cloth vs leather - Click HERE for Original Thread

I am looking to purchase a new pilot very soon. Have been trying to decide if I wanted to pay the difference for the leather in considering an EX vs. EX-L......I know the EX-L has a few other features, but the vehicle is for my wife and other than the backup camera she doesn't care about the moonroof. We have had leather on the last two vehicles and it was great with the kids and cleanup. Anyone have experience with the cloth in the 2009 Pilot?

$3,000 for leather seats, seat heaters, backup camera and moonroof is a pretty hefty price tag. Maybe the difference is more like $2,500 after discounts.

For me, I like the luxury of leather and my wife loves the moonroof. The backup camera is fantastic - i don't know how we lived without it on the '04.

If money is tight, I agree that you could live without these luxuries...

To answer your question, i have no experience or knowledge of the cloth interior. However, the 40+ Pilots on my dealer's lot only include a handful of EX's with cloth, so your selection might be somewhat limited.

I would go for leather. It smells nice, it's easier to clean, it's more durable, and will add value to your car when you sell it years from now. It's a hefty price but my experience is that it's worth the extra money, both now and in the future.

get the leather - for $2500 bucks I think it is worth it. It just "upscales" the car quite a bit and you feel great riding in it. Think about it this way.

$2500 over three years would cost you about $10 a week - less than $2 a day. Don't eat out once a week and you have those nice heated good smelling seats paid for!

While leather does "upscale" the vehicle, cloth is actually more comfortable for most people, especially if you live in a climate with big temp swings - leather absolutely sucks in the hot or cold.

The leather in the Pilot is also pretty cheap leather. I've seen some older models where the leather is not wearing very well and looks pretty bad.

That being said, look carefully at whether the stuff you get with leather is important to you. I didn't realize that getting a EX rather than an EX-L got me a XM-capable vehicle rather than an XM-ready vehicle - the non-L doesn't have the XM receiver which is expensive.

After I had one with leather, if you can afford it, get the leather.

Cloth is less maintenance but it's just like seating on a cloth chair at times.

Leather is way better...

Not sure if Acura's leather is any better than Honda ones...

I have the cloth seats, I'm very happy with them, they're comfortable and breathe well. I myself would not find $2,500 of additional happiness in having leather. I've had leather in other cars, and it's nice, but I don't miss it. If you have kids, your car is going to look like crap either way. :2:

Thanks for the info...I think we have decided to go with the cloth...hope we are making the right decision....we are trying to keep the payment in a specific range.

I made a deal this evening and plan to close on Friday.

Hope I can find a good fabric stain protector and apply it.

i have 2 friends who both own MDX's, and from the few trips i have taken in their cars, i can say that the MDX leather is bit higher in quality than my Pilot. it feels softer and more supple. then again, Acura is the 'luxury' line, so i guess its expected. i have not sat in a 2009 EX-L yet, but i probably would go for it over the cloth seats. the seat warmers really come in handy on cold days, and the backup cam is very helpful as well (especially when parallel parking!) and just as others have said, an EX-L will have a higher resale value later on, if you decide to sell or trade it in.

This should solve your problem:

Just picked up an 08 and we went with cloth. Actually our SE trim was perfect with the sunroof and XM included so it was a no brainer...but we were targeting cloth anyway.

IMO, it's more comfortable for our 3 kids and wears better for the abuse. Leather will quickly show scuffs, etc in my experience. If you treat the cloth with some stain resistor and do general clean up as needed, it should remain clean. In the end, I think you can permanently mar a leather seat much easier than a cloth. Unless it is ripped, you can almost always get a cloth seat clean again.

THat seat cover for the 09 looks like a decent idea, too. Good luck!

Totally agree. If I could have got an EX Navi in cloth, I would have done so. Premium quality cloth is more comfortable, warmer in the cold, cooler in the heat, and its maintenance is easy.

Wetokie and other brands are $$$. I have these on my 08, the front seats are not "perfect" but for the cost these work for my needs. The ones for my Odyssey are a "perfect" fit.

I like the feel of cloth but leather seems to be easier to clean, easier to maintain, and I feel it's much more durable. Leather can be real hot in the summer and very cold in the winter but we live in SF so the temp differences aren't too extreme. Our last 6 cars had leather. Transporting our kids and their friends meant lots of "stuff falling and dripping everywhere and the leather was great. It provided a quick and easy cleanup. But, to each his/her own.
netman88
Leather and cloth is subjective.

I had leather in one and cloth in another.

My experience, leather always feels and smells good but you have maintain it and clean it or it will crack.

On a partly related note I had the opportunity today to sit in a Silver Touring with the Blue Leather interior. I really like it and it looks nothing like the brochures. To me it looks a lot more luxurious than the gray. I have finally decided on a Silver EX-L w/ RES and Blue interior. I am ready to buy as soon as the prices come down. I will wait until the third quarter for some sweet incentives.

We ended up getting the EX with cloth seats. They are of high quality...I am still concerned about staining their light color. I will be looking for a protectant...will have to do some research. The dealer wanted $500 for Xzilon int/ext. I don't know that I want to pay that much....will wait and see what I can find on the web. If anyone knows of a good product to research (other than Scotchguard) let me know.
Thanks.
Wolfman_matt
I much prefer cloth due to the hot/cold comfortability and durability.

I have 3 young kids and no issues as long as you don't go with a very light color you will be fine.

Save the $2500 for accessories.

No one mentioned the option of getting after market leather. Based on my research, after market leather is similar or in most cases better than factory leather. What is general opinion on getting an LX trim and getting after market leather on it? In this case, one can save significantly more than $2500.

I got aftermarket leather on my 1997 Accord V6. At the time it cost $1200. There were a lot of different qualities of leather to choose from, and what I purchased was much bettter than the pseudo-leather that comes stock on most cars, including Hondas.
whizmo
After market leather can be very good or very bad - it depends on who you get. And they installers are going to be tearing your car apart and putting it back together, an opportunity for problems down the road.

I would never recommend forgoing factory leather to get after market unless you can't get what you want in factory. It's much more cost effective and reliable to have leather done when the car is being built. (Keep in mind there is more to an EX-L vs. an EX than just leather.)

I think the factory cloth has pretty good stain resistance built in, but if you want more, just use a can of Scotchguard on your own. You'll probably do better than a $500 pack. In most cases, the dealer pack IS just a can of Scotchguard and a wax job.

Scotchguard has a specific auto product.

I wouldn't put any "preventive" materials on the seats. They're called "cloth" but probably more related to plastic than cotton. They won't stain that easily, in my experience anyway.

Doesn't anyone have permanent stains on theirs that wouldn't later come out?

Scotchguard is just another chemical.

I think I read that it's not really good stuff and has links to cancer and birth defeats.

I read that a few places.

Here's one link of it:

I'm passing also on that.
