So I have what I think will be an interesting question/challenge for folks. I have installed a Westin Light bar, with PIAA fog lights on my 2007 Pilot. While the OEM fog lights do very well at illuminating out to the side of the road, I sometimes find myself wishing for more light out front. This is particularly true when driving out on rural country roads on very dark stormy winter nights here in the Pacific Northwest.
So, here is the challenge…In Washington (I assume it is probably true in most other, if not all states) you are only allowed to have 4 lights shining forwards. So, I would like to do a rather elaborate installation on this. I would like for the primary on/off control of the fog lights to remain with the switch on the turn signal stalk. I would like to have a toggle (A/B selector) type switch to switch between the OEM and PIAA lights. I don’t want my wife to worry about accidently having all 6 lights on and getting stopped by the police (and blinding oncoming traffic with all that light)
The PIAA lights come with a very nice install kit that includes a relay, the on/off switch, plus a lead that is meant to tie into the vehicle’s wiring system. The purpose of this lead is to coordinate the function of the PIAA lights with the function of the headlights.
Does anybody have any thoughts on how I might go about doing this? I do not have any wiring diagrams for the Pilot, and my electrical expertise is from a manufacturing perspective. I worked in electronics assembly, so I know how to solder, and how to crimp connectors on wires, and a basic understanding of wiring schematics. I can follow directions, but don’t know how to create/design.
Hopefully someone can offer something up that will not only help me, but help others who may want to do the same thing. If this comes together, I can take pictures and post an “illustrated guide” on how to do this. |

I don't know if this might help you or not, but i too have a pair of PIAA's and the Oem fog lights. and they both have their own switch on/off. As you know it and the can be turned on and off endependently or both at the same time.
My swhitch of my piaas have a green light that tells me when they are on.

Geez, I guess I kinda posted my own post...I posted this and then got incredibly busy, things have just settled back down for me.
The PIAA kit looks really good, and is complete, I was just hoping for more of an "automatic" lighting system. I turn the fog lights on, and then select either OEM or PIAA. So, I was hoping to have it so I could NOT have them both on at the same time...
I think I am going to abandon that, and go with a standard installation. I do not have the time or resources to figure it out, and winter is coming fast.
If I may ask where you went through the firewall.
Also, there is the wire that "tells" the PIAA system when the low beams are on. Where did you hook that up? Did you tie in to the headlight system somehow or did you go to an ACC line? |
