Value of certified 2005? - Click HERE for Original Thread
qposner
Hello all. New guy here! I have been looking at 2005 Pilot EX-L's. I can pick one up from a small dealer that buys at auction for around $16.5k with DVD, sunroof and around 40k miles (no warranty). However, my wife really likes a certified one at a Honda dealer that we could pick up for a quoted $20.6k. It has 23k miles, dvd, sunroof. Only difference is it is a better color, has less miles and the certified warranty. However, I don't know if the certification is worth an extra $4,000. The 17k less miles certianly has a value though.

When I run a values quesry on Edminds, KBB, etc the values come out higher than many asking prices so I do not feel they accurately reflect current SUV values in this market. Can anyone give me any input on what the certified might actually be worth? We are thinking about buying later today so any help is appreciated! Thanks!

MHO - i've always gone CPO over a private sale anytime i've looked for a used car. from my experience, we've had more problems with non-CPO cars, even with clean carfax's. in fact, there has only been one car i've purchased privately that was as reliable as my CPO's, and that was a 1988 CRX. i'd say go certified, its worth the peace of mind, since pilot repairs can be VERY expensive. i'm pretty sure you can also bargain with the dealership so you pay less than their quoted $20.6k.

Thanks. I figure I can go lower. I am going to shoot for $19k. I just don't want to end up paying $20.5k when it is only worth $19.5k in this bad SUV market (the only reason I want to buy one right now is to land a screaming deal. While Pilot are not as cheap as a comparable Explorer, etc right now, I still want to steal one (but who doesn't?)!

BTW---The ask price is $23.9k.

IIRC, if it is a Honda Certified vehicle, it will come with a one year 12,000 mile warranty.

Why not consider buying Honda's extended warranty with the non CPO vehicle?

Just got a certified 05 EX-L w/o RES (Red) w/ 48K miles for $15K. Since it was certified, I also got 2.9% financing for 60 mos. Dealer was initially asking $22K. It had been on his lot since late May, so he was motivated to move it. I think the 2.9% financing expires on 9/1.

Amburgs,

You helped me out. I did not know about the 2.9% and had 4.9% secured. The dealer wanted $19.8k and I was stuck at $19k. I refused to budge and left. My wife REALLY let me have it since she wanted the Pilot and I told her we agreed on a payment. When I got back I saw your post. When I ran the 2.9%, I could come up a bit. So, we went back and settled at $19.5k with the 2.9%.

Thanks to everyone for the help. My wife is no longer mad at me! :-)

Thanks rlapid. I look forward to learning from you guys. Now we need cross bars, floor mats, headphones (dvd) and a tow assembly (lease return did not have these). I will visit sponsor sites.

Is this small dealership you have been looking at called PG Motors by chance?

We couldn't pass up an 05 LX with 31k and Certified for 1499.00 with the .9 financing (new battery, new rear shocks, new headliner, new tires, 30k service). With wrap warranty at dealer cost.

Dealer cost on the Certified Wrap Warranty: $765. Retails for upwards of $1200. This provides 7year/100K comprehensive coverage in addition to the powertrain warranty. This warranty can be bought only at the time of vehicle purchase.

Recent promotion of .9 percent interest for 36 months is a good offer as well. That yields about 1.5k in interest savings for those financing a total package.

Sounds like a great deal. What year and package did you get? Thanks.

NYR,

PG Motors had the less expensive ones we looked at. Not bad. However, we bought at Gresham Honda.

qposner,

PG is where I bought my '05 last month. Flew down from Spokane on a Saturday and drove it back that afternoon. It was in even better condition than I could have imagined. Absolutely in superb condition. Was a lease return from Kirkland. Anywho, congrats on your purchase.

No, we bought ours on July 12th. We got the sagebrush pearl with 44k on it. The Havasu blue was the one you were looking at right? Just so happened it was a lease repo from Kirkland. Had all the maintenance records in the book when I got home to look in it. We did add an Alpine RES. My wife trusted me to get what she wanted and then I had to go to Trader Joe's and get her some wine. LOL! Anyway, you got a great deal as well. I couldn't be happier being a Honda owner again.

That was it. It hadn't even been detaile when we saw it. Still had the owner's expired driver's license in the center console.
