Just wondering how many Honda Pilot owners out there that are considering giving up the safety and comfort of their vehicle for Gas savings? I found this article and Edmunds that was interesting....
Edmunds SUV Article Actual calculations indicate you may not be saving as much as you think.
There seems to be a mass rush to smaller fuel efficient cars right now. Checking with my local Honda dealers, they said they can't even keep the Civics in stock. There is a two month wait for the Fit in our area.
Honda for whatever reason is now going to produce the Pilots and Ridgelines in Alabama instead of Canada. Canada a ramping up for Civic production.

My tree-hugging wife started to talk about getting a Prius several months ago ... I think I've talked her out of it.
I'm waiting for a serial hybrid with 4-wheel-hub motors and no power robbing brakes or transmission. GM, the archetypical big boy, was already promoting this idea several years ago with their skateboard concept and an English company has been making this work for a couple of years on a Mini, with Ford/Volvo now showing real interest. If the Chevy Volt succeeds as a proof of concept and goes through a couple of improvement generations I might be willing. In the meantime, I've been subsidizing Jay's parallel hybrids.

Yep! Consumers are very reactionary, and unpredictable.
Nothing new.

I think that move was made about a year ago.
I am sure they are doing it to match capacity to need, and vehicle to market as well as they can given that consumers are very reactionary, and unpredictable.

Yes, I am a fan of both Science Fiction and Space Fantasy. |

Now that I traded my Jeep GC in for the Pilot, the Pilot is used to tow the trailer to my farm (need to tow stuff if you own a farm), and to haul stuff when we go to my in-laws' cabin for the weekend.
I will get 22 mpg in general driving this time of year. I would save more money if I could convince my wife that she doesn't have to drive 20 miles to get to the 'good' garage sales. Some battles just aren't worth the fight after 26 years... |

Nope- just picked up my 2005 EX-L a month ago. Drove it to Colorado and back- up and down mountains, some soft off-roading trail, etc...and it was a wonderful vehicle. Averaged about 23mpg there and back. The 4wd, room, reliability and safety make it a nice vehicle.
With that said, my fiance currently has a 2 mile roundtrip drive to work- I have a 60 mile daily round trip. We have a 2004 Toyota Corolla that gets 34mpg pretty consistently and that will be paid off in 2 months so that offsets the Pilot nicely. |

I traded in a 2007 Loaded Civic for my Pilot, and regret every moment of it as fuel costs ar ehigh for me. I did it because I needed space at the time with my new son, but now realize I could use the Civic.
With that said, I will keep my Pilot and run it until it dies. |

Walk the 2 miles--it will be very good for you health and will spare the Pilot (I'm assuming that your fiancée takes the Corrolla, right?). For a couple of years I had a 2.5-mile round-trip commute and it is not good for a car, but a 2.5-mile daily walk is very good for your health. Oh my, looking at your screen name, I guess you already know this. Oh well, welcome to HP.org! |

I drive the fearsome Corolla :). She drives the Pilot- walking isn't an option due to having a 3 year old and commuting to daycare.
If I was the one with the short commute (and didn't need to worry about getting the little guy to daycare), I would just bike. However, I often need to be mobile for my job and travel to other sites. |

| Yeah, the thought has crossed my mind. I can't decide whether to keep it or trade for a 2010 or 11 V8 Camaro or 2009 G8 GXP. :D |

Man, that's a hell of a decision. I've seen the photo's and the concept of the Camaro in person, but I'll see how I feel about it's final looks after it's out. I love the new G8 GT and can't wait to see the GXP. The beauty of the Ls* series is that you can get some pretty damn good mileage on the freeway with the taller gearing. Driving a Corolla and Pilot as my only vehicles, I'm going through some major "fun car" withdrawals. |

I sold my 2003 Pilot in favor of a 2008 Camry Hybrid. Enjoying the 40 MPG average, a bit better than double the 19 I was getting with the Pilot. Only regret was not selling the Pilot sooner, at a better price. With gas inching toward $5/gal, the resale of any large vehicle is going to become ever more depressed. |

| i thought about trading mine in for a hybrid or diesel vehicle, but decided not to. i need and enjoy my pilot's utility. i carry upwards of 5 passengers quite often. no hybrid vehicle in its class can carry more cargo than the pilot. in addition, i wouldn't want to start over on a new loan. |

Don't feel bad, I sold my '07 Camry to get '06 Honda Pilot LX (base).
About the same price not counting DMV fees and Tax though.
I guess I'll be driving it for a while, it's too hard to sell now. I guess I'm stuck with it.
Next time, I'm getting an Acura ;) |

I'm not the person to give away safety for gas saving.
I don't feel it's a good trade-off to risk the likelihood of a major injury with a small car to save a few dollars on gas.
My wife got injury in an accident and it's with a MDX. If it was a car, I couldn't even thing how bad the accident would have been. The fireman said lucky she was in a mid-sized SUV and it held up well.
Don't risk safety for a few dollars. It's not worth it. |
