FYI - Side Step Installation - Click HERE for Original Thread
BSG
Just thought I would let everyone in on a little annoyance with the 09 Pilot side step installation. One of the 6 holes in the underbody on each side of the vehicle is not threaded and requires installation of a rivet nut. I have installed countless sets of step bars etc on vehicles and it has always been a 15 minute bolt up deal. Well, with the 09 pilot with the honda step bars at least, that is not the case unless you happen to own a rivet nut tool which I certainly do not, and I imagine most other people do not either. And I don't mean a pop rivet gun like everyone has, I mean a pretty specialized rivet nut tool that I could find very little info on the net about. So, today I am paying a honda dealership $135 to install something that should take 15 minutes. :3: I probably could have bought the tool for less than that, but I would never use it again. So I figured if I had to spend money to get them installed one way or the other that I may as well pay honda to do it so the bars will be linked to my factory warranty.

Some places allow you to rent the tool. Here is a site that does:

I think there are more out there.

Good Luck

I ran into same problem, went to dealer, they wanted around $100 for a tool, and it would take 5 days to get it in.. I did a little search on internet and found this: homemade rivnut tool.. worked like a charm....

http://fjr1300.info/howto/rivnut-tool.html

Took a few minutes to figure out, but once you get it going, it was simple..... I kept the pieces, because looking at other exterior accessories, they too need this tool..

What type of running boards did you purchase/install? I'm debating between the black side steps and the LED accented side steps.

Please post a picture once installed :)

I noticed that a rivet tool was required only after reading the installation pdf files for the running boards.

You can also loan the tool half way down the page here.

I have the premium running boards.. I do not have picture, but at any of the web sites that sell accessories a picture is included....

I assumed the tool would be sent, did not read directions carefully, thought is was similar to an allen wrench type tool...

Thanks for your input. The black side steps I was referring to is molded the same way as your chrome side steps. I assumed that these side steps would better complement the "boxy/utilitarian" shape of the Pilot which is why I want to see an all around picture of it installed on the vehicle.

The chrome side steps would probably complement the chrome wheels as opposed to the more silver polished rims.

I too noticed that watermarks appear on the chrome emblem and rear chrome trim after rain. I use adams polish detailer spray which works well to remove water spots. Likewise, any type of detail spray will produce satisfactory results.

Hmm...I think they look great. I didn't notice the contour mismatch and the chrome matches/blends really well with the chrome strip in the body side molding on my touring model. Once it finally stops raining here I am going to clean 'er up and take some pictures.

I ordered the basic black bars as well think they woul dbe the most rugged looking. The rivnut tool thing is swell know to Ridgeline owners. Check their forums, there are many posts on a homemade tool. It's needed for the lower aluminum trim as well.
