Group Buy for Cloud Rider Grilles in the works - Click HERE for Original Thread
redn22
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give you a heads up on a potential "group buy" that might happen in the forums of HondaSUV.com... So far we have 3 people (including myself) who is in for this... If we can get a large number of people, maybe we can get this thing for really cheap!

Please view this thread and let Patrick (HondaSUV's "Pilot Forum" moderator) know via this thread of your interests or not...

http://www.hondasuv.com/main2/viewt...der=asc&start=0

Thanks!

I installed a Cloud-rider stainless steel Grille insert a couple of months ago. There are a couple of different designs that the company offer. I got the spectare mesh design and it looks good on a silver Pilot.
john802
Here is the classic design by Cloud-Rider.

john802, thanks for the pics. Really appreciate them and I agree, the stainless mesh would look good on a SS Pilot. How was installation for these babies? Any special tools needed? How long did it take? Required getting under the car for the bottom piece to be installed? Thanks for your time and courtesy.

redn22, any idea as to how much the S&H costs will be since we're up in Canada? As well, what about the duties that may be levied on these things when they're coming across the border or if the shipper uses some kinda customs brokerage houses, then what about the fees for that?

I'm very excited about this group buy, but from my personal experience, often when ordering from the States, the cost of S&H plus the levied customs duties will often make the product considerably more expensive than the original price of what it normally goes for in the US. Thanks.

RipRock - It only takes me <5 minutes to install/remove the Grilles. You don't need any tools to install it. It comes with 9 aluminum bracket and speed screw. It mounts to the existing Grilles. I hope this helps.....

Thanks John802 for the price list and posting the great pictures. Now I am thinking that would look cool. Any idea if these designs restrict cooling in the summer to any significant degree?
Thanks,

That's good to hear. I'm just all thumbs when it comes to things like this. I think I'll go with the mesh design, like yours. The vertical and the oval designs are a bit too flashy for me.

Been thinking for a while about something like this for my Pilot. With all the gravel dumped on the roads during the winters here, I've always been concerned about the big gap in the lower bumper area. There are many small pebbles stuck between the fins right now on my radiator. Even thought about using chicken fence wiring to make something out of it, but I think this will look better :D

Here's a close-up pic of my Cloud-Rider Spectare mesh (small holes) with bright mirror finish.

I'm also interested in the group buy. I would like to get another one with the same finish but with the larger holes. I'll be using the ones with the larger holes in the hot summer months.

desertpilot, thanks for the close-ups. The holes aren't as small as I first thought they were. But seeing as how you want to use the bigger holes grille, have you noticed an increase in temperature at all with your current grille on?

I'm glad you like the pic because it's shown in real actual sunlight and not studio lights. No changes in temp, and I even had her up to triple digits speed (don't do this at home kids :14: ). I'm sure a big company like Cloud-Rider tested it before going to market. I just like the larger holes because the temp here goes up to 110+ degrees F in the summer time, it's just my own personal choice.

I have another regular front view pic at the Gallery of Installed Pilot Accessories in the link below.

I hope we get the group buy going.:D

First of all, thanks to redn22 for posting this thread on behalf of me. Secondly, I apologize that I just saw this thread today.:3: I rarely check this forum when I come to this site.

Anyway, we have 3 people so far who want the big hole with bright mirror finish. We need a minimum of 5 people to get $98.95 shipped anywhere within U.S. Regular price is $114.95. Small hole (Spectare) with bright mirror finish (like desertpilot's) is also availbalbe and we can combine the order, but not black powder finish.

It will cost more for S+H for Canadians, so I'd suggest Canadian member buy directly from Cloud-Rider.

Here's who we have so far.

1. PatrickC1026, big hole with bright mirror finish
2. desertpilot, big hole with bright mirror finish
3. CochonChien, big hole with bright mirror finish
Sage_EX
Why not the Black Powder coat? Couldn't a person just pay the $5 more and get it?

Actually the black costs $12 more. Besides, Cloud-Rider recently had a production problem with black powder coating and the production was delayed, so it's harder to get the black ones too. That's why I just thought we would do a group buy for just bright mirror finish.

Sorry for the super-delayed reply... Well, someone beat me to the answer to your questions, but just want to mention something...

TO ALL CANADIANS - I highly suggest that you purchase this direct from Cloud-Rider because if you order from the US, you may be charged the "dreadful" duty and the "even more" dreadful Brokerage Fees... I know on the posted price list it shows a flat shipping rate, but when I got in contact with someone from Cloud-Rider (via email), I got a different price... Shipping to Winnipeg from Regina will only cost me about $7.00 CND instead of the flat $25...

TO ALL AMERICANS - I highly suggest that you get your grille via Patrick (HondaSUV.com)... $100 USD is a very good price especially since the shipping is included... Patrcik just needs 2 more to fulfill the group-buy clause...

Well,

The price list I looked at on their website was $5 more.

I'll just get a bright one and paint it. Maybe I'll bead blast it and see how that looks?

EDIT to say I want the smallest mesh hole I can get (is that the Spectare?)

Put me down for one, how do I sign up?

Sage_EX - The Spectare Mesh Grille has the smallest hole in their product line. I noticed that you are from Florida and if I recall correctly, you don't have a front license plate. If I were you, you should order a Spectare Mesh Grille Combo without license plate provision.

For those Piloteers who has a OEM Engine Block Heater installed, you should order a Grille with Engine Block Heater provision.

No problem Sunday Rider... BTW, I did inquire about a Group Buy but they totally ignored that question... But you know what... for about $100 CND, that ain't so bad... Considering the cost of many accessories out there...

Make mine without liscense plate bracket provision, I also won't be needing the block heater here in FL.

Guess I need a follow email to Patrick.

Hmmmmm I will need to find out about the license plate. We need one more person though. Once we get the 5th person, I'll let you know how to sign-up and make payment.
mixxmstrmike
Just a few questions though...

1. The price that's being quoted of $100 shipped includes three pieces correct? Two uppers (on the hood) and one lower (on the bumper)?

2. Being in California, they do make one with a front license plate provision, correct? Meaning I will be able to install my front plates?

If the answers are Yes to both questions, then you can sign me up for a small hole, Spectre, mirror finish.

Thank you,
Mike

The answer to both of your question is 'yes'. You have to contact PatrickC1026 for the info.

You can count me in. I want the regular stainless finish with the standard vertical slots. I must be able to attach my plates, since it is illegal here to not have one on the front. Please verify I can attach the license plate without having to modify the grill.

#24-901LP Screen & Bumper Combo (license plate/no hole)

Thanks,

Looking at the website, it appears they make both types grills, with or w/o license plate provisions.

If that's the case, looks like we got 6!!!!!

Yippee!

As per Patrick's post:

"Anyway, we have 3 people so far who want the big hole with bright mirror finish. We need a minimum of 5 people to get $98.95 shipped anywhere within U.S. Regular price is $114.95. "

That's in US Funds... Shipped...
PatrickC1026
Actually is the group-buy is already up! Bing just changed the price to $98.95 (SHIPPED to lower 48 states), so whoever orders now will get the discount. Please go to this link to purchase.

Remember, this price is ONLY for bright mirror finish. There are 3 types available.

Classic: Vertical
Round Hole: Big hole
Spectare Mesh: Small hole

Use the comment area for license plate provision, block heater hole, etc. I will email individual persons separately.

On the link it indicates the powder coated version is an additional $15 so it appears to be available but I didn't try ordering it.

The site admin just made it easier for us (and him) and didn't change the availability, but I was told that there will be a delay if you order black powder finish.
Sage_EX
I just ordered mine!

Spectare, no license plate or block heater provision. I'll check it out when I get it and decided whether to paint it, I think blacked-out will look better but we shall see.

From the sample pictures, I'd personally prefer the bright mirror finish. It stands out better. You should just install it as is and see how it looks for a couple of weeks, then decide if you want to paint it.
PatrickC1026
It seems that all (or most) have placed the order. The price of the grilles will be changed back up by midnight tonight. If you have not placed the order, please do so ASAP.

For those of you who ordered the grilles, some grilles were shipped last Friday, so some of us should receive the grilles this week. Please post the pictures after you install.

I just got my Cloud Rider grilles and took a couple of pictures with a metric ruler for reference. Several members have expressed their concern about proper air ventilation with these grilles installed.

I hope the following pictures answer a few questions that people may have.

Will post before and after pictures when they're installed.

Finally had some time to install the Cloud Rider grilles! Here's the before picture:
mixxmstrmike
Somewhat easy to install, but does involve removing a few plastic retaining clips.
john802
mixxmstrmike - Nice pictures of your Pilot with Cloud-Rider Spectare Stainless Steel Grille.
What do you mean about removing a few plastic clips? Mine came with aluminum speed screw and mounting bracket.

-john
mixxmstrmike
What I meant by removing a few plastic retaining clips is that you will need to remove them in order to install the grille pieces. There's a plastic cover that's on top of the hood latch that is highly advisable to remove. You should remove this so that you will be able to get access behind the "top" grille (honeycomb/mesh portion on the Pilot).

In the Cloud Rider kit, there should be some nylon lock nuts (8 or 10mm). Their instructions say to put these on but are not designed to fully go into the bolt. They are used so that one cannot unscrew the lock screw and walk away with the grilles. It's these lock nuts that are going to be a chore to install if anything.

Installing the lower portion of the grille is going to involve removing 2 plastic retaining clips AND 2 10mm bolts from the lowest portion of the bumper. Once you remove the retaining clips and bolts, you'll be able to move the bumper such that you can put your hand behind it. You need to be somewhat of a contortionist to put the lower grille guard, but you'll understand what I mean. You either do this or remove the front bumper to install them.

Send me email an if you have any other questions. Good luck!

I did not removed anything before installing the Cloud-Rider Grille. I assembled the speed bolts, bracket and lock nuts to the Cloud-Rider Grille before installing it to the Pilot. It is so easy to install/remove the grille(3 minutes tops). I usually remove the grille every week when I wash the Pilot.

-john
john802
mixxmstrmike - I don't understand why you need to access behind the OEM grille to install the Cloud-Rider Grille? You are making it harder for yourself by doing that. Just assemble the speed bolt, clips and locking nuts to the Cloud-Rider Grille and install it to the Pilot (no tools needed).

Thanks John, the cloud riders are back on my wish list.

Even after I assembled the speed bolt, clip and locking nut, I was not able fish the bolt with attached clip through the OEM grille. The bottom portion was even worse, the retaining clips did not want to stay aligned with the bumper portion... they kept moving down so I needed to move the retaining clip and keep it aligned with the bumper with moving the speed bolt. The retaining clips were threaded such that there's a lot of play while they're on the bolt. Very hard to explain, but that's the best I can put it.

After assembling the speed bolts, retaining clips, and locking nuts to the Cloud-Rider Grille without using any tools, unscrew the speed bolt while holding the retaining clip until the clips butt in with the locking nuts. Now, the clips are stationary unless you turn the speed bolt.

-john
john802
All the threaded clips must butt-in with the locking nuts before installing the Cloud-Rider to the OEM grille.

-john
mixxmstrmike
the better way to do it. I'll have to try that if I ever remove them for cleaning. Makes sense though by butting up the retaining clips to the lock nut, it keeps them stationary and you just pull them up to where they need to grab hold of the OEM grille.

Thanks!

That's the same way I installed mine, except I have screw protrusion past the back of the nut. I made my protrusion about 1 to 1 1/2 the diameter of the screw, that way the nut will not fall off easily. IIRC when I used to be a manufacturing engineer, the same protrusion was required for fastener installations of that type.

The other way of installing it with the nut all the way in is also a good idea if you have a high risk of being ripped-off. Maybe doing it on only one fastener per grille piece would be a little easier?
PatrickC1026
I second (actually third :D ) to John. I did exactly the same way and quite easy. You just have to make sure that the clip is hooked to the stock grille. Here are some pictures that I took.

That long...that's how long I waited for my black powder coated spectare mesh 3 pieces last year. I figure that they solve the long delay by now, I guess not!!! I'll order a 3 pieces spectare mesh w/ bright mirror finish for MDX tomorrow and hopefully I'll get it before the middle of October.
Samuel2003
Well, good news is that it took just about a month (instead of 6-8 weeks). Bad news is that they got the order wrong (got stainless, was supposed to have been black powder coated). :3:
john802
Samuel2003 - I hope you don't have to wait another month to get the correct order!
BTW, ask them if they can include a rubber gasket that goes around the grille just like the mirror finish stainless grille. It's standard on the mirror finish but not on the black powder coat finish. The customer service include one on the MDX black powder coat SS grille that I order. There is no extra charge for it.
Samuel2003
John,

I called Cloud-Rider and they told me NO. They said that the grommet only comes on the Stainless to protect against the sharp edges; they said that it wouldn't fit over the black powder coat (yeah right); and they said that it would shrink and fall off (and that wouldn't happen with the Stainless?).

I was going to say something but, at this point, I just want the screen I ordered to begin with...
john802
Don,

I just PM you about the rubber gasket.
john802
Samuel2003 - Did you received your order from Cloud-Rider? If you did, can you kindly post a picture of the front of your pilot. How hard was it to install the grille w/ your front bumper guard on the way?

-john
Samuel2003
John, I got the correct one the other day. Just put it on. Had to dremel a couple of openings for my PIAA driving light wiring... Only bought the bottom one because I have brush guard braces going through the upper most grille opening. If I had to do it all over, I would now consider buying the whole kit and just dremeling a couple of areas in the top Cloud Rider grille too...
Samuel2003
here's one of the holes I had to make

btw, fortunately, the brush guard wasn't a problem, it was really easy to angle/guide the Cloud Rider grille into place and tighten the screws...
john802
Thanks for posting the picture of the front of your Pilot! I'm thinking of getting the front brush guard just like yours w/ PIAA 540 driving lights & I'm wondering how I will run the PIAA wires to the engine bay w/ my Cloud-Rider on the way...
Samuel2003
If you want to come by next weekend, we can take a look at how I did mine and maybe figure out a better way for you! Or maybe we could meet up with Wilson cause I have a few things that I've been meaning to get from him for awhile now...
john802
I've been planning to meet w/ wilson to get some 3M accessories from him. Why don't we get together w/ him( mini meet) anytime after thanksgiving if that's ok w/ you and wilson.

Why not make it a mini SoCal meet? :2:

Just an update for anyone just now looking at this thread....

The prices have increase about $70 from the prices listed here....

Old price shipped was $129 now it is around $200.

A little expensive......
