I'm a new '06 Pilot owner, and I'm now suffering from the vibration problem.
I've done some extensive searching and found the following possible solutions.
1: Tire balance and rotate: Doesn't work for all.
2: Alignment: Doesn't work for all.
3: Add MDX brace kit: Some say it helps.
4: Counter balance fix? Saw this on an '03 pilot thread, but since it's not mentioned much after that I'm guessing it didn't do the trick.
Is the vibration problem a product defect, or something that can really be "fixed"? If the car is still under warranty, will Honda try to address?

For sure have an alignment done, and have them pay extra attention to front wheel cross camber--less than 0.4 degrees if possible.
Also, for stubborn wheel/steering wheel vibrations, Honda recommended in 2005 that Odys be set to the toe IN limit (2 mm I think) of the alignment spec. Have heard it has solved similar issues with other vehicles.
Something to do with varying tolerances and age of suspension components that allow the wheels to begin toe out under load and speed and road condition, causing an oscillation to start. |

The problem seems to have diminished as the threads on it have not poped to the top of the list lately.
Is yours 2WD or 4WD?
There was also some who thought it was related to the rotors and/or brakes. As far as I know, the problem was never "solved", it just faded away. It will be interesting to see what happens to this thread. |

yeah, as I have posted before, a lot of final solutions never get posted. And without them, the thread is just reduced to unproven speculations--the bane of many forums.
I can imagine people get busy, or they get used to the issue and live with it. I've discovered that a polite "ping" can get some of them to provide a useful update. |

| Had the vibration with my '03 and 70mph seemed to be the speed where I felt it most. I had the dealership look at it and they couldn't find anything wrong and it did seem to get better over time. I will tell you that I suspected the OEM tires from the beginning and changed them at 25k miles. Brand new tires and problem was resolved. |

I have the 2WD model. The shake is related to.
1: Speed, the faster the worst. The main shake occurs near 60, mild, can get pretty bad at 80 or above.
2: Road condition. Pilot seems to be sensitive to the surface, even if the road is smooth, but has grooves lets say it will do more vibration than not.
I haven't been to motivated to go in and have something done about it, but I'd like to know I'm actually doing the right thing to correct it. I'm also near the end of my warranty, so if it was something related to warranty that could be done for free or more cheaply, I'd like to get it taken care of before the 36k mark.
I'm also concerned that the shake attributes to other car noise showing up. I noticed the passenger seat shakes as well as the steering wheel. It may be related to why I'm getting the slight shudder noise in the driver side door.

| I'm at 138K miles already and have never had the 70mph vibration. maybe because I cruise at 75 or 85?:) |

I had this as well and noticed it more in the 45 - 55 mph range. Again, once I swapped the OEM tires for the Goodyear Fortera's this disappeared. |

What you describe sounds a whole lot like the tires and/or wheel balance. Honda's project road feel, not a bad thing, and when the tires or suspension isn't just about dead on you quickly take notice. (This vs many cars with ultrasoft setups that mask the same conditions.) The real action takes place at the contact of tire to ground and that's where I start when diagnosing this stuff.
- Check the tire tread for clues of bad wear (cupping, sides worn down, etc). If you find abnormal wear, get an alignment )...At the least, go get the tires balanced. You can get them "load balanced" which works well I'm told. The machines are pricey so not all shops have them.
- Rotate the tires; See if this changes the vibration significantly one way or another. Any effect and again the tires are suspect as well as alignment.
- Alignment (have them provide a printout of settings before and after adjustment)
I would also be leaning heavily toward a new set of better tires vs the OEM's. If you go that route, get the alignment as mentioned and watch the wear carefully in case there is a suspension failure of some sort. And on tires, go to tirerack.com as well as the tire and wheel section here for background on what is working best.
I have had perfectly good "looking" tires be out of round and make a car shudder at over 50. Have also seen tires that looked great but the inferior construction provided a quickly degrading ride in few miles. Domestic cars used to be notorious about inferior OEM tires. Now it appears all makes have it as an issue. Can you tell I am pointing at your tires first?
Good luck and let us know!;) |
