I just purchased a 2004 Pilot EX-L. It only came with one key and one remote, so I had a duplicate made today at the dealer.
Dealer pointed out that the keys (both new and old keys) do not work in the rear hatch. The hatch has the VIN # sticker on it, so I am pretty sure the hatch has never been replaced.
It looks like the lock cylinder might be gummed up with road salt. I put some PB Blaster in it to free it up, but it will not move. Key only goes in 1/4 of the way or so.
It appears someone might have super-glued it... but there is no residue.
I contacted the previous owner, and he said lock was never changed. He is honest, and I believe him. The hatch works if the remote is used to unlock the doors, however...
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks,

I don't know. I don't think I have ever used the key in the tailgate of my '03. |

My '07 doesn't even have a place to put a key in the tailgate!
Only one place for a key from the outside: driver's side door. |

Many locks will get gummed up from never being use. That's why it's a good idea to use your key to unlock your door once in a while.
Try spraying a liberal amount of WD40 in the cylinder, then rap with a mallet.
If that doesn't work, a locksmith can remove the cylinder and service it. |

| since I can remotely unlock all the doors and tailgate, I will probably just superglue that tailgate key/lock. |

Hello,
I did call a locksmith, and he suggested the WD-40, which I had already used.
He suggested doing it for a week or so, then using a mallet (also suggested on this forum).
Well, it worked! I lubed it and used a little hammer, and it works fine now.
Thanks!
