Anyone tried the the Audio quality when using the FM modulator to rout the audio from the overhead dvd player ??
I think there is 2 types of FM modulation the market
by Bose , power acustic , XM , ....
1- Wireless
2 - Wire from the overhead LCD dvd player to the FM cable of the sock Head unit.
What do you think ? Especially as per the above you don't need AUX !! |

Like many members on this board, I would recommend the wired version if you were to go the FM modulator route. If you live near any major city and use a wireless modulator, you're bound to get lots of interference from a local radio station. Plus, I believe a good wired FM modulator is designed to block out pretty much all other radio signals.
Installing an Aux input would provide the best sound quality overall and also allows you to input a portable music device (if that's important to you). But it typically costs more than a wired FM modulator.
I have my LCD monitors hooked up through a wired FM modulator. I had the stereo shop place the switch in the blank panel above the passenger airbag indicator next to the head unit. There's a picture in my photo gallery here. While the sound quality isn't the greatest, it's good enough for me and my family. The only minor complaint I can say about using the modulator is that I have to turn up the volume a good amount in order for everyone to hear the video sounds well.
So again, I'd say go with the wired connection if you choose to use an FM modulator. If you're a bit of an audiophile, go with the Aux. If you're torn, maybe you can go to an auto electronics shop and see if they have both setups so you can compare. |

Thanks, but please don't confuse me with N_Jay. I believe he's much more knowledgeable and popular here and has a bit of a higher post count than I do.
I don't have the overhead LCD display setup in my Pilot. I have two headrest monitors (7") and a Directed Electronics (DEI) DVD player sitting right underneath the coin tray (not an ashtray). It's all pictured in my gallery. For a single overhead lcd screen, I'd definitely go bigger than 7". The '06-'08 Pilots have an 8 or 9 inch screen (someone else needs to confirm). A 10" screen may or may not interfere with your rearview mirror (if that's a big issue for you). Some people have even installed 14-15 inch screens. You should try doing a search on this site for overhead DVD systems. There is alot of info about them as well as pictures. Again, if you want to get a feel for screen sizes, swing by a Honda dealer and sit in a Pilot with the DVD player or visit a car audio shop.
I don't know where you're located, but any reputable car audio/electronics shop in your area should be able to set you up with an Aux input. If not, they can be purchased online. Again, please search the site as I think there are two types of popular Aux input modules (don't remember the names and don't have any links) many here have used on their Pilots. For an install like this, I would probably only use a big box store (BestBuy, CircuitCity) as a last resort. |

ewissam - my dealer installed DVD system uses the wireless FM modulator and it works fine. I've never had an issue with static or interference even in big cities. Even if there happens to be a radio station broadcasting over FM88.9 (which is uses) the signal strength from the internal modulator must be much stronger.
Is wired better...it should be...but wireless works for a DVD system. |
