Anyone installed cross bars? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking about hauling a set of kayaks on top of my new 2009 Pilot. To do that you need to buy a set of cross bars and they come with some J-braces to hold the kayaks. The setup is pretty standard so that's not a big deal. Honda dealerships sell them as accessories and you can get them anywhere they sell Thule equipment.

But I wanted to see if anyone has installed cross bars because on some vehicles the bars create significant noise. Sometimes it's just a wind movement noise and on other vehicles it's a howling noise.

I'd rather not go out and buy all this equipment to find out it's so loud that it's no fun to use them.

Thanks for any help,

Dennis

I installed the cross bar couple weeks ago and I did not notice any significant noise other than normal wind noise. Just make sure you install the cross bar the correct way, there is a label for LH and RH.

Does LH mean the front crossbar and RH mean the back crossbar?

I looked at the Honda instructions and didn't see these labeled this way:

LH means driver side and RH means passenger side. I do have a hard time to install the safety screws. It only takes me 30 minutes to complete the install. Get some one to help to to slide the first cross bar to the front, it is a pain in the rear to do it by myself. constantly walk back and forth to both side to slide the cross bar up front.

For a bit more money, you can get crossbars and mounting hardware from Yakima or Thule. Both systems enable you to easily remove the crossbars when you don't need them. Starting tomorrow, REI has 15% off Thule items.

On each crossbar, the leading edge is blunter than the trailing edge and the plastic inlay is closer to the leading edge.

Also, the dual width-adjustment screws that are underneath go on the passenger side of the vehicle.

There isn't anything that can't be fixed by duct tape, a pair of vice grips or a loud audio system.

Anyone have problems with stripped mounting brackets?
The bolt screws into a metal bracket that is insered into the side rails. My metal brackets with threaded hole (to accept mounting bolt) is stripped. Seems the metal threads are very soft metal, so any misalignment upon attempting to screw in the bolt strips the metal bracket threads.
How to fix?
