03 EX-L AWD with 88K miles. 2000 miles ago the 2-3 upshift started delaying - not very bad, but certainly noticeable. Yesterday while taking a slight corner at about 30mph the car rather violently "shifted" down, or at least it seemed like it did - almost a "bang" - then returned immediately to normal behavior. Thought to myself "there it goes" but it drove fine for another 45 miles, before doing it yet again under similar circumstances, only this time it was more prolonged, and a bit more on the violent side. I was just driving straight down the road, letting off the gas at approx 45mph... So, am I correct in thinking this tranny is about to expire? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. I do have a dealer-installed towing package, have followed maint schedules, and have a 100k warranty, so if its going, I'd like to get it fixed now before the warranty runs out...

IT sounds like the tranny but it also could be a motor or tranny mount. I would take it in ASAP and have them look at it and fix it since you are still under warranty.

By the way, the jet kit was done back in 2004. Today, while shifting into reverse to back into a parking space, the trans thought about it for awhile while the engine rev'd up, then shifted hard, with the same "bang" as in the two previous occasions. I have a service appointment for Monday, just wondering what you all think is the issue...

The transmission, or any of the parts that control the transmission.

How often have you drained and refilled the tranny fluid?

When was the last time?

I had the dealer change the trans fluid at 60K. Today, I realized what it was doing - rapidly downshifting from either 4th straight to 2nd, or at other times from 3rd to 1st. Revs shoot up to 5K, then it upshifts, not so rapidly, to the correct gear. Also had an instance of not going into reverse for a few seconds, then slamming into gear. Dealer tomorrow....

Let us know what you find.

124,000 trouble free miles (except for one EGR and one Fan transistor), bit we all need something to worry about on those long drives.

Dealer could not duplicate the gripe, so they're keeping it another day... Classic.

The tech took it home, and it happened 3 or 4 times to him on the way home, alone. Verdict by the Honda rep (service manager couldn't make the decision himself) is new (ie rebuilt) trans which will be covered under warranty, as will the rental car they are giving me while the truck is out of service. In my case, the extended warranty was well worth it. I'll update once I get the car back.

Got the car back from the dealer tonight after dropping it off last week. Replaced the trans and torque converter under warranty. Amazing how smoothly it shifts now - over time you get used to the tranny loosening up, with the result that the shifts lag and are less crisp, but you don't notice until it gets way out of whack - now it is smooth and precise. Had a loaner/rental car provided by Honda Care, and my out of pocket was $0.00 - didn't even have to fill the loaner with gas before returning it. Pleasant experience overall, all things considered....
