The check engine light came on in my 04 Pilot and I did not notice any thing wrong with the car, but I took it to the dealership asap just to be safe. I was expecting something minor but was very surprised to get a call that I need a new transmission. The code that came up was p0740. I am at about 74K and have a dealer installed tow package with the transmission cooler. Is there some kind of service that can be done on this or is it just straight to the new Transmission at about $3700?
Any help would be appreciated. I have been very happy with the dealership but I am just looking for a 2nd opinion since I don't have the cash to part with at this point. |

You are not feeling any transmission slippage? |

| I noticed a klunk when I put it in to gear the other day, but I was parked on a hill so I just thought that was it. It still drives fine. |

He probably wouldn't feel slippage if it is the torque converter clutch. I think this is related to the lock on the torque converter, not to clutches on the transmission gears. More of a cruising issue than a shifting issue, probably. |

| "I think this is related to the lock on the torque converter, not to clutches on the transmission gears. More of a cruising issue than a shifting issue" so what should I do? Do I take it to a transmission shop and have them work on it and not the dealership? |

Well, we are obviously just guessing. Sometimes a code doesn't have anything to do with what is actually wrong.
It seems to me that this dealer has done a poor job in bridging the gap for you, as to why an error code leads them to conclude that a transmission replacement is necessary. Sure wouldn't make any sense to me!!
I would ask them the following questions:
* What analysis did they do beyond just scanning the error code? Did they find other things wrong, like unusual noises, computer readings, or something in the transmission fluid? Did they find that a specific component failed and what was it?
* Why does the entire transmission have to be replaced instead of replacing the broken part?
* Did they confirm that there was no electrical or computer issue that could be causing the code?
* Why did the car seem to be working "fine"?
* What happens if they replace the transmission and the light comes back on?
* Will Honda help cover the cost, since it is only a few thousand miles over the powertrain warranty (assuming you can show you followed the maintenance schedule)?
It may be worthwhile to get a second opinion, but I would probably do this at another Honda dealer, not a transmission "shop" IMO. |

| :) I just got a call from the service manager who has been working on this one since yesterday with Honda. He got Honda to cover the transmission if I will cover the labor! I guess that is a good deal since I am out of warranty and will get a new transmission from the dealership for about a grand. Thanks for your replies. Youbetcha your post was very helpful, thanks for taking the time. You should have some good karma coming your way! |

This arrangement would certainly make me feel more comfortable. It seems they are making a good-faith effort here to step up to the plate, given it is post-warranty.
If you do get more details on what happened to the transmission, please post so others can search. |

| For my future use, do you tow; did you change the fluid on schedule; anything that I should avoid? THanks! |

| My pilot will make a clunk sound sometimes after selecting reverse. I hope that isn't cause for alarm. |
