Is it my imagination or is the honda-pilot.org web site really sluggish right now? It's almost as if the server is spitting out the bytes through a pokey 33.6K dial-up modem...!!!

If it's your imagination, it's mine, too. In addition to moving slowly (and occasionally freezing), it frequently gives me the "Connection refused" page. It's getting to be a pain.

Hmmm... that's TWO yes votes for a sluggish site in Maryland -- is there a correlation? Is everyone else getting decent download speeds? It's gotta be the site because when I surf to other sites, things seem normal. Maybe admin is performing server maintenance??? Ooofah...

Zippy surfing from NorCal.

OK over here on the left coast.

Looking like it may be an EAST COAST thing....or maybe even Middle Atlantic. Or maybe even a GERMANTOWN MD thing!

Kemosabe: What have we two Kemotowners done to deserve this?
kemosabe
Okay, with TheWorm and Twinkie confirming that everything is A-Ok in the Pacific time zone, then there must be something goofed up with a router here in the Eastern time zone... :3:

Ziploc: Maybe it's a Fredneck thing... I mean, you're still at work in Fredneck, right? And I'm at school right now in Fredneck, too, just up the street from where you are!! Hmmm... the plot thickens... :(

Very astute of you, kemosabe. The plot DOES thicken.

I'm now at home--escaped a bit earlier than normal--but I've been dogged by these problems mostly at work. In fact, the last couple of days have been a pain with the site while in Fredneck. So far tonite, I'm not experiencing the same problems at home.

It's working fine here in the beautiful downtown Loveland!!! But then, the air is thinner when you are a "Mile High"!!

Painfully slow here in Silicon Valley. Takes forever to load a forum page!

Perhaps the Honda ad appearing in the header is doing something funky to our browsers?
TheWorm
Still flawlessly speedy here in the SF East Bay. 28ms pings and quick pageloads.

Steven242: Wow, you've been a member since June 2002 and this is your first post??? Glad to have you contributing, but wish it were under better circumstances!!! Daggone thing is still acting sluggish!!! Can't wait to get home to Kemotown...

I don't think it's the ads -- they've been there for a couple of weeks now and I haven't noticed sluggishness until today here in Fredneck, MD...

I can see I have to keep my eyes open or I'll get blamed for everything. :2:

It's going to be tough thought. I'm working on a critical project with a tight timeline and when I get home which is well after 5 lately I'm really tired so don't expect to see me around as much as normal for a while.

Hmmm.... what other things I've been blamed for and haven't seen. Global warming, polution, or worse "the starting problem"

Kemo,

Where the # jump is huge, is the location of the problem. 3rd hop at GW3.DCA1.ALTER.NET is the culprit. If it were the site, the big number would first appear farther down, at one of those HE.NET addresses.

One thing to note is that the site is hosted in the SF Bay Area (Fremont, it appears from that tracert), so none of us out here are (or should be, anyway) going through that east coast router.
klowry
I can sympethize with Kemo, while at work in Dc today, I was getting connection refused several times and was getting real slow refreshes. I will run a tracert tomorrow morning and post it if it is still sluggish.

At home I am in Dulles VA and just ran one and there doesn't seem to be a problem with 20ms so we will see, mine probably has something to with with all those damn firewalls I have to go through at work :(

If you point your browser to www.dslreports.com, then click on "Our Tools", then click on "Speed Tests", you can find out your broadband upload and download speeds. I just ran a test and got:

2003-04-26 18: 32: 46 EST: 1529 / 215
Your download speed : 1529757 bps, or 1529 kbps.
A 186.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 215866 bps, or 215 kbps.

Why the large difference between upload and download? Mine were fairly even:

2003-04-26 19:03:09 EST: 220 / 216
Your download speed : 220340 bps, or 220 kbps.
A 26.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 216684 bps, or 216 kbps.

Your download speed ROCKS!!!

Are you using a cable modem or DSL? Mine numbers are uneven because my cable provider, Comcast, advertises:

UPLOAD: 1500kbps
DOWNLOAD: 256kpbs

So when I got 1529 in the test, I was actually doing a little better than what Comcast advertises. Who is your provider?

In this case, the statement YMMV really is true... :(

I use DSL - and I don't remember what they advertise. Just seem odd they would be so uneven, but then I guess a fast download is a real selling point!

I guess they (Comcast) figures you download a heck of a lot more than you upload..... You might wanna dig out your DSL paperwork and see what they're advertising... I mean, my downloads are pretty fast (at home, not in Fredneck...) -- does Loveland offer cable modem service to your neighborhood?

Didn't you say in a PM that we thought alike??? Scary... because before I switched to Comcast, I had Erols (aka RCN aka Starpower) for the longest time!!! I hated pokey dial-up with a 56K modem, so I am more than willing to pay extra for the broadband!!!!!!!!! :4: :17:

Are you renting yours from Comcast or did you buy yours?

Yeah, we were also with Erols for quite a long time before it transmuted to Starpower. And, I agree, broadband is worth the money...beyond question!

I see from the cable bill we're renting the modem at $3.00 monthly. Don't know if that's the wisest move financially.........
kemosabe
Comcast was going to charge me $5/month. I bought one for $100 and got a $30 rebate from Motorola. So I paid $70 out of pocket -- I figure I need to keep it for 14 months to break even: PIECE OF CAKE!!! :)

Pretty nifty--I knew you'd have worked out the most economical solution! Maybe we should look into this.

We're also renting an HDTV converter, but I think it's only a buck a month. That one, I'm not sweating.......

So true, colorider, so true!!! Believe it or not, my upload speed used to be 128kbps, until like last month when Comcast up'ed it 256kbps (double). Their new slogan was "We've up'ed our standards... up yours!" :D :p

They have another package that is better than the 1500kbps -- I think it's 3000kbps but you're paying $90 per month... don't need that much speed!!!
