Posting Etiquette - Click HERE for Original Thread
jay
I didn't see this mentioned in the site f.a.q.'s, but have seen it in other places. Posting in ALL CAPS is hard to read, considered to be a written form of shouting, and should be avoided unless the poster indeed INTENDED TO SHOUT!

I know some sites deteriorate into p*$$ing contests over this stuff, and wouldn't want to see that happen here.

Any other posting etiquette we should be reminded of?
TheWorm
Good topic :)

Posting in the correct forum (as did you) helps keep the site tidy and organized.

Cross-posting (duplicate posts in >1 forum) is bad form (and we will delete duplicates)

Using the search feature to find existing threads/topics and posting in those threads generally is preferable to starting a new one on the same subject.

Differing points-of-view are fine, but personal attacks on other members are not. (this rule does not apply to attacking trolls for sport).

I agree on the ALL CAPS. Extraordinarily difficult to read. OK for "shouting" or if you're like me and too lazy to bold stuff you want to emphasize, but otherwise please don't. Similarly, PARAGRAPHS are your friend.
Ziploc
I don't know if this is "etiquette," strictly speaking, but I really do appreciate reading posts that have been proofread/corrected so that the message is clear on first reading.

Note: Most HP.org members are pretty good about this--not so on some other boards I've joined.

I think quoting is important if you are specifically responding to another comment. In the case of this message I'm presenting a new idea so there is no need but if my post was...

"I agree!!"

There are several posts above this one that I could be agreeing to. I have seen times when a response could answer 2 or 3 questions in the thread above it. This is obviously confusing.

Only talk bad about others behind their back.

Only kemo is allowed to post nudie pictures. (Cuz he's a moderator)

Your color Pilot is the best, all others suck (can I say that).

I was under the impression that Don/Brenda was contributing new stuff for the list, rather than replying to a specific post. Therefore, quoting anything wouldn't make sense -- it was a new idea and not a reply to any single prior post in particular.

Well, since the title of the thread was "Posting Etiquette" and that is exactly what we were all talking about, why would you NOT have any idea what Don was talking about?

You can often take any single post out of it's respective thread and yes, you would probably have a difficult time sorting it out. But if you are following the "converstaion" it generally is not a problem.

Ya think?

I agree.

I think it is also good to "snip" a long quote and leave only the relevant statements for your response. It's a pain to scroll through the loooong quotes trying to figure out what the responder is referring too. Not to mention the wasted screen space sometimes.

Of course you do want to leave a prefix and/or suffix to indicate a snipped quote. I like use the "..." method and others use the "[snipped]" indicator.

I agree with that and I agree the fact that if you are responding to the message right above the reply you don't need to reply. In general I tend to quote more of the message the farther away I get from the original. If I am reviving a two month old thread I'll quote the whole thing even if I'm just referencing a small part of it.

Sorry again that I misunderstood dandbtucker's message as a reply to a previous post in this thread rather than new info. I guess that explains why I couldn't figure out which post he was responding to.

One thing I like to do (and it's just my personal preference) is this: when I refer to a honda-pilot.org member's name, e.g., colorider or ramirami, I like to put their name(s) in bold.

Many times, people don't have time to read every post so they may just scan the thread quickly -- I figure if they see their name in bold, it'll catch their attention... :)
TheWorm
that's also a good idea, kemosabe. ;)

It might not be poor etiquette, but when someone submits a post and it all runs together in one paragraph it become difficult for the readers to follow along and they loose interest altogether. If you want other to follow along, divide the post up into smaller paragraphs - typically were the subject changes or the thoughts change. I know I've had to go back and re-read earlier posts because I never made it through the first time without skipping to the end and missed someone's point entirely. This is especially important if you want to make more than one point in your post. Or if you want to respond to more than one person. Did anyone make it this far? If you did, make sure you snip this post before quoting. It may take up more room on the screen, but a nicely organized post is so much easier for the reader. It is also very important if you are the thread originator and you want to get help from others.

I'm not trying to complain, but don't be surprised if someone misses your point entirely or looses interest because it's buried in the middle of a run-on sentence or over sided paragraph.
;)

Speaking of quoting, I definitely prefer the quote to appear above what you're responding to...

...since we read from top down, it just seems more natural (to me, anyway) to read the quote snippet first, followed by the rebuttal or follow-up!!! :4: :) :17:
kemosabe
...as opposed to putting the statements your quoting below your comments -- I think the vast majority of the honda-pilot.org members do it the correct :p ;) way, but there's a small handful that do it this way (personal preference, I reckon).

I occasionally post above a quote, when I feel that my point is more important to the overall flow of the thread and only tangentially relates to a previous post, particularly one that might have been drifting off topic or becoming abusive.

This may have already been mentioned, and maybe not, but this thread was due for a bump. Please, please use the search buttons or links, and spend a little time trying to find the answer to your question before posting a reply or starting a new thread. As a "too active" member on this site, I can tell you there's a 98.7% chance you'll find your answer in less than 15 minutes, and an even money chance you find the answer in less time than it takes to describe your issue and ask a question.:p
BCinTX
quote:

Good thread titles can go a long ways towards helping this too. Threads with titles like "Hey, I have a question" don't give any clue to the content, so when just browsing forums or seeing search hits you have no idea if its worth checking that thread. "Question about roof racks" (for example) is a much better title.

...until you hit thread drift.

I just get a bit frustrated on searches sometimes because I may get a lot of hits on "roof racks" where people just listed their Pilot's options, and I try to tell by the thread title if a thread may help or not.

I also won't usually open generically titled threads to see if its something I can offer help on. I don't know how many people read every thread, but I only open the ones of interest to me.

This was a fictional example and not intended to single out any posters or threads.

Thanks jay!!! It does seem as if we have had a rash of duplicate threads lately. I find, that when I first join a forum, it is best to just stay in the "lurk" :13: mode for a while - until I get a feel for the posting "trend". A good search engine is invaluable - but only if people use it!

:)
seadog
Maybe the suggested use of the search function could be prominently posted on the home page. Also some of the info currently on the home page needs to either be updated or removed and someone should be responsible for doing this routinely. First impressions are important!

Why don't we just post a section that everyone sees on the home page that welcomes new members, as well as old "lurkers, and provides tips into searching and any other things we ask of new members, like pics!:D

I completely agree. A descriptive title will draw more responses and be easier to find for reference at a later date.

You can limit the advanced search to "titles only" to reduce the false hits, but this only helps if the subject is in the title. Threads with titles like "Have you seen this?" or "Question" eventually get lost and duplicated.

Don't write posts like you're sending IMs. You've got many more people reading these posts, take an extra second or two to type in complete words so the rest of us don't have to decipher them. "ur" instead of "your" is an example. This isn't a video game board, many of us weren't raised on AOLIM and don't read that way.

Bump. Posting in multiple forums, such as the same thread in Problems and Accessories, is not necessary. Just post your thread once.

And if you have something to sell, start a single thread in the Classified Forum. Don't post links to your eBay item across multiple threads.

I did not intend my comment to seem like a shot at the moderators. I was just wondering if hondapilot.org had become more popular or something. It just seems like there have been many posts coming in groups of 3 from people. not really a big deal, so long as people on the forum are paying attention and don't click on those links.
