What is it that causes the Pilot to automatically decelerate so much after you let off the gas? At times it seems like a drastic slow down and other times it is gradual. Is it the VCM? I did ask my dealer and he pretty much said that is just how Honda's are made. Is there another name for it?
Its taking some getting used to. I'm sure this is probably posted somewhere, but I couldnt find it. Thanks! |

Thanks! I didnt notice it when I did my test drives for some reason. It is definitely taking some getting used to. If nothing else, I guess it will save the brakes a bit. |

In my experience in owning mostly American and European cars, I've noticed that, for the most part, American cars seem to "roll" more freely when you let off the accelerator, where European cars tend to decelerate when lifting off the accelerator. Nothing scientific here -- just what I've noticed over the years. The Pilot seems to be more in line with the European style.
I agree that it does take an adjustment to go from one style to the other. For example, for the first several months after purchasing my Ford Taurus, I found myself riding the brakes in traffic trying to keep the car slowed down!
For my personal preference, I like the "engine braking" of the deceleration when lifting off the accelerator. I feel like it gives me more control over the car. Plus, it just feels tighter and more precise to me.
I've always assumed that the difference was due to different gearing and engine tuning, and perhaps due to the higher compression ratio used in many European engines. But this is all speculation -- I'm in marketing, not engineering, so I really have no idea. If anyone has insight into what causes this, I'd love to know. |

| Maybe mine has never worked properly (or maybe yours doesn't), but the grade logic hardly ever engages for me. Basically the only time it does is when I take my foot off the gas while going downhill. It rarely, if ever, happens on level grade. If every time you take your foot off the accelerator, the transmission immediately downshifts and the RPM increases, there might be a problem. |

It work on my 04, maybe to well( excessive jarring).I believe honda did modify it for 2005 and up. |

| The deceleration I am referring to is not related to downshifting, so I doubt grade logic control is a contributing factor. The gearing of the transmission could certainly affect it, though. |

That's where I notice it as well (lifting off the gas while going down a slight grade), it kinda catches me by surprise sometimes.
There's one particular downgrade near an off ramp where it really gets you. It's a slight down hill with a light at the bottom and as soon as you take your foot off the gas to coast it downshifts and really slows you down.
That's the only time I ever notice it kicking in, it may do it at other times and I just don't feel it as I'm going faster or already braking?? |

That's exactly how "Grade"-logic is supposed to work and exactly my experience, too. |

.....interesting. There is a steep bridge I travel over every day and if I take my foot off the accelerator when going down my pilot will drop to about 1000rpm and my speed will increase 3 to 5 mph. However if I touch the brakes during the decent the transmission will automatically downshift......isn't that the way "grade logic" is supposed to work? |

That's exactly how mine works. I just don't find myself on steep hills very often. |

| Mine activates pretty much all the time. Even on level roads. If i'm approaching a stop and take my foot off the accelerator, it downshifts. Then if I coast a few seconds, I can feel the auto braking disengage and it actually picks up a little speed. Like another poster said, it actually jars me alot of the time. I have also noticed it is not quite as bad with the A/C off. So anyone think it may be a problem? I have about 600 mi on it now. Think I should take it in and have it looked at? |

My 06 accord does this exact thing on a particular downhill near my house every time. Drives me crazy. I have not noticed it with the 09 pilot yet, we will see. Glad to know i am not the only one "enjoying" this technology. |
