Whistling Humming type noise when I let OFF the accelerator at any speed - Click HERE for Original Thread
bryanbush
03 Pilot with just under 50K miles. I bought the Pilot at 38K miles. I had the vehicle delivered from out of state and never test drove it before delivery. Since owning it, the vehicle makes a clearly audible whistle type humming noise after I speed up to about 30-40 or more and then LET OFF the accelerator. The noise fades out if I accelerate, then promptly chimes back in when I let off the gas.

The noise does not really change pitch when I swerve (don't think it is wind noise). I don't have cross bars. I don't have a bug deflector.

I have had the following parts replaced under warranty in the last 12 months: 2nd gear kit; transmission (twice, with the second replacement last week); powertrain control module; thermostat; transaxle assembly; a/c belt tensioner.

The noise has never gone away. Each time the dealer replaces something they say the noise is gone. I go down to the dealer, drive around the block with the service manager and then leave it for them to fix it.

They recently rotated and balanced the tires (OEM wheels with Integrity tires). I thought it might be tire noise but since the noise only comes when I let off the accelerator I don't think it is tire noise alone.

The noise is present in neutral, or any drive gear. If I speed up to a fast speed and then let off the gas and coast to a stop, the noise is still audible at like 20mph or so. The noise does not dissapear if I brake, but dissapears if when I get to a slow speed after braking.

Can someone please help me know what the problem is? My dealer is clearly inept.

Sorry, I don't know what could be causing this trouble. But, you might want to give your location. If your local dealer is that bad maybe someone here could recommend a different dealer or an independent repair shop that would do a better job.

Good luck!
Larry.

Maybe a long shot, but I remember seeing a TB regarding the drive shaft (going to rear diff) carrier bearing causing a whistling or high pitched noise between 30 and 50 mph. Seems it would be a fairly easy thing to check.

I think you're talking about this April 2005 ServiceNews Article (scroll to page 3).

bryanbush, does that sound like your issue?

Good luck!
Larry.

larrys I am feeling good about your response. I will be at the dealer bright and early. I read a post on here about the carrier bearing before (http://www.hondapilot.org/forums/sh...le&pagenumber=2). When I told my dealer to check the carrier bearing, he said the bearing is in the A/T so that problem is resolved with a new transmission. I now have learned that there are two parts that can be called the carrier bearing. and the other I suspect is the part not yet fixed on the drive shaft. The service news is very helpful. I hope it is the problem. A big thanks in advance. Where can I get access to other service news? Those are treasure trove.

I used to have some front end noise and I thought it was some carrier bearing but this was with my bridgestone A/T revo and after replacing it with new tires after 60K+ miles of use, the bridgestone duelers H/L alenza, the noise was gone.

Larry. indeed, it was the prop shaft. Took in the vehicle with the service news. They dropped out the shaft and we went for a ride. NO NOISE. I was so happy because the noise has plagued me for over a year. So tell me does driving 12K on a bad prop shaft = gauranteed problems on the u joints, differential, etc? I wonder what other damage is lurking that will appear as soon as my extended warranty is up.

Remaining problem: no propr shafts available from Honda. Dealer says it may take weeks to get the part in. My dealer wants to put the bad shaft back in while we wait for the new part, but I don't want to do that. I would love to not hear the hissing noise all summer (worse, cause more damage with the bad part on the vehicle). Does teh VTM-4 engage on dry roads in the summer? Is it safe to drive around with no prop shaft?

I have no idea of driving on a bad prop shaft would do any harm. My Pilot is 2WD! I know almost nothing about the VTM-4 system. Don't forget it was belundy who remembered seeing the ServiceNews Article. I just found the direct URL to it.

If you can get the part number, maybe you can call around to other dealers to see if they have the parts. Have you tried our site sponser HondaAcuraWorld.com?

Good luck!
Larry.

yes yes. belundy. many thanks. you saved me.

update: the part showed up despite being on back order. I am nervous the dealer is pulling it from a junkyard. would a dealer dare do that?

Glad I could help--forums are great in that the chance of one person recalling any one thing is much higher!

The Service News links were gold--thanks Larry!

I can't imagine that driving without the shaft would damage anything;the VTM system may complain and you wont have 4-wheel. Plus, your gas mileage may increase-ha! I'd get the tech to call his hot line and get a ruling.

Did the dealer check other dealers for the shaft/bearing? Haven't looked at the shaft, but would be curious as to why the bearing cannot be replaced separately.
