Has anybody had any success with getting two dog crates in the back of the Pilot? I was so excited about the 29 inches between wheel well to wheel well but after laying down the third row of seats, the second row pushes my crate into the lip of the truck. I need to either find a realitic custom crate designer or a crate in the mass market which will work.
Does anyone have any idea? I need as close as I can get to 36 in Lx 24 in W x 28 in H. There are two alnt front crates on the market but they do not slant enough for the 28 in H.
HELP!!!! |

Could you skip setting up the crates altogether? You could get a cargo tray to cover the floor and use mesh netting to keep the hounds from tearing around the Pilot. Also, I saw a pop-up canine tent (the kind made with those springy poles that are hard to get back in the bag) at one of the aftermarket online dealers. Actually, I just found it, and it sounds like something to consider. Here's the link http://weathertech.com/store/vehsea...opt_choice_id=0
You could take your crates broken down until you got to your destination.
Hope this helps. I always loved traveling with my dog! |

I probably shouldn't bring this up,and this isn't what you asked, but have you considered sedating the dogs a bit so you could put the crates on the roof, and set up on arrival?
We have traveled with our dog pets since I was a kid 40+ years ago in the pre-interstate no AC days. Some of the trips were really nightmares for my parents-3 young carsick kids,2 young ,fairly wild dogs spending 3 days( 1958-Philly to New Orleans) in a POS 1957 Ford Stationwagon,no AC,no cruise,am radio.
.Dog sedatives work great for long,or short trips, especially if you have a very active, curious dog. Most of them also have antiemetic properties,so the dog is much less likely to barf. They actually make the trip safer for doggy, since he-she isn't constantly on his feet ,being thrown this way and that .If the dose is correct, they curl up and sleep for hours on end. They will wake up when stimulated, and they can be walked, just be careful when they hop into and out of the car, since they won't be quite as agile as usual(hold the leash and be ready to give a helping hand around the waist-chest.
The crates;if they just have to enclose the dog enroute, you could fairly easily make-or have someone make-a crude kennel to size.Use a roll of fencing from Home depot(the stuff with 2x4" openings or whatever, not chicken wire, the stiff stuff.,not chain link,of course). You can easily bend this fencing into the 4 sides of the 6 sided cage you need..It stays fairly rigid when used in the short length you will use. For the back and door.Just cut a piece to fit both ends and attach it with fence ties,or with rope(bend any sharp points under)..If you plan to carry the dog in it,just cut a 1/4" piece of plywood to size for a floor.Drill a couple of holes in it,and tie it to the wire
We have an old cat who just loves to go outside, but he is nearly blind etc.I made a 10X3 foot fully enclosed run for him ,so he can safely go in the backyard( he eat grass, sleep, glare at the birds etc)-works great, and it is mobile.
The fencing is pretty stiff when bent into a box.If all else fails, give it a try.Since this cage won't be exposed to weather, you could just use light rope to sew the edge of side one,to the edge of side 4(and to attach the back, and make a swinging door(use rope to attach it on just one of 4 sides.Tie it shut with string when doggy is inserted..
It will be one big piece, start with 8 feet if you want it to be 2x2 feet, and make 3 bends at 2 foot intervals(don't cut it).I usually stand on it and bend a few inches at a time.Make the bends about right angle,of course.
Well,I have run on,it is much easier than it sounds-crude,cheap,but it works.Good luck,Charlie |

Have you considered a kennel versus a crate? I'm at work now so cannot measure mine, but it is one of the folding type, and although fairly large, I know I could fit two of them in the back (side by side) with only the third row seat laid down. |

klowry,
I measured my kennel this morning and it is 32"L x 22"W x 23"H. Perhaps this may be an option for you as 2 of these will sit side-by-side with the 3rd row seats laid down.

OK to respond accordingly and ask a few more questions.
My interest in dog crates for the Pilot is not because my dog is unruly, quite the opposite, we are a competitive obedience team, always going to shows and practice's. The need for the crates wouldn't be to keep him from tearing anything up or the need to sedate him, but rather to confine him to the crate in case of a hard stop or fast turn, so not to throw him about, as well as for his comfort. He actually prefers the crate and his cushy crate pads to the back seat which is leather and not lumpy :)
As for the sedatives, I doubt that he would preform well sedated :) Not to mention the specific sedative mentioned is deadly to certain breeds of dogs, mine is one of those.
As for the WeatherTech Tent, does anyone have one, I would like to know if a dog is actually able to lay down in it and if so, is it curled up only? 29 x 29 doesn't't seem long enough for a dog to lay down long ways, otherwise it sounds potential!!! :)
As for the kennel, please, what is the manufacturer so that I can research it... It seems the longest possibility out there, so I would like to measure and look into it more.
Thanks for all the suggestions, what a great resourceful group! I knew it couldn't hurt to ask.. |

Our use is for their comfort and safety too!! We have 3 Shih Tzu's and the kennel works great!
We bought our kennel at Wal-Mart. I forgot to look at the brand this morning when I was taking the measurements. It is made of high-impact plastic and sort of a beige color. It folds flat for storage. Our dogs also sleep in it at night. Works great!! |

Cool Thanks, I needed to make a Wal-Mart run anyway for a thermus (sp?) for the pup anyway.. I will check their kennels out. I wonder if they will mind me taking two outside to see if two can fit in the Pilot.. I will keep you posted on the outcome.
Thanks again |

Seems like they had 2 or 3 sizes of the plastic folding type and the one we got was the largest. Another neat thing is that the (metal)door can be opened either way. |
