If you're planning on towing that kind of weight, then I'd recommend installing the towing package (tranny and ps coolers).
There are tons of threads here discussing this topic. Here's a link to most of them...

As far as DIY instructions, quite a few members have done the coolers installation themselves. Here is a link to a thread where they are discussing it. It doesn't have step-by-step instructions, but you could probably contact any of the members who have done it and ask questions.

Hey! Welcome to hp.org.
I tow a lot with my '04... a 2400 lb boat/trailer and a pop up camper that weighs about 1500 lbs according to the local CAT scale.
Definitely put on the tranny cooler and the ps cooler. I've also read here that the OEM hitch is beefier than most others out there. I installed mine by myself about 3 years ago and the hitch is attached to the uni-body 'frame' by 12 bolts total.
Some aftermarket hitches use as few as 6 bolts  , 3 down each side.
Pay attention to tranny hunt, i.e. constant hunting between gears, and drop down to D3 if you have the problem. That effectively locks the tranny in 3rd gear, preventing excessive heat... which could eventually cause fluid overheating, then tranny death!! |

| Make sure the transmission recall was performed as well. The 2003s had an additional oil jet added if they passed the look see test |
