Any interest in starting a group buy for the day/night mirror?

New to the .org and not sure how to start one?

Welcome, KMPi'lot!!! To answer your first question: for me, no, I don't need the day/night mirror. To answer your second question: you just did!!! Congrats!!

Sure, I'd be interested. :1:

Current price is $195.00 -- get six more folks to sign up and Tim will knock 10% off that price with FREE shipping (there is a flat $2 handling fee)....

Does anyone know how hard it is to install the day/night mirror? How long does it take? Do you have to run any additional wires or is there a connection point already in the overhead somehwere?

You do have to run cables from the lower left fuse box up the pillar and across the headliner. MDXlite and others have installed it themselves.

Here are the instructions.

There were some people interested in a group buy in this thread, but I don't think they had enough people. You might want to PM or e-mail the interested parties and get their attention back to the group buy.

Did my this 3/30. Took around 1.5 hours, including a couple of interruptions from the kids and breaks. Directions are clear, and didn't bugger up any of the snap-on trimp pieces too bad; the garnish around the visor is the only 'victim', and that damage is slight. Couple of moderatly tricky things:

- Popping off the side of dash trim - a little less than intuitive.
- visor base trim doesn't pop off the most obvious way.
- The plastic clip for the footwell trim can use a regular screwdriver.
- Getting cable ties up behind the headliner is easier if you have small hands, or are good at working blind.
- Getting the 10 pin connector clip apart to insert the green wire is a bit funky; be carefull not to break the connector .

Got the mirror at Mag Auto (http://www.trademotion.com/partloca...subcategoryid= )

for $177 plus shipping (don't have mirror breakout, as I got running boards on same purchase).

I really would like to get in the group buy, but it'd mean that I'd have to install it, which is the part that's scaring me. I've never installed anything at all on car. I don't even know how to do an oil change even if I had the right equipment.

Have you had experience in electronics or parts installations on cars prior to installing this mirror?

These are the parts that scare me. I have about a 50-50 ratio on removing interior trim pieces. Any tips for how you got the parts off without breaking any?

I've had considerable prior experience on various cars, doing all sorts of things up to and including pulling and rebuilding engines, but this was the first time I've taken apart the Pilot. FWIW, I've also installed the running boards, cargo cover, and the rear mud flaps (much easier if you pop the wheel off). Still on my agenda are the tow package and perhaps the CD changer, as funds permit.

Mostly, it was a matter of following the directions and paying attention to the diagrams on how the clips were arranged. For example, the door bottom trim around the fuel filler door has 2 clips, and the easiest way to pop it is to slip a small screwdriver at the rear and disengage the tab; after that, it comes right up. The side piece comes off fairly easily once you disengage the clip at the bottom of the piece. The wiring harness comes apart fairly easily once you figure out how to release the top of the retainer.

Again, the job isn't that hard if you can read and follow directions and take your time. A good sense of visualization is helpful too.

However, if you feel intimidated, or haven't even done simple stuff like oil changes, it may be better to farm the work out. I don't have a flat rate manual available, but I doubt the job rates more than an hour. So, if you have a mechanic you trust, bring the mirror and instructions, and he should be able to get the work done fairly quickly. Really, this kind of an install is 'gravy work' for a tech; quite easy if you're the least bit competent.

Installed mine back in Feb. and I had a few problem.

First, it didn't work after the installation then I returned it and got a new one. I realized later as I remembered that it was my two years old boy took it out of the box and threw that mirror at me and landed on the floor but nothing broke.

After the second installation, the SRS came on permanently. The only thing I remembered I did wrong was that I forgot to disconnect the battery first before I connecting the wire harnesses. Took it to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty. The receipt indicates that the problem was a buckled wire. I don't see how any wire could be buckled since I didn't wire tied any of other wire beside the mirror wiring harness.

Installation process was easy but now I am having problem with vibration when I turn up the music. Does anybody know any fix to the mirror vibration? Would it help if I could line around the clip area with neoprene?

Well, that'll do it. The electronics in the mirror aren't exactly shockproof.

This was probobly when you put in the green wire into the 10 pin connector. It's easy to dislodge existing wires, and if you're not real careful with the harness, you can bend a pin on the fusebox. Could also be the wire on the 10 pin connector came 'unseated' and didn't pop back into place when you installed the clip back on.

Just how loud DO you play the stereo? Is it the OEM or "enhanced"? I've 'cranked it up' a bit (can't stand sound level anywhere over 4 bars on the loudness) and never seen any vibration.

Still recovering from the loss of hearing due to all clubbing during teenage. :D That's only when family is not riding with me of course. I changed all the speakers to Infinity Kappa except the subwoofer.

No, not necessarily... it just needs some more exposure -- if you're interested in this Group Buy, why don't you bump it every few days??? :17: Members don't log on every day and when they do, this thread could get buried in the pile with the other new posts and never be seen... :(

What exactly does it do that flipping the position on the standard mirror doesn't? I've never seen an "auto" day/night mirror. I know it has a compass which is nice but not for the price.

I'm probably not interested because
1. the price is a little steep
2. I don't know how difficult the installation is.

Otherwise I would've opted for it when I bought,

I've had cars with and without, and it's definately a 'nice to have'. The major difference is that it's dynamic; it'll dim when there are lights, and stay 'normal' otherwise. Not that you can't flip back and forth manually, but, like the automatic A/C, it's a little comfort and one less think to distract from the task of driving...

I am in for this group buy if we have enough people. If not, I will get the mirror on my own.

It looks like all group buys have stopped right now. Check out this thread.

How much should I reasonably expect a dealer to charge to install the day/night mirror?
wwong
I would estimate that the dealer will charge about $200 ot $300 labor only to install the mirror. Your best bet is to buy on-line and install it yourself. Other members have posted pictures on how to install the mirror yourself.

I'm inclined, but not mechanically. I'd never try it myself, because then it would cost 3 times as much, after paying someone to fix what I busted. :25:

I just checked the installation instructions for the mirror. Man, you've got to remove a lot of stuff. That's enough to scare me away.

I put the mirror in my wife's Pilot last weekend. Took a couple hours - the hardest part was figuring out which plug was the ten-pin connector in the fuse panel. Dismantling the front of the vehicle was pretty straight forward and went back together quickly. Just be patient, read the instructions, and proceed slowly...
