So it's winter...... & the start of holiday season, which means there's going to be a lot of time spent indoors & eating all those great holiday meals. There will be a natural tendency to forget about your fitness routines & get lulled into winter hibernation of physical inactivity. Well, I say.....DON"T DO IT! Now is not the time to forget the gym bag @ home so you have an excuse not to work out or say to yourself you're too busy or too tired.
I'm starting this thread to remind everyone(including myself) to keep up with their work outs because we all know how hard it is to get started again if you take a few weeks off during the holiday season.
I would also like to share my favorite exercise that I've found to be effective & hopefully will also give you the desired result.
My tip for today is the bicycle exercise, due to all kinds of “new & improved techniques & ab machines” this particular exercise has been forgotten or ignored which is too bad because it’s probably the most effective ab exercise. It works on the upper, middle, lower & the obliques……it has to be the most complete ab exercise out there & it doesn't require the use of fancy machines & can be done just about any time/anywhere. Give it a try.:29:
Link describing the proper execution & it's benefits. |

Here's my favorite:
It took 3 inches off my waist in 7 days of using it. Since it's about impossible for me to get out of the house for a jog, it's great for stay at home moms and dads: |

I've found the best thing for that 6-pack abs look is dieting. You can do ab exercises until the cows come home, and you'll never see your adominal muscles until you get rid of the abdominal fat. I've seen lots of people with great ab muscles who only rarely do ab exercises. They do have low body fat however.
Great thread. I'm heading out to the gym tonight as a matter of fact. |

| You're absolutely right guitarman, proper nutrition is necessary to obtain maximum results from your workouts. Or one can get a liposuction or even surgically implant a six pack. ;) |

A friend of mine that I met at the gym had liposuction recently. He works out, lifts, rides a bike, and is very muscular, but could never achieve the look he was after. He was in a LOT of pain for several weeks afterward. Had he known then what it would be like, he never would have done it. As it is, the result was really no great improvement, and he resigned himself to the fact that certain body types are the way they are, and the best you can do is proper nutrition and exercise.:( |

| On the other hand, I know someone who had liposuction in the abdominal area, after trying everything else, and is very happy with the result. Wasn't going for the six pack, just getting rid of a lot of flab. |

CLA= conjugated linoleic acid
This is the first supplement that I believe actually does what it claims, it reduces bodyfat & promotes lean muscle development. I've been taking these supplements for the past 3 yrs with no ill effects & along with regular exercise & proper nutrition, I really believe it has helped me in maintaining my weight.
There is a lot of information out there on CLA, I suggest you do your research & consult you physician as I did before trying the supplement.
Also, I enjoy a cup or two of green tea daily which is reported to have properties to enhance your metabolism. :) |

| Borg, have you looked into creatine? It also promotes lean muscle development and strength. |
|

I have used creatine, it increases water retention in the muscle. Good for performance, however once you cycle off the water will work its way out of your system and the "muscle mass" gained will be lost. It looks good while your using it.
Nitrogen Oxide (NO2) is the new thing in supplementation. A bit expensive, but it is supposed to increase blood flow to the muscles to aid in recuperation and increased "pump". I am low carbing it right now, so NO2 is not on my list until I lose eight more pounds. You should not take it while carb intake is below 40% of total caloric intake.
I'm also taking it a bit easier since I developed bicepital tendinitis caused by incline bench pressing 315lbs once a week for six reps over the course of a month. This is a heavy weight and I should have cycled back down to 275lbs, but I got greedy. It is much better and I have been training during the injury to speed recovery. I felt pretty good pressing 225lbs for six last week and I did shoulder presses yesterday on the Hammer Strength machine with three 45lbs on each side for six. Another two to three weeks and I should be 100%.
Anyone taking NO2 presently? If so, what do you think? |

I attended a four day fitness/nutrition workshop 4 yrs ago, @ that time everyone was raving about creatine. The key speaker was not in agrrement then with the popular belief that creatine actually aided in building muscle mass. He said that creatine was basically a protein supplement not unlike the others that have been on the market before it. He also stated that if all you want is to supplement your diet with protein you're better off using powdered skim milk mixed with skim milk, it's way cheaper & it's pure protein without additives. |

| croccan: those are huge numbers.... "incline bench pressing 315lbs once a week for six reps"...wow!!! Are you a competitive body builder or just going after that harbody look? |
|
|
| croccan |
Definitely not competitive...I would need to cut up more for that. I have more of a football player/wrestler physique. I have been weight training since I was 16 (I am now 32) and I worked in a really hard-core, metal and iron, concrete floor gym during my last two years in college (besides the iron and concrete, we had one treadmill and one stationary bike....they were still brand-new when it closed down).
I have seen a lot of bad things that a person can put into their bodies to propel themselves past their genetic potential and have also seen the results of just a few years on that bad stuff. I have kept away from that and opted for the all-natural path. If I had not, I could be much bigger than I am now and would lift much heavier weight than I do now (and would probably have a lot more problems than just tendinitis). Nineteen/twenty year old guys in my gym are lifting some insane poundage and you can tell that they are not doing it naturally, but they live for today not thinking that someday they will be in their 30's or 40's.
I have a genetic make-up that allows me to gain weight easily, unfortunately not all of it is muscle, which is why I am on a low carb diet right now. Brings down the fat to see the definition, but also lowers your strength. I should be on this diet through the new year, then taper off. Lots of Whey Protein, red meat, fish poultry, vegetables and fruit. Once in awhile I will allow myself whole grain bread with natural peanut butter. Every meal has some form of protein and I stay away from white flour, white sugar and white potatoes as a general rule. Once a week, I am set loose to keep sane eating whatever is in my path. Went from 222 lbs to 208 lbs in six weeks. |

| You should have more energy, not less, on the low carb diet. Perhaps you're not eating enough fat. The fat will be used for energy in place of the carbs. That is the cornerstone of the Atkins diet. |
|
|
| croccan |
I do have more energy, but the release of water retained to help digest complex carbs and my lower consumption of these slower burning complex carbs saps my strength. I do consume more water to keep hydrated, but there is a noticeable difference in strength between when I am on the diet and when I am off the diet.
That is why your endurance increases when taking creatine....the water retention aids performance. |

Here's another tip...... ;)
[qoute]Labatt Sterling has 2.5 grams of carbohydrates and 88 calories per 341 ml bottle. According to Labatt, premium domestic beers have between 11 and 17 grams of carbohydrates and 130 to 145 calories per 341 ml bottle, and most light beers contain between 6 to 9 grams of carbohydrates and approximately 110 calories.
"This is our early holiday gift to beer drinkers," says Nigel Miller, director of public affairs for Labatt Breweries of Canada. "We're launching Labatt Sterling to appeal to the growing number of people who are looking for a beer that fits their lifestyle, but who are also looking for something that tastes great and won't compromise their New Year's resolutions."
Labatt Sterling is designed to appeal to consumers following low-carbohydrate programs[/qoute]
I may have to stock up on these in case production ceases after the holiday season.:) |

What I don't understand is why anyone would want "6 pack" abs when you can have the WHOLE KEG ab like mine (please not "ab" singular because it's one big muscle ;) ) |

If the new Labatt Sterling will not be available in your area try Michelob Ultra.:7:
Tried and Tested: Michelob Ultra low-carb beer
Can a low-carb beer taste good? We find out...
It's finally time to raise a glass to low-carbohydrate diets. For years, followers of Atkins and other low-carb regimens have had to steer clear of beer in an effort to maintain their carb minimums. Now Michelob has made enjoying a drink while following a low-carbohydrate diet easier, with its launch of Michelob Ultra, a low-carb, low-calorie beer. A 275-ml bottle contains 2.5 grams of carbohydrates and 88 calories. That's way below comparable bottles of Stella Artois (9.2 grams of carbs, 117 calories), Grolsch (8.4 grams of carbs, 114 calories) and Smirnoff Ice (26 grams of carbs, 177 calories), according to Michelob. |

| For all of you guys/gals purchasing pills and other vitamins. Go to http://www.easypricematch.com/ after you have found the cheapest price online. All you do is tell them the cheapest price you found, and give them the URL and they will beat it by 5%! The only thing bad about them is that it took 3 weeks to get my pills, but it could have been just the pills I got were not in stock or something. Good luck with them and you guys should probably share the best prices you are getting with each other. |
