Anyone have problems with an aftermarket radio and bad reception?
I put in a DNX5120 and the reception is horrible. I pulled it back out today to make sure it was connected up fine and it was.
Anyone else experience this? I live about 20 miles west of Chicago, never have radio reception isssues with any radio I have, so geography is fine.
What did you do to fix it?
Thanks,

| Are you really sure it's properly connected to the antenna? The original antenna is powered, and there's a box in the headliner on the driver's rear side near the antenna grid in the window. See the illustration, item 21. I'm guessing your new setup isn't sending power to that box. |

Hmmmm...maybe that is it...don't know.
I used an adapter that plugged into the stock harness that used to plug into the Honda radio, then wired it up as listed. The only wire that got left unconnected was the solid orange - there is an orange/white for dimmer and and orange for dash light.
I will double check my connections to see if anything is off. That certainly sounds like it could be a possibility. However, I would assume that the antenna power thing on 21 would be getting it's power directly from the DC current, then using it to boost antenna, not connected to the new radio.

| There is an FM amplifier in my Pilot which requires a power connection. If I recall correctly, the aftermarket antenna adapter comes w/ a wire. You would hook that wire to the remote turn on wire of the Kenwood harness. I think it's blue. It's similar to the ignition wire, except that it only applies power when the radio is on. It's typically used to turn on amplifiers. |

Itchy & Ant - What did the antenna adapter look like? My Honda antenna just plugged right into the radio.
I bought an adapter, but I assumed I wouldn't need it. Did you use this one or something different?? |

yea thats the same one i got that i didnt need.
should directly plug in. |

ok, i will have to open it all back up again...i assumed the antenna went as a single wire all the way, not as a harness in the dash somewhere. i didnt even look at the antenna wire, hopefully it is a simple pull and swap.

Got it fixed.
The blue wire on my Kenwood was labeled "power antenna", which I took to mean something that would be for a power antenna. Maybe it is or isn't, but I connected it and radio works great. I guess that is sending power to the signal booster in the back as described in the thread.
Thanks to everyone for chiming in!

Hey, my 1st post on hondapilot.org. What a great site.
I'll add my experience for future searchers:
I installed a Pioneer DEH-P6000UB head unit in my '04 Pilot, with a 4ch amp for the door speak's and a mono amp for the sub. I used the Crutchfield dash and wiring harness kits.
When it came to the blue power antenna wire out of the head unit, I ran it straight from the head unit to each amp for remote turn-on, and did not feed it back into the Pilot's wiring harness (I saw no reason to).
My FM reception was barely there and I could get no AM at all. After seeing this thread about the Pilot's antenna having an amp, I spliced into the blue head unit power antenna lead and fed it back to the Pilot's wiring harness. FM and AM are both strong now.
FWIW, this head unit is awesome. USB and Auxilliary input for XM radio. I have 60 CDs on a SD card (320Kbps mp3). No more CDs in the Pilot. |
