I'm looking at an 09 Pilot but had a question for the forum. The dealer is a bit fuzzy on this one and I think the parts folks are unsure because of the new vehicle.
I was told the truck is tow ready, but you have to buy a wiring harness. The harness according to the dealer is $245 and it includes a rear mounded non-adjustable brake controller. I've never heard of a non-adjustable brake harness. The price is a bit steep too.
Does the truck have a socket under the dash to plug an after market controller into? If not, how could a controller that is not adjustable work without locking up your trailer brakes.
Last question, the rear plug is a standard 6 wire RV connection right?
Thanks everyone. |

See attached for install instructions.
Wiring kit includes all you need. This is only included on the Touring...lesser models can tow with the hitch minus the wiring harness. |

I sent you a PM, but how can the EX-L tow wihtout any wiring at all? I know on the older models, you could buy an after market pigtail to plug in under the rear bumper.
So the full kit has a non-adjustable brake controller then? |

You can tow a trailer, however...the braking system is dependant upon your specific options of your trailer. Electric brakes or no brake system...the wiring harness provides the electrical hookup for running lights, brake lights and turning signals and backup/reverse lights.
Non-Adjustable refers to lighting only of the brakes...Not a control system of using air or electric.
It is a 7 blade RV connector. (center 7th pin is reverse lights) |

| And the dealer wants $245 just for the wire hook up? That is just plain nutz. Do you know if the truck has a provision for the brake controller under the dash at all? |

I saw the harness on the web for $145...but you would need to install it yourself. If the $245. price includes labor from the dealer that makes sense.
If you need a Brake Controller unit you most likely need to visit a truck/speciality shop to obtain that.
You will need to go aftermarket and then have an professional expert do the install for safety reasons. |

This is from the manual online. It looks like it does have provisions for a brake controller under the dash and the pig tail is under the bumper. You can get a connector from U-Haul for under $40.
A factory installed, 4-pin gray
connector is located under the
instrument panel near the top of the
parking brake pedal. This connector
has all of the circuits required to
install most electric trailer brake
controllers. A jumper harness to
adapt your electric trailer brake
controller to the vehicle is included
with the optional Genuine Honda
trailer hitch kit. To obtain a trailer
hitch kit, see your dealer.
Have a qualified mechanic install
your trailer brake controller
following the trailer brake controller
manufacturer’s instructions. Failure
to properly install the trailer brake
controller may increase the distance
it takes for you to stop your vehicle
when towing a trailer. |

| I just picked up my Touring and it included the Brake Controller Adapter Harness (It was in the glove box), but I'm not sure if that is the case with any of the other trim levels. |
