Cruise Control Agressiveness - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've wondered if there's a way to change the Pilot's cruise control settings.

The Pilot seems to downshift at the slightest rise in the road - which can't be good for gas mileage.

Now I know that maintaining speed gets the best gas mileage but downshifting from 5th to 3rd at 65 MPH just to crest a very minor grade seems like overkill. I would not mind the speed dropping 2-3 MPH to avoid this. Does anyone know how this can be done?

I seem to get better MPG using my foot, not the cruise.

Why do you think it is downshifting in to 3rd?

It is probably just the torque converter unlocking.

My '04 does the same thing :(

I really like the smoothness of the engine/tranny combo on the Pilot, but the transmission software IS funky...

Even going up an overpass, the torque converter will unlock and rpms will jump up about 500 rpms. For instance, at 72 mph, I'm at 2000 rpms at highway speed. When I approach a slight incline, the engine jumps up to about 2500 rpms until I level back out.

IIRC, 4th gear would be closer to 3100 rpms at that speed, and 3rd would be howling at about 4100 rpms. V-tec kicks in at 4200 rpms. Do you see your Pilot kicking up to 4000 rpms when in cruise?

The cruise control is another disappointment in an otherwise great vehicle.

Not sure, but it will downshift when just going over an overpass bridge. Other cars I'm in using cruise just go up and over without downshift.

Sure would be nice to be able to adjust it.

Maybe it is doing what's best, and holding the gear is less "optimum"?

Mine does exactly the same thing. I guess we have to learn to live with it.

the cruise control maintains your set speed very aggressively.

i like to think of it as responsive. even with driving without cruise control, honda transmissions are very willing to downshift or unlock the TC. other cars would just continue to struggle in top gear unless my foot was on the floor for 5 seconds, thereby killing any semblance of throttle response at all.
