Full Size Spare? - Click HERE for Original Thread
CoPilot2
I am a new member and new Pilot owner. Just purchased a used 2005EX-L and it seems like a great vehicle. After crawling over it for a few days I have decided to update a few things. One is replacing the mini spare tire with a full size wheel.

Does anyone have experience in replacing the mini spare with a full size wheel/tire? I understand if it does fit in the same location it will extend down further.

Thanks for your input.
humanoid
Yes, a full sized spare will fit. The use of the search function would have revealed that to you. Find some time and click on the sign in my signature that says "NOOB". Welcome to HP.org BTW!
CoPilot2
humanoid, Ahhhhhh such are the ways of the experienced and wise. Thank you for the instruction and the NOOB site. I am not always the sharpest tool in the shed but at least I'm a tool :)

Ha! LOL :D

Okay, I searched under the following key phrases: "full size spare" "full sized sapre" "spare tire" ..... all I get is this post I started and another one about some guy mixing tires. Any suggestions on where to look or what search words will get me the right posts/threads?

Thanks! Now, I'm not sure I'm even a tool. More like a rock. :(

Here is a thread:

Not your fault. The search seems to be having issues. There have been hundreds of users that swap out the temp for a full size spare. Check out the classifieds to see if there are any used wheels listed.

For example, go to Google and enter the expression:

"full size spare" site:hondapilot.org

You'll get better results. This site's search function has severe limitations. You can't use Boolean expressions and the search string is limited to 25 characters (IIRC).

Full size. Barely visible...

In a thread or three, I've posted this and other pictures from when I swapped out the donut for a full size spare. Here I was airing up the spare while lowering the donut.

Yep, lots of threads about full sized spares. I did the same thing after I picked up the same vehicle. Got my 05 Alloy rim off ebay, got a used Michelin LT4 w 7/32" tread (to go along with my LTX M+S) from a used tire dealer, got a TPMS unit from MajesticHonda.com, and had the used tire dealer mount the TPMS and tire. Had a chance to use the spare not too long ago when the wife managed to run over, and embed a key into the tire. Tore up the tread block also, so I had to replace the almost new LTX. Discount Tire was very helpful and got me all set up. Allowed me to buy Road hazard for my other 3 tires, even though I didn't buy the tires from Discount Tire. They even put the spare back for me after they put on the new tire.

Congrats on the Pilot and welcome to the site.

Yes, you can easily replace the temp spare with a full-size spare (which I have done).

Actually, if you look in the owner's manual, you see that when changing a flat, they tell you to put the flat tire where the temp spare is.

The only exception is that if there's an aftermarket hitch installed. Some of them are shaped so that a full-size wheel doesn't fit properly.

We have the OEM towing package installed, and I don't notice the spare tire hanging down any lower.

BTW, you can go with any wheel from a 2003-2007 Pilot... it all depends on if you care about having a matching alloy or are fine with a steel wheel.

I bought a used matching alloy (in great condition) from someone on this site in the Classifieds section.
Tosh1
Btw: how much you paid for used OEM rim on Ebay?
Mine cost me a 60$..?
mgpaulus
I paid $115 shipped for my 05 EX Alloy rim, a year ago.
sjlee
I got mine from someone on this site for $94 shipped via FedEx Ground. It was an alloy wheel from a 2003 Pilot, but it looks exactly like the ones on my 2005 Pilot. The previous owner even left the OEM tire on it. It had 58k miles on it, but still has enough tread to be used as a spare.

When I get new tires, I'll have them discard the spare tire and replace it with one of the old ones.
Tosh1
I just checked my receipt - $65.- for rim plus $25.- shipping...

I am heading off to junk yard this weekend to find a full size spare for my Pilot (P235/70R 16). Can I get any wheel this size or have to be from Pilot? I guess not but want to make sure
dustino8
The new rim will need the same bolt pattern (5x114.3) and the center bore will have to be at least as big as the pilot rims. I can't remember off the top of my head what the bore is. 66.1 or 66.7??? I could be way off.

You'll have to make sure that the wheel/rim is the same specs as the ones for the Pilot. You'll want to verify this, but I believe the measurements are 16x6.5, and the bolt pattern is 5x114.3

I'd recommend sticking to a Pilot wheel just to make sure you get the right size. You will be able to use a wheel from any 2003-2008 Pilot, as the tire size remained the same. Just an FYI, the LX had steel wheels, which are probably fine for a spare, but if you want a matching alloy wheel, you'll have to find one from 2006-2008.
Happydady
Thanks for advices.
Guess I should stick to Pilot wheels.

That's what I did - bought a new LX steel rim from the dealer (I don't remember what I paid) and mounted an old OEM Integrety.

Some members here have used some GM wheels. Several others have used the wheels off of an Element; I believe they have the same specs as the Pilot wheels. The site sponsor has the Element steel wheel on their website:

http://www.hondacuraworld.com/Merch...ategory_Code=HE

This would probably be more expensive than a wheel from an auto salvage yard but most likely cheaper than a brand new Pilot wheel.

I upgraded my donut spare to a full size w/ the Pilot LX steel wheel and an extra used GY Integrity I had; this was done for greater peace of mind if my family decided to do a road trip. My wife absolutely despises the donut spare.

The Element's spec on edmund

Read NJGuy's post. Yes, some people have used an Element wheel, but I think you have to stick with the 215/70/16 size which was the stock size for the Element DX/LX/EX for all years (don't use an SC wheel). I would NOT, however, use the stock Pilot tire size on an Element wheel.

I don't really agree. You should be able to use the Pilot's 235/70/16 tires on an Element rim without any problems. According to the Pilot & Element owners manuals, they both use 16 x 6 1/2JJ wheels. Besides, why would someone looking for a full size spare get a smaller/mismatched tire? :) . Their bolt patterns are the same as well.
The only minor concern I would have would be the difference (if any) between the two wheels in their load ratings. If I didn't get such a great deal on the steel Pilot rim I have, I would have gone with an Element steel wheel.

HappyDaddy: looking back at my suggestion, getting an Element wheel and then buying and mounting a Pilot sized tire on it probably isn't the simplest solution. But I just wanted to give you another option to choose from. Good luck with your search. :29:
Happydady
Called local junk yards around, they gave me price of $125.

I don't want to create another thread, here is another question.
Is the light in the meter (cockpit) suppose on all the time? Is it normal, I remember my accord's light only on when I turned on the head light

Sorry, double post

Hmmm, you could be right. I was just going by the fact that the Element's stock wheel size is two sizes smaller than the Pilot's.

That's WAY too much for a used wheel. Check out the classifieds section on this site. I bought a matching alloy wheel for our Pilot on here for under $100 shipped. The seller even threw in the tire... granted it was the OEM tire with 55k miles, but it has plenty of tread left to be useful as a spare.
NJGuy
FYI there's a member here selling his full size spare mounted on a GM wheel in the classifieds section. In the case you're interested and don't mind having a non-Pilot wheel, see what the seller wants for it plus shipping.

I checked on ebay for Pilot spare time and most of don't have th center cap. My question is does it matter because I think when we put the spare on the rack, we have to remove the center cap anyway right?

The center cap is for cosmetic purposes only. You are correct that you have to remove the center cap when mounting the tire.

Check in discounttire online (has a local near my city), after input my pilot info, this is one of recomended.

Five X
16X7 5-100/114 40SM ,

It doesn't give much info so I don't know for sure that it will be ok for the pilot. We planning to go on the long trip soon so that why I need one. Check on ebay is too expensive, the used one with no tire cost 100 or more plus shipping. I don't know how people here got from ebay so cheap (about $60)

http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...12307&tc=MBMFIX

EDIT: Just rer-ead the post from sjlee, the spec is not exactly same

Have you checked the Classifieds section? There are at least a couple posts of people selling stock wheels. You might also consider posting up a "Wanted" thread there.
Happydady
Yes, some are biger wheels, some are for local pickup only, the other sold out, the rest PM them but no respond

Give it a few days... someone might reply to your post. Also, I'm not sure if you've done so yet, but also check out CraigsList.

Those wheels you are showing should fit the Pilot. It looks like they actually have 10 holes for the wheel studs/bolts. This is because the wheels are designed to fit two different types of bolt patterns: 5 x 100 and 5 x 114(.3). The rim is a 1/2 inch wider than stock, but pretty much all tires in the Pilot's size should fit no problem. Tire Rack also sells steel rims for the Pilot for $55 + shipping.

If you PM'd some of the members selling the tire you want and they haven't replied yet, you may be able to send them an email through this site.

If you really need a full size spare and you're pressed for time, you probably will have to shell out a bit more money that you'd like. Sometimes it's hard to find a killer deal on things like this; most of us who have gotten a great deal either waited for the opportunity or bought out of want, not need.

I didn't see any $55 wheel. The cheapest for 16" is $95

I just visited the link. In the frame where the wheels are shown, there are two tabs on top (and bottom). One of them says "Alloy Wheels" and the other one says "Steel Wheels". Click on the steel wheels tab, and it'll show up.
sjlee
If you do end up getting the wheel from TireRack, remember that you'll also need to get a tire, so you might order that from them as well. You might be able to get them to mount it for you for a nominal fee.

Yesterday I had to use my full size spare for the first time since I put it on a year ago. I was on a return trip to Oklahoma from a Florida vacation when I discovered one of the tires completely flat after a lunch stop. AAA changed the tire and I took it to a nearby Sam's Club, where I had bought the four tires originally, but they said they couldn't repair the flat because the cut was too long, and didn't have the Integrities in stock. So I was very glad to have the full sized wheel for the almost 300 miles left to home. Moral of the story: investment now will pay dividends later.

Larry :)
Wolfman_matt
I had a similar experience to Larry's today when I was 300 miles from home and the right rear tire blew out (only 3000 miles on my new set of tires to boot).

I've had a full size spare for years as insurance for long distance travel especially with the family. The donut won't get you far and obviously limits your speed.

If you haven't gotten one you really need to pull the trigger...

As as side note the large hole left in my tire was not repairable but luckily I have free replacement on the tires from Discount Tire (Tires.com) which is a great deal. Their service is also very impressive so check them out if you have them in your area.
LChisum
I have to put in a plug for Sam's Club. I have done all my replacement tire business with them for a number of years. In the past they have fixed a flat for free on an OEM tire, just because I had bought tires from them. They replaced the damaged tire referenced in my above post under their pro rated road hazard warranty, and rotated all my tires. All this for a grand total of $10.20. What a country!

Larry :D
