Other than for honda-pilot.org resident member jay, is anyone else a NASCAR fan???

I am still missing a few (they are on order from verious vendors) but here's my 1/64th scale collection of most of the car numbers and major sponsors:

Go #6. I've been a Mark Martin fan for a long time. Saw my first race over 30 years ago when Texas World Speedway first opened. Been hooked ever since.

The #6 car in my photo is not the Viagra car -- I have that one (the 2004 Viagra car) on order and the vendor says 10-12 weeks (several of the cars in the photo are still sporting last year's paint shemes -- sorry about that).

EDITED: The #6 car in the photo is now the Viagra car!!!

Kemo, I will think of you when I am at the Pepsi 400 July 4th weekend.

Me and my five year old son have a few Mattel Hot Wheels NASCAR race cars, but not a complete collection. Most of our NASCARs are still in sealed boxes and we have some models up to 1998 or so. We hav'nt bought any NASCAR cars this current year yet.

My son also collected last year's Hot Wheels Highway 35 World Race 35 car set. I sent Mattel all the UPC proof of purchase last December and they sent us their Ultimate World Race track (about 8 feet long and worth around $150) last week for free. They'll probably sell that big track in the stores this summer. If anyone would like to see a pic of it, I'll post it here for you.

There's a big NASCAR race here in Las Vegas Motor Speedway this coming weekend sponsored by Daimler Chrysler. I went to check out the track last weekend and they are very busy getting ready for the big race. My son's favorite driver is Kyle Petty because he used to drive the Hot Wheels car a few years ago. I'm rooting for Dale Jr. for this year, last year my favorite was Jeff Gordon but he and his team did'nt do so well.

We're very excited about the race this weekend! :roadtrip: :roadtrip: :roadtrip:
jay
I'm a 24 fan, largely a result of sibling rivalry. My brother's an 88 fan. So far we have tickets to the Richmond race May 15th and the June race in Dover. Still have to line up those September Richmond tickets. I'm also looking to get Hospitality passes for the May Richmond event, so we can lurk in the pits a while before the race.:D Great tailgate party time!:p

I think the Toyota truck commercials with Darrell Waltrip are pretty cool. Who knows where my allegiance will fall when Toyota gets into the Nextel Cup races.
Titans Fan
NASCAR and football are by far my favorite sports (and I'm not even related to Joe Gibbs). As an aside: It was at Darrell Waltrip Honda that I first drove a Pilot (but their price wasn't right). Right there in the middle of the showroom is the car he won his Daytona 500 in :29:

kemosabe, great pic! Several years ago, I was current on nearly every Matchbox NASCAR car I could get; but I haven't kept up lately. I'll take a pic of my collection and post it later.

I'm not a big Nascar fan but I've gone to the Lowes California 500 the past two years. I really enjoy going there to watch the races.
I only really like one driver, Jimmie Johnson from my current home town.
Titans Fan
Not too long ago, this was a pretty current collection. By my count, there are now only 3 car/driver/sponsor combinations that remain the same (Jeff Gordon & both Labontes). And most of the cars in the picture are Luminas and Thunderbirds (and 1 Oldsmobile!). Times change.
charlie
Kemosabe,Titans Fan,nice collections.Gee I am surprised Jeff Gordon can afford to have his car repainted so often. The Dupont car always has the best paint job.
What's up with the 'MALE ENHANCEMENT" car??The commercials are pretty funny, but I suspect they are going to run afoul of the FDA.
Well,just rambling,Charlie
krygny
I don't think he's racing anymore, but I used to be a fan of Dick Trickle. Only because his name sounds like a venerial disease.

"WEEEE-DOGGY, would ya' look at that Diii-ck Triii-ckle!"

(Yes, I'm making fun of the way southerners speak. I make fun of Noo Yawkuhs too, so don't :9: me.)

Very nice "vintage" collection you've got there, Titans Fan!!! :29:

Times change, sponsors change... :1:

Here's my collection. Thought charlie would appreciate it. Mine satisfy that chocolate craving, too. :D All of them were tucked in the mug that a friend gave me for Christmas.:p The Richmond May 15th night race is already sold out. Look for my brother and me at the top of Henrico Tower in the middle of the backstretch. He'll be wearing an 88 cap and a red Racing Electronics headset, and I'll have a 24 cap and red headset. Just yesterday I ordered Green Flag Hospitality passes. Buffet, beverage, and pit passes before the race. Yes!:D

kemosabe and Titans Fan have inspired me to start my own collection of diecasts.:p
charlie
Jay,very nice.I think it would be some sort of cannibalism to eat Jeff's car. What brand of Chocolate is it?I am a big time chocolate eater, but luckily my taste in chocolate isn't for the pricy stuff.Hershey with almond(or without) after maybe 15 minutes in the freezer is perfect.Every night I drink a huge glass-20 ounces-of Nestles Quick with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla icecream-fat free milk,ha,ha and I add equal to make it even sweeter!!Charlie

Charlie, that's priceless!:D I don't know what brand of chocolate it is, as I can't bear to cannibalize one! It does look like one or two have flat-spotted the tires, though. Damn Goodyears, to quote Tony Stewart. :p

They usually have a good variety of diecasts in the souvenir trailers at whatever track NASCAR is visiting. If you know anyone who is going to the race, maybe you could make a deal with them to pick one up for you.

Of course the problem with Sterling's car is that you can't buy a "toy" car with Coors on it; you can only buy a "collectors" car.

I plan to pick up a few at Richmond May 15. I ordered several today from nascar.com. Why is everyone's 1:64 scale diecast $8.99 except Mark Martin's 6 Viagra car? It was only $4.99:confused:

I have to wait a while for the 88 car (my brother's favorite), and a long time for the 24 Pepsi car, but the 24, 48 (Gordon's the owner of that car:p) and the 18 (my Mom's favorite, a Gibbs Racing car) will be here in a few days.

Anybody have any strong opinions either way about the field fillers every Sunday? Looks like there's probably 30-something full time teams and the rest are, perhaps, not quite "up to speed" with the pack.

This is being discussed around NASCAR water coolers, especially after jay's favorite #24 plowed into Andy Hillenberg at Darlington...

Well, of course I have a strong opinion. As John McLaughlin says at the end of his local political talk show, so should NASCAR say to field fillers: BYE BYE.

Should they have exactly 43 cars or not? Should the sanctioning body eliminate a hard max/min and just let whoever qualifies run on Sunday, whether it be 30 cars or 40 cars???

NASCAR might also characterize the field fillers à la McLaughlin's WRONG !!! (which he loves to utter as he solicits opinions from the panel members 'round the table).

Excellent question. As a fan, I'm not axle-wrapped (he he) around having 43 cars. Does the Kentucky Derby always have the same size field? Nope. But this discussion is ancillary to the root question- what can be done to lower the cost of competing. To be truly competitive, a team spends about $16 Million a year- to run an 800 horsepower go-cart around a track. Surely that barrier to entry can be lowered.

Back to the original question, I think 43 is a hard maximum, and at tracks like Bristol and Martinsville, it's really too many on such small tracks. I think NASCAR should not solicit "field-fillers," but I'm at a loss as to whether a field's cutoff should be the first X cars in a 2 second qualifying range, or some other formula. Even moving to a single engine for the weekend, there are many more variables from qualifying to race trim, so a car that has a bad qualifying run could burn the track up in the race. So many things to consider.

I just know one thing for sure- if you need a reason to get away, have a tailgate party with great food and beverage with 100,000 of your closest friends, what better way than a Nextel Cup race. Besides, the Gold Cup (for the local horsey set) is a great tailgate venue, but too rich for even my blood.:p
Titans Fan
I have mixed feelings. I hate to see a "filler car" take out a competitive car (especially one I like ;) ) or even hold one up. But I can't blame them for showing up; If someone gave me the chance to earn 50 G's for taking two or three laps, I would. And someone (I think it was Benny Parsons) was speculating on his radio show that some of these field fillers might be taking the payday to fund their race teams in an effort to make them more competitive down the road.

Maybe NASCAR could tighten up the minimum speed rules or cut the prize money for the back of the field. :8:
Bloke
Maybe implement a "107%" rule like in Formula 1, of late, however, even Formula 1 has been bending this rule to allow all the competing team to filed their cars, since there are only 10 teams this year.

Carl Long had one car, and it was destroyed in the race he was in. Sure, he's probably getting more donations from NASCAR fans now than Bush (we can only hope) but his only car, a more than $50k proposition, is history.

To thread drift, what's up with the two cars being impounded at Bristol? And Larry Foyt, from a great racing family, with no backup car to turn to.

jay's driver, Jeff Gordon, had a little bad luck at Martinsville last Sunday when the track literally crumbled and damaged the #24 Dupont... :(

For all you diehard NASCAR fans out there, i thought you might be interested in some commercials that i had the pleasure to work on at the beginning of the year.

We composited footage from the 50's to 2004 so that the older drivers talk and race against the modern ones. Pretty cool stuff.

I could never quite grasp the concept of a car driver being the owner of a car that another driver is driving...

Mark Martin drives the #6 Viagra car but also owns the #17 DeWalt car driven by Matt Kenseth... :8:

Jeff Gordon drives the #24 DuPont car but also owns the #48 Lowe's car driven by Jimmie Johnson... :8:
Titans Fan
Or Dale Earnhardt driving the #3 Goodwrench car (owned by Richard Childress), riding in third place in the Daytona 500, while two cars he owns (Dale Jr. & Michael Waltrip) battle for first and second place.
kemosabe
Very true, Titans Fan... :4: :) :17:

Other things that I wonder about are:

1) How Larry Foyt in the #14 car can do so poorly when his heritage includes the famous A.J. Foyt as the owner... :8:

2) How Kyle Petty in the #45 car can do so mediocre when his heritage includes the famous King Richard as the owner... :8:
Titans Fan
Or how John Andretti can be so mediocre when his family includes Mario and Michael.

Trivia question: Who are the only two drivers in history to have won the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500. (Hint - one of those drivers also won an F1 championship)

Thanks, big fella... :29:
