Anyone Using Yakima Skybox 16? - Click HERE for Original Thread
DanD
I am contemplating purchase of a roof cargo box for my 2005 Pilot and have shortlisted the Thule Atlantis 1600 and the Yakima Skybox 16.

I understand the rear door will open fully with the Thule mounted on factory cross bars. Does anyone know if the Yakima will also fit? -- Dan

Anyone??

Never saw the yakima on a pilot, but I have an older style of the atlantis... more like the evolution 1600 and it works very well and has taken ALOT of abuse.

Both are good companies with good products. an adjustment either way on the bars is all that is usually needed. go toa ski shop and ask to try bith on your vehicle to see how they 'fit'.

I have a Yakima 18 on my 2005, and love it!! No issues yet, and it's pretty fricking big. I call it the coffin.

And yes, I can open the hatch without hitting the cargo box, but it is damn close.

Just bought and installed a skybox 16S. It's a lot smaller than I expected. Yakima lists it at 81 inches long but it covers only slightly more than the length of the factory rails.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the skybox 18. Can anyone post photos of this setup? I'm wondering if the box hangs over the windshield at all...

I just installed the Yakima Skybox 16 and love it. It fits perfectly on top, does not overhang the windshield or get in the way of the rear hatch. The Skybox is adjustable and can be moved in different positions according to the crossbar settings.

I am surprised how much can fit in it, and it just the right size for my family without going overboard.

I went ahead and moved up to the Skybox 18. It's a perfect fit and maximizes the entire area above the roof without overhang or intrusion on the rear hatch's pathway.

Because of it's narrow and long profile, I can also still accommodate 2 bike racks (Yakima Viper) up top while the Skybox is installed - with space to spare.

If you're looking for a box that maximizes the potential for extra storage space without negatively impacting the Pilot's lines or access to the rear hatch, the Skybox 18 is the way to go.

I realize we're talking about different make/model carriers but an important consideration about length: Some posters reported problems with the Thule 2100. Set too far back and the tailgate won't open; set too far forward and the air doesn't fair over it properly. The wind gets under it causing buffeting. Not good. Most have reported no problems with the 1600.

No problems with the Yakima SkyBox 18 to 85-90mph. I've had the box permanently installed since I purchased it a few months ago and went on a couple of 800 mile+ road trips with no issues at all.

Would you guys mind throwing up some pics w/ your roof boxes on the Pilot?

I am debating Thule 1600 vs Skybox 16. To me the Thule looks better though Yakima seems stiffer. I don't like the extra $100 for silver paint.

I am going to use Yakima/Thule cross bars. Do any of you have a fairing? How about a moonroof - any noise or issues with it?

If you snowboard, how many boards will fit w/bindings?

Thanks

I purchased a black Thule Ascent 1600. It fits both my 2005 Pilot and my 2004 Subaru Forester XT using OEM cross bars, is quick and easy to transfer from one to the other and does not interfere with operation of the rear door. On the Pilot, it pretty much covers the roof without an overhang.

I needed the box for skiing and it will serve well in that regard. It nicely accomodates my 178 cm Scotts and has bags of room for more skis, boards and gear.

My preference would have been a Yakima 16, but I could not get confirmation as to whether it would fit on the Pilot OEM cross bars - that is why I started this thread in the first place. Last year I borrowed an older model Yakima box from my neighbour. It worked OK on the Forester but I could not get it to fit on the Pilot and did not want to incur the expense of aftermarket cross bars.

I like that the Yakima can be opened using a handle whereas the Thule can only be opened with the key. I would have preferred the greater stiffness of the Yakima but I am not concerned about the Thule being sufficiently robust and on the plus side, it weighs less. I like the look of the Thule, the quick connects work well and adjust easily, and it was less expensive than the Yakima.
