I've seen a few posts where members talk about the NHL, but haven't seen a thread devoted to it. While I'm not a big fan, it is interesting to watch, in a sad sort of way, what's happening to my hometown team, the Washington Capitals. About the only thing I know about Hockey is that it's a fun game in person, I got to see the Capitals beat the Bruins in the Garden a long time ago, and Rod Langway's name was on a great bar/eatery in Lanham, Maryland.

What's the scoop? Are all the teams losing money? Will there be a lockout?

kemosabe
Personally, I think that there will be a lockout next season. Plus, I think some teams will cease to exist if/when hockey owners and the player's union agree to whatever they can agree to.

A prolonged lockout is what Big Ted "Let Me Punch You" Leonsis is betting on when he traded most/all of the Capital (star) players like Jaromir Jagr et al...

I've only been to one Caps game, and that was back before they imploded the old Capital Centre... I much prefer the NFL and NASCAR!!!

Me too. Between the NFL and NASCAR, I have a reason to drink beer every weekend of the year!:7: Except leap year weekends and Mothers Day. Gotta visit Mom, so that's ok, but what's this crap with no race on a leap year weekend? Notice how there is always a race on Father's Day?:p

Actually, I've been kind of following this story: "Colorado forward Steve Moore will miss the rest of the NHL season with a broken neck, the result of an on-ice attack by Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi."

Seems like kind of a light punishment, if you ask me... But like I said, I'm not a true hockey connoisseur, so........... :8:

Wonder why Bertuzzi isn't in jail, if you walked up to someone on the street and did that, you would. Oh...and......GO WINGS..:p

What goes around comes around. Apparently, Moore had done something a week or so before. The NHL allows far too much lameness (cheap shots, cheesy plays, etc) and rulebending/breaking in their games. That being said, this one was a real cowardly sucker punch/attack.

I enjoy the NHL, and follow the local team (Carolina Hurricanes) pretty closely.

The thing that get me the most about the NHL is the refs. I know it's easy for fans to complain about the refs, but I think there is a level of consistancy and commitment to accuracy by refs in the NFL and NBA that is absent in the NHL. In my opinion, it is a systematic problem (steming from the NHL offices) rather than a characteristic of the individual refs.
I really wonder some time if the fans of other pro sports would put up with what NHL fans put up with when it comes to the officials. :8:

Mark Cuban needs to buy an NHL team, and then let his ref-bashing statistics gurus loose on the league office:9:

re. Losing $
Like the other pro-teamsports, a few teams are making money (some making lots of money) and several teams are losing money (some losing lots of money). Personally, I think that contraction in Hockey, Baseball, and Basketball would be good for each league.

re. Lockout
I cringe to think it and cringe more to say it, but given the track record of owner/player relations, it looks like the 2004-05 season is is jeopardy, due to the greed of both sides. Too bad.

re. Playoffs coming up.
Tighten your seatbelts, the NHL playoffs are coming. April, May and June. Wow. Hockey is great to watch anytime, but during the playoffs, it is high energy, non-stop action. Check it out.

Go Leafs!

The Canucks were up in arms over an open-ice hit by Moore on Naslund a couple of weeks before.. Though a staunch Avalanche fan, I thought the hit was clean. No penalty was called at the time and the NHL reviewed the hit and didn't assess a fine or suspension.

Funny thing is, the Canuck and Av's played a game in Denver a week before the infamous Bertuzzi punch and nothing happened. The Canuck players must've decided to wait until they were at home to seek they're revenge.

Any Leafs fans here?

What do the fine fans in Toronto think about Ron Francis now that they have seen him in a few games wearing blue?

Not only do they have to skate around in those skin tight uny's, they are using figure skates.......whatup wit dat? :D

I also think that a lockout is imminent, I just cant see the owners & NHLPA members coming to an agrrement before next season.

Big BERT (BERTUZZI) is actually under investigation by the local PD for the attack on MOORE but I doubt he'll get more than a slap on the wrist.

I also agree that referee's are part of the problem, too many unwritten rules. The players & coaches try to guess which penalties will be called depending on how the game is progressing.......as someone else said, very inconsistent.

Ron Francis is a class act, too bad the Leafs arent........( not a Leafs Fan).

Not a NASCAR fan either but I'm a big fan of the ultimate motorsport....F1.

Back to hockey...the success of any team depends a lot on one person, the goaltender. Look at Giguirre & Brodeur from last years final, they were phenominal. I think Marty & the Devils will be back in the finals this year but Jiggy wont even play in the post season. I have a feeling that Kiprusof from Calgary will take Jiggys spot as the underdog who takes his team deep into the playoffs..maybe even the finals. It makes me sick thinking that when I'm a die hard Oiler's fan that hates anything to do with the Flames....aaaargh:3:

How about a hockey pool, nayone interested in heading this up?

I dont have the resource/knowledge to set it up, otherwise I'd volunteer.

First let me tell you I am a Vancouver Canuck fan (To many years to count)

The Hit on Markus Naslund did go undetected and the ref should have called a penalty on the play especially when Naslund did not have the puck. Naslund was out for over a month do to the hit and suffered a concussion
Now, the "Get even hit" on Moore was uncalled for and was a stupid and desperate move that Bertuzzi decided to do when the team was getting there buts kicked 9-2.

Bertuzzi deserved what he got and in my opinion should not play for the rest of the year, this has cost the Canucks big points and probably will cost them to advance in the playoffs...

Bottom line you just can't behave this way in any sport, fighting is one thing but hitting someone from behind and injuring them is another. I guess like any sport there are referees and in the NHL the refs are VERY inconsistent.

Don't know if any of you remember the hit that Marty Mcsorely did on Vancouver's Donald Brasher? He was hit with the stick from behind right on the head.. Marty was suspended for the year and never returned to the NHL even after his suspension was over.

Hockey on tonight.....HURRAY!!!!

Didnt really miss hockey last year due to lock out but now I cant wait for 'my NHL' to begin.

Even though the Edmonton Oilers bettered themselves by acquiring Pronger & Pecca, they failed to address two key areas in the opinion of many fans including me. First, they dont have a #1 goalie & second, no bonafide pure goal scorer. They will make the playoffs but in the end, not having the likes of Kiprusoff or Iginla in the line up will cost them.

How do you think your favorite team will fare this season?

I think the Carolina Hurricanes will be about the same as they were before the lockout. .....Bad..... They will play just well enough to keep a few a the die hard fans hopeful in the beginning, but by the end of the year we will be watching a bunch on no-names from the minors.

I hope it turns out better, but I'm not putting any $ on it.

I'm glad hockey is back (even here in the south).

Go Leafs Go,
But man Ottawa sure looks good. I hate that team.

I am mad at both sides (owners and players), but will get over it by tonight.

Lindross and O'Neil will be great if they are not injured.

I was a kid last time they won Lord Stanley's mug, and am affraid they will be just okay this year, I can't see them hoisting the cup.

At least there is Don Cherry and Ron MacLean to keep the game interesting. These are the Hockey Night in Canada commentators on the CBC national network (which by the way were on strike, maybe they will be on by Saturday).

Two teams:
1) Leafs - closest to the heart
- had better win it this year before they get too old
2) Hawks - closest team to our home and original six
- improved in goal and have a good coach

Problems:
1) Can only get NHL hockey on the Outdoor Life Network. Where the heck is that channel?
2) Leafs aren't coming to Chicago this year. Bettman needs to fix that.

Drop the puck.

you cannot get Hawks home games on TV in the Chi-town area....

TV is such a new invention...they dont want to put it on such new-fangled ideas...

thats what happens when a dinorour runs the team :3:

I think they should put Betman in goal and if he can stop a slap shot from centre ice, then he can keep his so called job.
There would be record numbers watching that night.

Very true ramirami.

Don't know if it's greed, ignorance or cluelessness why Wirtz (owner of the Hawks) doesn't allow the broadcast of home games.
Sad really.

It's hard to follow a team that you don't get to see on TV that often.

Wow what a game to start the season. Overtime and a shoot out! Too bad Ottawa won, but the boys in blue kept up, and thought they would pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Very exciting game indeed. Glad to see it back.
borg
If the playoffs started today, the Oilers are in & the Flames are OUT!:2:

Oilers win 2nd game in SO, a very fast paced 1st period but the last two were dogged by penalties which killed the flow of the game. I did like the shoot out though.:18:

Results after October.

Canes are leading the East with 8-2-1 record while Leafs are 7th with 6-4-2.

In the West, Wings are leading the pack with 11-1-0, Oilers are 10th with 5-6-1 & the Hawks are 14th with 5-8-0 record.

Canes are the surprise co leaders of the East with the top 8 teams only separated by 4 pts. The Wings in the meantime are leading as usual while Oilers & Hawks are struggling in the bottom of the standings. I hope the Oilers have turned the corner & will keep their winning streak alive to 3 in a row against B Jackets tonight. It wasnt much fun watching them lose 7 in a row after a promising 3 in row to open the season.

I am in hiding after the Leafs got schooled by Ottawa 8-0. I couldn't watch after the 1st period. Oh well, back to drywalling the basement. That is more fun than watching the Leafs (will see how long that lasts).
Glad the Oilers are doing well.
Do you have the same dislike for the Flames as I do for the Senators?
borg
It looks like the Leafs, with the return of SUNDIN, will be turning things around. While the SEN's seem to keep finding ways to exploit opposing teams & continue their winning ways.

As much as I'd like to see the Oilers do well, I believe that out of all the Canadian based teams, the SEN's has the best chance of making it all the way to the finals, save injury to Mr. HASEK.

As far as the Flames, I dont dislike 'em as much as I used to, they're close second behind Vancouver.:D
fireflock
I predicted at the start of the season that the 'Canes would be horrible.

They have been fun to watch and Eric Staal has been amazing. He would be getting an unbelievable amount of press if he was in a bigger hockey market.

The biggest thing the Canes coaching staff and management did was prepare the team for the new NHL rules. Even in the pre-season it was clear that they were going to skate fast, use the 2 line pass, and really work hard on the power play.

Cam Ward (Canes goalie) has been a great rookie too.

It will be interesting to see if the Canes can keep it up (and if officiating reverts back to the old ways as the season goes on).
borg
SOOOOOOOO....the OILERS got a #1 goalie at the trade deadline......well, they've lost 3 games in row since and instead of being in 8th spot, they dropped to 9th and are looking behind the standings for the both the Wild's and Sharks. If there is a consolation, the Oiler's also traded for Samsonov from Boston, even if he doesn't get the chance to show his skills this year maybe he'll be around next season to help the Oilers get out of the gate faster and avoid another late season struggle to stay in the playoffs.

I was really hoping that they could've made a deal for a bona fide #1 goalie like Loungo.......it's a pipe dream I know.......maybe Roloson can still turn it around and just win enough games to get into the playoffs.:8:
borg
The Oilers are in.........now waiting on Carolina or Buffalo.

Roloson has turned out to be a decent goalie and even stole a couple of games for the team. Hopefully the Oilers give him some support by getting more on the offence. I just dont like their chances when they play at their end of the ice all the time.

Pronger has been a machine, IMO he is the key addition that has allowed the Oilers to advance, hopefully he can keep it up for four more wins. Samsonov hasnt done much but he hasnt hurt the team either, Peca on the other hand has been earning his money, he has been on fire and he is on the checking line.....outstanding work!

The games have been fun, the Oilers making the finals is great. But the city of Edmonton is bracing itself for a war. There are a few idiots out there that believe a sporting event celebration is a perfect opportunity to get into a drunken stooper and commit crimes against persons and properties.

Wow this has been a great close series (except game 2) great back and forth action, no dirty playing (not too much anyway).
I couldn't believe Edmonton lost the 1st game after that lead. I went to pick up my son when they were ahead, and couldn't believe it was tied by the time I came back. WHoaa.

I am going to get a heart attack watching this great action.
They are 2 great teams indeed.

Wish now I had gotten more into hockey. all I know about it basically is that they fight a lot and occasionally somebody hits the hockey puck during the fight. Know there is more than that to it but that has been the perception for a long time.

Here in the Raleigh/NC area, people are actually talking watching hockey instead of basketball!! (This area has Duke, UNC, NCSU, Wake Forrest all in the same general area. Basketball is #1 here; yawn - excuse me.)

How complicated is it to learn to watch hockey? Lots of people in the area starting to wake up to this sport.

I grew up playing soccer. Then at the age of 10 I fell in love with hockey. We played it in the winter, and in the summer, road hockey. I played most major sports, but for some reason hockey just became the best one for me. I even watched the series when Toronto last won the Cup (that's how old I am).
I find the regular season long and somtimes tedious, so I wait for the playoffs, the real season. I never care who is playing and always watch.

The rules are weird if you are a baseball, soccer, basketball, or football fan. But after a few games you will get the hang of it. Better if you watch with someone who knows the rules and explains them to you. My brother in law lives in Mississippi, and he knows the rules now after a few visits up here. He loves the game now, and I almost lost a bet to him in the 2002 Olympics (I don't want to talk about '06!), but Canada came up big.
You should follow it, you guys have a great team. I love to watch Carolina, they have such grit.
andysly5
Hey Sporty, glad to hear you're getting into hockey and your Canes. It really is the greatest sport in the world. I've been watching hockey since '81 when i was just 10 years old. Now that I have my own son, I cannot wait to introduce him to the ice game. I'll wait until he's at least 6 months old before shoving a hockey stick in his hands! LOL

As for the rules, watch the games and pay attention to the commentators. If they're good (like they are for my hometown NY Rangers) you'll learn alot.

As for the "they fight a lot and occasionally somebody hits the hockey puck during the fight" perception, forget it. That's not today's hockey. This game is more like NFL football played at 100 mph! You'll get hard body checks into the boards, open ice hits, and gorgeous passing plays that find the back of the net. Not to mention acrobatic saves that will leave you shaking your head.

And where else will you find players so tough that they regularly take stitches or lose teeth during the game only to return to action a few minutes later (not MONTHS later like other sports!)? These are the toughest athletes I've ever seen.

One last thing about hockey that draws me in. For the most part, these are the most accessible, friendly athletes around. They really seem to embrace the fans, instead of treat the fan as a second class citizen (again like other sports tend to do).
BCinTX
I was back in Raleigh for a couple weeks and got to see game 7 of the Sabres series, and game 1 of the finals. Great games. In my opinion there is no better sport than playoff hockey to watch live. I've been to a Super Bowl and college football championship game, but the constant intensity of a game 7 was like nothing I'd seen. (It didn't help that both football games were blowouts.) Regular season hockey is good too, but in the playoffs you see guys diving in front of slap shots and stuff like that. Very few fights too.
Sunday Rider
Hey Sportymonk, you might see history in the making tonight. I hope not, since I am rooting for Edmonton, but it may happen. Hope you get a chance to watch.

One rule to remember, it is offside when the opposing team member crosses the blue line before the puck does. In this series there are so many close calls on this.

That is because they did not advertise it well. I saw ads for the first two games on OLN everywhere, I watched those. I wanted to know when the next game was, but didn't see ads, yes I know nhl.com, but the point is that you have to advertise it to get viewers.
