Do you work out? - Click HERE for Original Thread
Alexandra242628
I came accross this forum and noticed there haven't been any posts! So, any exercise people out there, or is everyone sitting on their butt driving Pilots? If so, what is your age/routine? I have recently discovered I can no longer get away with what I used to without working out. So now I spend 3 nights a week walking 1.1 miles and 2 nights a week riding the bike 3 miles. I just started so I can't really tell if it is making much of a difference but it is better than doing nothing!
ramirami
I try to go to the Gym 2 times a week over lunch.....its one floor down form my office.

I typically run (or some other cardio) for 35 min and weights for 10 min....
Jiaronnis
Everyday, 1 hour each day of cardio/muscle development excercises.
Then the gym after work 3X/week for weights.
sagepearl
well since the birth of my second son, I haven't had much time to get to the gym like I used to. But, I will be getting back soon. I usually play racquetball for about an hour or so, and on the other days I lift and ride the bike. I also, play slow pitch softball (but not much exercise except 12 oz curls after the game).:2: :2: :2:
I golf too when I get a chance which is not often. ( i find that golf takes up too much time now)

26 and fairly active. Play in soccer and softball leagues throughout the year. Mountain bike 1-2 per week (10-15 miles each ride) from April to November. Finally set up the old weight bench at home and lift every other day for 20 minutes.

Trying to compensate for sitting on my ass at work for 8+ hours. :3:

Damn, I need an outdoor job!!
borg
I have just been maintaining the last 7 years, I work out Monday to Friday and take the weekends off, I alternate days between cardio and weights. When I'm not working out I still get a lot of exercise chasing after my two boys ....

Not as much as I used to (sound familiar?)!!! I walk about 1 1/2 miles daily and try to ride my bike a couple times a week. How old? Old enough to know if I don't exercise more, I will turn into a blob before I know it!!! I'm not the oldest one here - but probably in the top 5.

74PILOTMOM
I'm a former cross country runner. I would easily run 13 miles a day. These were highschool days I'm talking about. I wanted so desperately to get UP to 100 pounds. Now I wish I could go back in time and slap myself for wishing weight gain upon myself. 11 years and 40 pounds later, I'm doing nothing and ashamed of myself.
I need to work a regular jogging routine into my day somehow with 3 kids under 7.
Quitting my part-time job was a good start, frees up my evenings. I need to run (or walk) the pregnancy weight gain off of me. It doesn't just fall off like it used to, thats for sure. Hard to get motivated in nasty rainy weather. Swimsuit season is coming though...   Better get off my Butt! Treadmill purchase time I'm sure one would fit in my Pilot. No excuses left!
Alexandra242628
No excuses PilotMom! I just had my second kid last year and this time the weight did not just roll off either. Now the 5 year old rides his bike and I push my daughter around in the stroller. I have made it a habit. Right after dinner we are off to the races!
catbert
I go to the gym at lunch four days a week.

After the first child was born, I lost all of the pregnancy weight in 6 weeks. I was thrilled! This time, my baby is 10 months old and I have barely lost any weight. I'm about 40 pounds from my target weight right now. Very depressing...
PaulV7
23, I rock climb. I try to get to the local indoor gym and climb 2 times a week. If I'm lucky I get outside every weekend. Now with the longer days a couple guys and I are going to try to hit up some local outdoor areas after work. I do it more for fun than exercise but it does get you in good shape.

I'm right up there witth ya colorider! I'm 51. Older Than Dirt used to be the oldest - think I was second oldest. But OTD is MIA right now (pleeeze come back) so that MAY make me the oldest - currently. Please - anybody - post here to make my day & let me know you're older than I am. Really just kiddin' - I love this 50 era!
As far as exercise...
Treadmill 30 minutes per day. Walk/run/incline. Then jump in the pool - Do 10 full laps - not racing - just constant swimming at the pace I feel at the time. I walk my 2 pups every other night just around the neighborhood but it's at a good clip - they love it and wanna go-go-go! :D
I play soccer (or the sport of choice at the time - I stink at all of 'em) on the weekends with 2 of my 3 grandkids (they think I'm 31 ;) ).
That about covers it - lookin' into getting another bike but because I can't go very far right now I'll probably wait.

Bike to work - 10 miles 4-5 times a week, 45 minute spin class 2-3 times a week, weight/fitness training 2-3 times a week. Seven pounds to go to target weight by my 45th birthday. I'm more fit now than ever.
david combs
I'm 60 and retired. I Do cardio (cross trainer, treadmill, or stationary bike) at least 5 days a week for 45-60 minutes. I also lift on 3 of my workout days. Also have recently gotten into distance biking on the weekends. I used to be a running addict, but I guess old age and 25,000 plus miles have taken their toll.

I messed up and didn't include the under 20 crowd...there's a teenager that actually owns a Pilot surfing here once in a while. It seems most of us are in our 30's. I'm still surprised by how many of us "babies" are here. I'm 28...but not for long.

The question is do you work out? Of the 31 responses only 14 really address this question. The last 14 or 15 seem to be private conversations that are totally unrelated to this thread. The same thing seems to happen on threads relating to legitimate pilot owner concerns. It seems that a few people monopolize this site and use it for their entertainment center. I suppose that is okay, but I think it drives many many people away who are seriously trying to get information about problems/concerns they may have with their pilot.

I'm retired. I should have some idle time. How about most of you? Aren't your jobs challenging enough to keep you busy during working hours. I can hardly wait to see how far adrift this goes. And yes you are right. This subject is not the topic of this thread.
Alexandra242628
Make that 14 out of 32...you didn't answer the questions either.

Besides, this is in the health and fitness section, not the Pilot Problems area. I was just trying to start a non-car related conversation. I just joined the site a few months ago and love the fact that there are friendly "relationships" on here. I think all of the Pilot questions/comments are addressed when they are posted...you can only talk about the Pilot for so long without drifting into other areas like kids, jobs, etc.
a2Pilot
I have Tae Kwon Do twice a week, plus the required stretching and practice as much as I can between classes.:D

Well said Alexandra BUT he did answer the questions in his first post. And actually David Combs, Alexandra's post in HER thread asks us to give our AGE. We did that as did you. If fact... when my reply started talking about being in the top 5 oldest members you David Combs jumped right in to tell us you were 60! WE then started discussing who may be the oldest so actually you were right in their with us. We even gave you top honors!
Where's the threaddrift besides YOUR post.
Maybe we should consider maturity level in the equation!
I usually ignore such ignorant posts as this one but this was totally unnecessary. If you wanted to vent about threaddrift and non-Pilot discussion's you could have started your own thread. Not insulted us in our friendly non-Pilot conversation. It's Alexander's thread, she can discuss what she wants and chose the appropriate forum to do so.
You couldn't wait to see the replies, well here ya go!

Oh but I did 2 days ago. See quote above. You missed my point. This thread is about health and fitness not who is the oldest. I'm also interested in many subjects, but just one at a time. Your right, Pilot issues are addressed but along with 50 unrelated issues on the same thread. Personally I find it a waste of time weeding through comedy central on a thread that is related to a serious issue. There is a time and place for both.
Alexandra242628
Oops, I forgot you posted. It was way above the rest and this thread has gotten long. I understand your point about the "drifting," but I think you are getting a bit too worked up about it. Thread drifting happens everywhere.

All right another TKD person!!!!! :2:
My daughter and I are going up for our black belts in August, so we have been going 5 to 6 times per week  for the last year and a half or so. As far working out I do the TKD thing 5 to 6 days and I try to work out 3 times besides. Plus I try to bike to work during the summer as much as possible. On top of all that I try to pick up as many pints of Guinness as humanly possible for increased arm strength.:D

I mountain bike 2 times a week and hit the gym at least once or twice for a spin class. I try and do some weights, if I can't I do push ups or something. I also do 90 sit ups a day. Most of the time I watch what I eat...........but sometimes I don't!

Triathlon training. Cardio 5 days/wk and strength for 45 min 3x/wk.
Softball on Monday nights and riding bikes/swimming with kids the rest of time....Oh and did I mention housework?

I should be doing much more.....Right now I keep steady by doing step aerobics and light weights 3-4 times a week for an hour, and on weekends I like to run, anywhere from 3-5 miles. Since summer is here though, I 'm going to dust off the rollerblades and hit the waterfront!....Now if I could only stop being such a chowhound ;) (Thai food is a huuuuuuuge downfall of mine).

Oh yeah! Work-out Mon, Wed, Fri for total of 6 hours. Walk 4-1/4 mi/ day. Lost 31 pounds since Feb 1. Am feeling/looking good! For my age that is. I'm 62 and trying to hangon (retired). Taking my Pilot (and wife) on a grand tour of the west June 16 for about 5 or 6 weeks. Will get some hiking in I'm sure. Really enjoying my Pilot. It's our first SUV and it's a real eye-opener. Glad I waited for the Honda.

I'm 46, and have had a weight management problem all my life. Right now I'm on the downhill side, and hope to keep it that way. I quit smoking when I was 35, and walked 1235 miles that year. The year I turned 40, I did more than 1600 miles.

Now I try to do an hour in the gym every day. 30-45 minutes on the treadmill, 15-20 lifting, then 10 in the steamroom. I've lost 20 pounds in the last 6 weeks, with only xx to go!

I started the weight training again about 3 weeks ago, and my weight loss has slowed somewhat, but the waistline is decreasing fast enough. A pound a week is my target. And most importantly, I've already dropped my blood pressure back into the normal range, and my resting heart rate into the below 70 bpm range.

Keep it going Jay. I lost 30 pounds a few years ago after deciding I needed to track how many calories I was taking in. I just figured that the best way to loose wait is the old fashion way - just don't eat! Even though I worked out regularly and communted on a bike, I needed to reduce intake to loose the gut. As we get older I think there is now way to avoid it. I still don't consider myself to be on a diet, never did. I just cut back at lunch and tried to not over do it during the week. On the weekend I still pretty much ate what I wanted. So, while I think everyone needs to figure out what works for them, If you have not done so maybe recording what you eat for a week on one of the many calorie trackers will help you manage the process to go even further. By the way, keep lifting too, I found that keeping the muscles sore meant wait loss because calories were going to keeping muscles going and not to fat. Good luck.
Alexandra242628
I didn't know this thread was still going. Well I have to amend my response. The walking wasn't doing enought and it is too freakin hot here in south florida. So the man and I joined the gym. I know go 4-5 days a week and do at least 20 minutes of cario on the machines and then do a weight routine. Much better, and much cooler.

Almost. I am a natural body builder (that is, I stay away from the 'roids). I do OK (50 inch chest, 34 inch waist, 17 inch arms) without the "juice". Compared to my friends who do it, I maintain my size longer, though I am less defined. I am in the weight room five days a week, at least an hour per session:

Tuesday-Chest
Wednesday-Back and Trapezoids
Friday- Shoulders
Saturday-Biceps and Triceps
Sunday-Legs

Cardio is done on an elliptical machine 4-5 times per week at home for about 30-45 mins per session.

My workouts are done at night after I get home from work. I am a VP in a major German Bank in NYC and I also hold an MBA with a concentration in Finance that has significantly aided my career.

I look like a smaller version of Goldberg (the wrestler) with a shaved head, goatee, and football player physique. I get a kick out of the other bankers who meet me for the first time and are taken aback a bit by my appearance.

Okay, I'm updating this and bumping it for newbies...

Has anyone ever seen Winsor Pilates? HOLY COW! It WORKS!
No jumping around like a fool, but there are some embarrassing balacing on your butt moves, however. I used the regular 20 minute workout. I tried it for just 9 days, and lost 3 inches off of my waist.

Not kidding.

It's fun and relaxing to do, and you don't think you've done much, until you whip out that tape measure a week later.

I highly recommend it to all of you that aren't proud of your middle, or just recently had a baby. Go for it, you'll be impressed!
robrecht
OK, robrecht is joining this thread for a little positive reinforcement. My wife (!) signed me up for a new gym with a nice pool because I used to swim competitively in HS. I've been having a little bit of success with a diet but now I'm going to get serious.

When I get home, I'll read through everyone elses posts so we can encourage each other.

Good luck!

Yes, my old gym had one of these but it did not work well. As a former competitive swimmer, even being completely out of shape, I swam much faster than the highest setting on the endlesss pool.
porknbeans
I'm 36 and I work out 3 times a week. Ideally it is 45 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weights. Lately, due to work I've cut back on the cardio to 20. I was told to start exercising because my good cholesterol was a little low and exercise is supposed to improve it (as well as that whole weight thing too). Although I haven't lost any weight in the last year, I have dropped 5 inches off of my waist and my wife likes it (that's the cool part). Good luck to all that exercise. It is hard to stick with, but well worth the time.
74PILOTMOM
Isn't it amazing what those inches do for ya? I don't even own a scale, the measurements say it all.
Way to go, porknbeans! 5 inches is incredible. Take that tape measure and let it out 5 inches and see what you looked like, take it in 1 and see what you'll look like soon.

Motivating:29: :claphead: Hearing your success story. We all can be each others battle of the bulge support group.
We'll have to rename you "Reduced fat beans" "Leanbeans"

I need to update my original post...walking wasn't cutting it so we joined the gym. I go 3-4 days per week and do 25 minutes of cardio then alternate between chest/back, legs, arms, shoulders, etc. Much better and they have babysitting which means the whole family goes together.
porknbeans
Thank you so much for your comments. It has been nice to see, but I'm still, uumm... plenty round. I'm about 20lbs above where I would like to be, but I'm comfortable where I'm at. :D

I just found this thread and added it to my list. Now I'll be able to follow along with everybody else and their progress/frustrations.

Do I work out?? :21: Gosh that's funny....
porknbeans
If I took my family to the gym they would probably disown me. I'm at the gym by 5:45 am!!

I used to follow the advice of one of my friends:

I don't lift weithts unless someone is sitting on me and I don't run unless I'm being chased.

Then my doctor got involved....:D

I keep telling my wife that I'm in shape... Round is a shape!!! :p
guitarman
I go to the gym every other day. One day is chest, triceps, shoulders. The other day is back, biceps, legs, abs. I spend about 40 minutes working out, with little rest between exercises. I do two exercises per body part. One warm-up set (8-10 reps), one fairly heavy set (6-7 reps), and one heavy set to failure.

Chest: bench press
Cybex incline press
Triceps: pushdowns
dips
Shoulders: military press
dumbells
Back: cable rows
Cybex pulldown
Biceps: standing barbell curls
standing dumbell curls or preacher curls
Legs: squats
calf raises
Abs: crunches

Any advice???????/

Yeah, stop making the rest of look bad. Play more guitar! BTW, what kind of guitar do you play? I do a little bit of classical but mostly just folk or old fashioned fun stuff like "Silvery Moon" kind of stuff. I play around a little bit with banjo and mandolin but literally just play around. We've turned our living room into the "music parlor" so that we will get more use out of it.

Oh, I just love thread drift!!!

Anyway, read through the whole thread and now I'm motivated more--in fact I went to the gym tonight! After all, I too want to be governor of California one day!

rob,

The Endless Pool company claims that their highest setting is equivalent to swimming a mile in 20 minutes. If my math is correct, that's about a 37-38 sec a lap (25 meter pool) pace - which is a little too fast for me (being way way way out of competitive shape) for an entire mile. I agree that their fastest pace is way too slow for speed workouts.

Is a 20 minute mile slow for you (wow) or does the pool not live up to its advertising (bummer)?

I'm pretty sure it's not the former! It may be that because the pool is relatively small there isn't much of a margin of error and at the start of a swim I start out fast, at a pace that I surely couldn't maintain for a whole mile. I suppose I could try to start out slower. But part of the fun of competitive swimming is being challenged to maintain an unrealistic pace as long as you can. Maybe one of the good things about swimming is that you can hit the wall (figuratively, of course) rather quickly. Maybe I was just too impatient?

Just try it out yourself before buying one--it would be hard to sell at a garage sale with all of the exercise bikes.

Art doesn't even know a guy named Jim (gym)!

Arrrggghhh... the doctor just told me that my cholesterol level is a little high. :bangh::bangh::bangh: I need to reduce the LDL and raise the HDL and he recommended exercise !!!

Looks like my answer is going to have to change from "Does washing the Pilot count ??" to "Reluctantly" *sigh*
porknbeans
Man does that sound familiar. That is exactly what got me motivated to start. I'm going to be going in for blood work in a couple of weeks to see how much things have improved.
PaulV7
yolk you might look into the Atkins diet. My dad went on that and dramatically changed his cholesterol. Plus he has also lost about 60 pounds in the last year. My dad said it's the first time in his life a doctor ever told him his cholesterol is actually "good".

If you like meat, eggs and can give up breads and pasta it may be a good diet to look at. I would recommend you buy Atkins book before you start it. His book really breaks down why the diet works and what it does to your body. I flipped through it and it really makes since. Add some exercise into it and it just helps that much more.

I use to think the Atkins diet was just another gimmick diet until my dad tried it. Now a days he is still on it but not as strict about it like he use to be. He will eat ice cream or bread once in awhile just not every night.

Pretty much everyone in my office went on it about the same time my dad did. They all saw some sort of success from it. My dad really wanted to lose weight so he was by far the most strict about what he was eating.

Personally for me I could never do that diet. I don't eat meat but maybe a couple times a week and I love bread. My wife jokes that if I ever ended up in jail I would be happy as can be getting bread and water for every meal.

just a personal experience I had that may help :)

I can just picture you, PaulV7, in jail after your meal of bread & water and then being some other inmate's love slave for the rest of the night... :13: :creeplook

PaulV7, if you ever get the chance take a bread tasting trip to Belgium! Aside from water, you may want to try a few beers there also. The beer may take a little getting used to, but you're bound to find some you like out of the 400 or so beers brewed in Belgium. If you don't want to try all 400, I can give you a few recommendations.

I don't think the Atkins diet had much success in Belgium!
yolk
Thanks PaulV7 for the suggestion. Just hit the gym last night and boy was I out of shape. I'll check out Atkins - I do like meat but am a little concerned about the high protein nature.

Good luck with the blood work porknbeans.

I was doing Adkins in 1978, way before I even knew who he was, and lost quite a bit of weight just limiting my carbs.

I've been doing my version of Adkins since June 24, and have dropped 33 pounds so far. I hit the gym every day for some lifting (alternating upper and lower body) and 30-45 minutes on the treadmill.

The biggest thing was eliminating the "12 ounce curls" from my weight training.:2:

borg
Free membership @ borg's home gym

Yeah even Kemosabe & Art are welcome to stop in anytime even if it's only for workout #6 :7:

Seriously though, I'm glad to see this thread going strong. I've lived the fitness lifestyle for a lot of years & have been a member of numerous gyms. Ten years ago my wife & I decided to invest in a home gym & we haven't looked back. The key is to have the right equipment & the room, then sit back & relax because when it's time for your workout it's a short walk down to the basement. :29:
borg
Equipment:
Vectra online unversal gym, Alliance treadmill, Tectrix personal climber, dumbells & rack & exercise mat.

borg: That's a really nice setup you've got there!!! Art and I will be over this weekend -- we'll sit on the floor with beers in hand and watch you pump iron!!! :D

kemosabe ===>:6: :15: <=== borg

Now we know how borg got his "Yield" sign shape... :22:

P.S. That really is borg!!! :4: :17:
kemosabe
Before kids, I used to work out at a health club... Paid like $31/month -- then I cancelled my membership a few years ago...

...it just goes to show you that if you put them off long enuff, the price will (sometimes) eventually drop!!!

Bally wants me back for $8/month now!!! :p
guitarman
Looks like you've got no excuse now Kemosabe. Can't pass up that deal. Wow. Even if you only go once a week, it's worth the investment.

guitarman: Nah, I'm waiting until the monthly fee drops to $5/month... :p

In all seriousness, I do have plans to build a home gym (similar to the one in borg's basement) in my basement within the next few years... :4: :) :17:
