Hey just wanted to let you guys know not to waiste your time trying to install a hi/lo converter to your OEM readio in the 09 Pilot.. At least not the one with Nav/RES....
I spent ALL day yesterday trying different channels so i could hook up a sub without losing my interior speakers so Basically tapping into the lines.
Everytime I hooked up the hi/lo to a speaker line I would lose that speaker even though it was still connected...
I think it's the way the speakers were wired since it is a 10 speaker system. The front door speaker and the tweets on the dash were together, the center was separate..
The rear doors were separate, then on another harness, theres the center channel, the surround speakers in the rear and the sub. I tried tapping into every single channel and nothing worked. :3:
Maybe i'll take it to the shop to have a JL Audio Clean Sweep installed. I miss my bass..... |

| As Forrest Gump once said "I'm not a smart man". What is a hi/lo? |

You have to use a hi/lo converter if you keep the OEM (stock) radio and want to add an aftermarket amplifier and subs or speakers IF the OEM radio doesn't have RCA Jacks for an amp.
It converts the high frequencies from the speaker wires to the amps via RCA jacks..
A hi/lo has speaker wires on one end and RCA inputs on the other. |

| If we could finally get the Hi/Lo converter to work could we install a kicker amp and still use the subwoffer provided with the pilot? Is this worth it, or we are looking at a blown sub soon? |

Okay if you add an Aftermarket amp ie Kicker amp DO NOT use the OEM sub, get and Aftermarket sub, it won't even be worth your time to install a Kicker amp and use the OEM sub. I will be installing a JL Audio 500/1 Amp and 1 or 2 JL Audio 12w3v3 how may subs depends on the box, but I have to get the hi/lo to work first.
ALL the OEM speakers would work on top of the aftermarket amp and sub that you will have connected. The aftermarket amp will not power the OEM speakers so you will not have to worry about blowing them since they will still use the OEM amp.
I will have to play with this again to try and get the hi/lo connected. I finally found the OEM amp. When I tried to install the hi/lo I tried to install it AFTER the OEM amp behind the radio.
NOW I have to try to connect the hi/lo BEFORE the OEM amp which is located on the passenger side kick panel under the glove box to the right. You will see a Silver amp with 2 wire harnessed plugged into it.
When I play with it and if I get it working I will take pictures and post it, I have been extremely busy so I don't have time to play with the car.

I'm just throwing this idea out there. I don't know if it will work.
Your JL amp already has the capability of natively accepting a high level signal through its RCA inputs. When the Input Voltage setting is set to "High", it can accept an input signal of 800mv to 8v. So let's see if we can take advatange of this.
Forget about the hi/lo converter for now (since it's becoming clear it's not going to work anyway). Reconnect all of your speakers back to their factory default connections.
This is where we get a little adventurous. You'll need an RCA connector from Radio Shack or wherever. Disconnect the speaker wire at the subwoofer end, cut off and strip the ends and connect the + wire to the center prong of the RCA connector, and connect the - wire to the outer part of the same RCA connector (or maybe vice versa, I'm not certain about the polarity). Either way, polarity is not a big deal right now since we're just testing. Plug the RCA connector into one of the inputs on your 500/1 amp, and set the "Input Voltage" setting to "High" and turn the Input Sensitivity all the way down. Fire up your stereo, starting at volume level 0 and slowly work your way up and see what happens.
Good luck.

Hello 05EXL, just curious if you ever came up with a fix for your issue. |

Sorry guys I have given up on this one.... The only thing I can think of now is to get a 5 channel amp and separate the fronts/rears/center channels... Leave the OEM sub disconnected and add a Momo block amp and sub(s). BUT this will require an Aftermarket headunitand I will lose my RES...
SO I am stuck with the OEM system..... |

05EXL-
Just to clarify what you found: you mentioned disconnecting the factory sub, and installing a separate amp/subwoofer. I am looking at doing the same thing.
Did you say there was a problem using the subwoofer inputs to feed the speaker level input of your amp? I am not looking to re-route any of the door speakers, just add a larger sub in the back. Thanks. |

Yes I tried to install a hi/lo converter before and after the Factory amp to try and source the amp but it didn't work... After the amp which was behind the radio cut off the speakers that were tapped and Before the amp worked, but there was very little power going to the amp so the factory sub and amp sounded better.
I did not try to use the line going to the sub to source the amp but I do not think it will work. |

Call crutchfield.com and see what the advisor says... they seems to be very knowledgeable on car audio. |
