How long did your Sylvania SilverStar bulb lasted? - Click HERE for Original Thread
desertpilot
A lot of Pilot owners are interested in getting the SilverStars but are reluctant because of some reports of short life. This poll should help potential buyers decide if they want to upgrade to these bulbs.

Note: Please respond if you are using Sylvania SilverStars only. Other brands like Osram, Philips and others are not included in this poll, a new poll should be made for them.

TIA

7 months and counting.... :29:

Mine lasted less than 5 months. When I contacted Sylvania (they sent a prompt reply - great customer service) they said that they do not expect it to last more than 1 year. They said its mentioned in their FAQ section of their website.

They were nice enough to offer replacements free of charge.

Thanks guys for your response.

I have mine for about 3 months so far and it's still OK. I have my fingers crossed and hopefully they'll last at least one year.:p

As soon as there are at least 10 votes, we can have at least an indication on how long these bulbs last.

We should have at least 100 votes to be confident of the results. More than 100 votes are even better.

well would it not depend on usage...if someone does a lot of night time driving their time period will be short IMO

Yes, that's true and it will affect the results if there are only few votes. That's why we need a large number of votes which will cancel out the few people that does a lot of night driving.

As of now with only 10 votes so far, 40% said that their bulb lasted from 3 to 5 months. And 60% said that it lasted 10 months to 1 year or more. This will still change, when we get 100 votes we should get a more reliable results.

I'm been changing these lights all the time...

The first time left light burn after six months they replaced, after 4 more months the right one, after the left one again. I sent the set to syvania, I received back a new set is on for two months, I don't really like the life span of these stars, better go back to conventional
on my last Accord I never change it for three years, (I sold the car)

Hi colousa.

You could still vote in the poll by doing an average of the life of your bulbs. For example, add 6 + 10 + 6 months = 22 months, divided by 3 bulbs. The answer is 7.3 months average life span. You should enter 7 months in the poll. If you already voted with a different number, vote again the correct number and your old vote will be replaced with your new correct vote.

Thanks for your vote and comments.

I like this poll. I'm interested in the results. I've been wanting to get "hid" bulbs to replace the OEM. I did this with my CRV, PIAA 5K, the results were great. Those lasted me for about 3 years, i'm scared to use the philips bulbs, i think i'll go back to the PIAA. I had a friend with the Philips, he got them becuase they are cheap, his burned out both at the same itme in less then 2 months. I kept my OEM bulbs int eh back of the CRV for just this case, but never needed them.

I leave my lights on all the time and had one burn out just short of three months. I liked the look of the bulb but with this kind of life expectancy I'm going back to the stock bulb for now.

I don't have the SilverStars in my 04' Pilot and I did not vote in this poll, BUT, I am very interested in the results. I did replace my OEM bulbs with Sylvania XtraVisions, hoping to get longer life and almost the same liteing as the SilverStars.
I feel that the bulbs in the 04' does a pretty good job of providing light and the replacement XtraVisions only provide a very slight improvement (maybe a slightly whiter light thats focus slightly more directly infront of the Pilot). I got them for only $8.99 on sale at AutoZone, but will probably replace them with the OEM bulbs when they burn out.

I do not have the SilverStars yet, but when I do switch I will buy the Osram SilverStars. Because, while Sylvania is owned by Osram the Sylvania SilverStar and Osram SilverStar bulbs have more differences than just the blue tint on the Sylvania bulbs. I read somewhere that Sylvania overdrives the filaments to get the same light output as the Osrams...because of the amount of light blocked by the blue coating. The result is that the Sylvanias have a shorter life.

Here are two good sources for Osram Silverstars.

I installed my SilverStars some time in late 2002 (whenever I created that "SilverStar results" thread that's still floating around here somewhere). One of them died in December of 2003 and the other is still working just fine. I start work early in the morning, so I always have my lights on for my 25 minute drive to work. Other than that I don't have what I would consider any more of a disproportionate night driving schedule than anybody else. Even if they last only 1 year on average it's worth the difference to me. It only takes 20 seconds to swap. In fact, the one I purchased in december I swapped at night in the parking lot of the Advance Autoparts I bought it from. It takes more effort to get the gas cap to stay on the holder when refueling than it does to swap one of these lights! :2:

Im assuming that the silverstars are just like other halogen bulbs.

When installing them, be very carefull and DONT TOUCH THE BULB when putting them in. The oil and/or dirt from your hands will create hot spots on the bulb which will cause them to burn out a lot sooner than would otherwise be normal.

Just a thought

Yeah, it's a very good point to keep in mind when installing. It's right on the instruction sheet as well in the bulb package.

I had PIAA Extreme Whites installed on my 99 CRV when I had it... For the 2 years the PIAA ran perfect... When I traded the CRV in for the Pilot, I transferred the PIAA's into the Pilot... The passenger side burnt out after 5 months on the Pilot... So all in all the PIAA's lasted 2 years and 5 months (pretty good)... Now, with all of this low-lasting info regarding the Sylvania Silverstars, I'm wondering if there's something in the Pilot's electical that killed my PIAA's... Probably not, perhaps it really was dead...

Anyways, I was looking into getting the Sylvaina Silverstars, but after alot of feedback here and at HondaSUV.com, I decided to stay away from them... But I did buy from eBay, Sylvania's parent companies brand... The Osram Silverstars... Hopefully, these will have more success than the Sylvania brand...

Mine just burnt out at 6 months. Thought I would revive this poll.
