Reently there were a couple threads in which Pilots were hit either head on, or close to head-on and I was wondering if having the side steps or running boards would increase the safety of the collision ? In certain circumstances, would the additions metal on teh sides be beneficial to the interior passengers if hit on the side ??
Just wondering what other members here thought ?
thanks

I read somewhere not here maybe nhtsa but the metal sidesteps help in side crashes. calling tim from hondaacuraworld for the group buy!
copied from their website!
Add a sporty look, ease entry and provide additional side protection. |

| I think they would protect the doors from a 3-year-old on a Big Wheel. Beyond that, I'm skeptical. I'd have to see empirical evidence. |

The side steps make it safer and easier for my 5' 3" wife and both my kids to get into the Pilot.:4:

| they'll stop a wayward shopping cart but they fold up pretty quickly when hit by anything significant (one reason most offroaders will remove them if they're installed...and then install sliders. sliders are typically made much stronger as they need to hold the weight of the vehicle, not just some random 300# person) |

Only if they are heavy steel I-beams. But this type of running board would have a huge negative impact on fuel economy.
Other than that, they would have a negligible effect in an accident with another vehicle. It's questionable whether or not they would even help prevent damage due to an errant shopping cart. They don't stick out very far and a cart may go above and below the running board. |

A couple of years back, there was some significant flooding in Long Island City, NY which lifted up a sewer cap and started rolling like a quarter. I was parked waiting for the wife to get out of work. At first I couldn't make out what it was heading towards the Pilot in the heavy rain. Bam!, a sewer cap hit my left rear door. The aluminum running board took the bulk of the hit, significantly reducing the damage that would have occured on the door.
A couple of months ago I had a small toyota corolla hit me from the right rear. The corolla left rear view mirror was destroyed hitting my right rear door. The cars front tires hit my right running board signficantly reducing the damage to my car. Only damage I had was a scuffed up right rear door and a damaged running board. From the first incindent I only replaced the left running board and kept the right in storage. I'm glad i didn't sell it.
Love my running boards! |
