certainly contributed to the batteries early demise. We carry one of the portable battery chargers around with us now.

Size and CCA are the primary considerations. We found that Consumer Reports highly rated the primary battery sold by WalMart (Ever Start). We have had it for a couple of years now and it still seems to be going strong.

You may want to consider switching to LED lights. I did so in my other car that my almost 4 year old is able to reach the light. LED could be on for days without killing the battery.

Our OEM batt showed 335 CCA (On a 2004) so we replaced it with another OEM batt for 65$ It was cheaper than Costco Autozone or Sears..
4 years in the Texas heat is about what I get on most battery.
alexct
My OEM battery is almost 6 years old and still going strong. It will be 6 years old in August.

I installed last week BatteryBrain to extend my battery life. Mine is only two year old.
I just got them through tweetys

Very cheap and worth it, I guess.
I will upload picture soon.

My 2005 EX-L battery died Easter weekend. I have owned the car 33 months. I was glad the warranty covered replacement, dealer gave no guff at all. This is the shortest time I have ever had a OEM battery last in 25+ years.

Our Pilot is just over 2yrs 4 months old, and it seems the OEM battery needs to be replaced. I drove over to my parents' house, and turned the engine off while I waited for them to come out to the car. I was there about seven minutes at the absolute most. i had a GPS charging and the HVAC fan running to circulate the air. When I started the car, I noticed how everything went blank, and the car almost didn't start. Later that day, I was washing the car, and I had the radio on inside. The ignition was in the accessory position only with nothing else plugged in or running. I knew the battery might go dead, but then I'd just jump it. Sure enough, just clicking when I tried starting.

I decided to get an Optima Red Top (#2 rated battery in Consumer Reports). The battery I received from the online seller I bought it from had about 5 volts when delivered. According to the sticker on top, it was purchased back in August 2005. :3: I found this out after I installed it. :bangh: :cursin:

I reinstalled the stock battery, and the car started right up. That indicator on top still reads green. Deciding on what to do next.

Any chance the terminal connections were loose, and when you swaped back you tightened them right up? This has happened to me on my previous vehicle. Not sure the green indicator is any comfort though. Can you have the battery tested at an autozone. You should have the Online battery tested too, it may still have more life than the stock.
Good luck GM

It's possible I guess. I did tighten them up snugly when I reinstalled.

I have learned not to trust the indicator. :( I might have to get it tested. Now I have to convince the online seller that I am not paying to ship this P.O.S. back to them.
