Question about Maintenance Reminder and VTM-4 fluid service. - Click HERE for Original Thread
MyFirstHonda
I own a 2006 EX-L with roughly 35000Miles. I have been following the maintenance reminder since day one and I have yet to see a Maintenance Sub-Symbol 6, which is to replace VTM-4 rear differential fluid.

I am due for my 3rd B1 service with 15% oil life left. Since this will be my last routine maintenance before the 3 year warranty expire. Should I get the VTM-4 service done anyway?

I absolutely think you should have the VTM-4 fluid replaced (assuming you have the all-wheel drive model). I have a 2007 pilot and that code appeared at my 2nd oil change reminder (about 14,000 miles). I believe the manual for the earlier years recommended that it be changed at 15,000 miles.

After reading a lot of posting about VTM-4 rear differential fluid services, I should have seen the Sub-Symbol 6 by now, based on my mileages (35K).

I am currently on my original VTM-4 from the factory, is it something that I should be able to feel it during normal driving if there is something wrong with VTM-4 or differential fluid?

i'm not sure if you would feel or notice anything if the fluid needed to be changed, but with the mileage you have, i think it definitely should have been changed at least once by now. mine was replaced at around 15k. what are your driving habits? do you tow or drive off-road, or require AWD often? if so, you really need to get the VTM-4 fluid changed.
MyFirstHonda
I do not tow or drive off-road, since I live in Canada it does snow in winter month, which means AWD does engage quite often.

I guess I will ask the dealer to change the VTM-4 fluid in next services.

I do have a question though, since the Maintenance reminder hasn’t told me to changes it, what if it tells me to change it on following routine maintenance. Is it smart enough to know that I just changed it recently?

On my 06, the VTM "6" came up on the second service around 10.5K. Others have reported this also. I'd change it. Is it possible you (or the dealer) missed it?

These systems are entirely algorithm-based and have no sensors that detect the fluid properties themselves. If the reminder pops up soon, I'd just assume you changed it a bit early and wait for the next. If it occurs later, then I'd change it again and get "back on schedule". It's a good idea to follow these things, but you don't need to do it slavishly.
