Timing Belt Change Quote. What do you think? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Got a quote on changing the timing belt on our 03 pilot. 112K on it currently. This is from a local automotive/tire shop which I have had good luck with and they seem very competent.

Anyway, to replace the belt and tensioners they quoted $620

I told them I would want a new water pump also and he guessed that would run another $200.

So, all in all, $820

I figured I could get all the parts myself for around $200-$250. That extra $550 or so for the labor and part markup seem like a good deal considering the time it may take me to do it.

Any thoughts?

Sounds fair but get a dealer quote also and compare.

Sounds fair to me, but I would never entrust it to someone if this is there first time doing this repair on this engine. I'd get some dealer quotes too and see if they're competitive.

When it comes to more specialized and complex maintenance like this, I prefer the dealer, just because they have done it a lot more times. The procedure covers an easy 25 pages in the shop manual and is very technical.

That is about what I paid ar a dealer.

Sounds high to me.

Get Tim (our site sponsor Hondacuraworld) to quote you the parts, and ask a dealer what the charge would be to install. It should not be more than 4 hours. You should also ask the garage you use now if they have ever changed a Pilot timing belt. You will also need 2 gallons of antifreeze when you change out the pump.

Funniest thing I got the parts from Tim (which were 1/2 the price of what is up here) and the Honda dealer was more expensive for the install only than the Acura dealer. Go figure!

Good luck.

Check the local dealer's websites for service coupons and/or search the web for "honda timing belt service coupon" to find the going rate.

For example, here are two dealers, one charging $750 and the other $800:

Here's one that doesn't charge for the belt - only (an unspecified amount) for labor:

Ok, my local dealer said the cost of the timing belt package is $930.66. The timing belt, water pump, drive belts, oil seals are replaced, this is parts tax and labor.

Still reasonable? Its about $100 more than the original place I posted about. I'm willing to drop $100 more to the dealer. I'm going to try and find a coupon to.

I just took my pilot in for the "timing belt package"- all belts, water pump, coolant ect. and it was $650 all together after a $100 off coupon I got in the mail. This was at my local Honda dealer in Stockton, CA.

That sounds more reasonable.
