The Official Merrywang (Banjo) Thread! - Click HERE for Original Thread

A music forum--what a great idea! This thread will be dedicated to the banjo (or Merrywang). Let's hear from all you banjo enthusiasts out there!

The Merrywang has such a wonderful cheerful and surprising sound! I just love the banjo but don't play it enough to be really any good at it. I actually have a custom 6-string banjo (which I can play like a guitar) and a cheap 5-string that I play around with every once in a while. I'll post pictures soon.

But in the meantime, you have to check out Strumelia Harmonia's hilarious banjo website. Here's her life story in pictures (A Girl's Story of Musical Corruption, WARNING: Tasteful vintage nudity posted only as a warning of the dangers that can befall merrywangsters!):

http://harmonias.com/page5.htm

Here's her Northeastern Hightone Headknockers chapter of the International Merrywang Society:

BTW, does anyone know where I can get a copy of 1,001 Banjos by Akira Tsumura?

Here we are leaving for our honeymoon, a very long canoe ride to Switzerland! Well, someone had to paddle while I provided the romantic music!

Here's our little Merrywanger at a couple of months, already practicing his rolls, of baby fat that is!

Yer all welcome in our music parlor anytime ye wanna come over to make some tunes!
robrecht
Red banjos make the best music for some reason.
robrecht
Of course it's always nice to have a geetar at the ready!
robrecht
Or a mandolin ...
robrecht
Or even a folk harp ...
robrecht
An' sometimes we just crank up the new fangled music machine in a box ...
robrecht
On a clear night, we can even get the Grand Ole Opry on our new radio!
robrecht
The cows like to come over and listen to that ...
robrecht
And watch the sun set ...
robrecht
And the moon rise ...
robrecht
And the thread drift ...

robrecht: One of your photos is backwards...

...you will see that this image is a mirror image of the displayed "photo" on the end table in this picture!!! :8:

kemosabe, you're amazing!. Yes, our wedding photographer sure knew a whole lot about them new camera thingies but he didn't know a lot 'bout most banjos. He reversed the negative and made me left handed in the photo that my wife framed.

Amazing? Nah... I just enjoy looking at all the photos and pictures that honda-pilot.org members post in the forums -- sometimes oddities like that jump out, other times, whoosh right over my head!!! :p :p :p

Thanks for splaining the difference!!! Keep up the nice images!!! :29:

Great thread. I love the banjo and mandolin. I still use Loggins and Messina's Mother Lode album with the mandolin to test new sound systems!

I have only one regret in life. I was born with cerebral palsy, a birth defect that affected the right side of my body. I've done absolutely everything in life that I wanted to do (with patience, practice, or plain old perseverance), except play a banjo. I don't have the fine motor skills in my right hand to play it, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the music of those who can!:D

Thanks, he's the music in our hearts everyday! We thought it was silly how nobody uses their living rooms anymore so we wanted to make ours into something that would get used, hence our music parlor!

I'd take a drive up to Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island and ask the sales people there. Don't let the name fool you--I'm sure they have more guitars and banjos than mandolins, tons of vintage (and new) instruments worth thousands of dollars. Paul McCartney had his personal assistant fly over from England to hand deliver his fameous lefty Hofner violin bass guitar when it needed a repair. Every time I visit, I feel like I died and went to heaven! Of course, you could also call or email, but then you wouldn't get to visit their truly amazing store!

robrecht, I was on a Wal-Mart run looking for Maisto Pilot's today, and saw a personalized plate that made me think of you. I tried to get an image from the VA DMV website, but that didn't work; it was:

"GOT BNJO"

Thanks for thinking of me, Jay! We were only one state away, visiting my wife's grandmother in West Virginia--just got back last night. Pretty country, didn't get a chance to hear any banjo music though.

I was a day late, but wished robrecht a Happy Birthday yesterday on the MDX board while we were moving to a new server.

Well, here we are on a new server, and it's only appropriate. Happy Belated Birthday, robrecht. Here's to many more! :7:
robrecht
Thanks, Jay!

Weren't you supposed to come over to dinner a while back? I still have some Chateau neuf du Pape ...

Because of the recent upsurge in interest in the mandolin and Banjo, thought I'd post this brief message here 'bout a new song I wrote.

It's called "Recall Them Dandy Tranny Days," and I'd like to dedicate it to all you sad Pilot owners out there.

Recall them dandy tranny days
When all gears worked together as one?
Don't got no slippin' clutch
Nothin' bothern' me much

Everything was just automatic
'Xcept when we needed VTM-4 lock
Recall when a recall was
Only for governors 'n' General Motors?

Then them 10 cars whent an' died
And the jester went and stole his crown
Uh ... Drove my Chevy to the levy
But the levy was dry

... it sorta just trails off from there, but you get the idea.
