03 Pilot ignition problem - Click HERE for Original Thread

Yesterday my ignition cylinder went. It had been acting funny for a couple of days, trouble getting the key in etc. I brought it in for an inspection sticker to the local garage and then it wouldnt start, couldnt get key to turn at all. They said it had finally quit. They replaced it but then it wouldnt turn over. They said it needed to be recoded by the dealer. is this true? I just called for progress and they said the dealer was charging $180 to recode the key to my key. I am aghast, after the cylinder was $236. Just checking if all this sounds ok to those with more experience that I. Would it have been cheaper to take to dealer? I really coudlnt because we could not get it out of park until it was replaced.

It depends on how they did it.

If they changed the lock cylinder but did not rekey the cylinder to your original key, you can only use the new keys and they have to be programmed.

Most mechanics wouldn't know how to rekey a cylinder, only locksmiths normally do. However, your car wouldn't start, so you didn't have much choice on where to take it.
